The Seabob F5 S is almost a cross between owning a PWC and a body board, yet is capable of diving underwater up to 40m in the hands of a skilled rider. Boatadvice tested the F5 S on a beautiful summers day at Shelley Beach, Manly and were immediately captured by the fun of gliding over and through the water effortlessly. All you have to do is hold on tight and cruise over waves on the surface, or shift the unit and your weight downward and dive to the depth and hug the ocean floor as long as your breath allows.
The Seabob F5 S is a hydro-dynamically designed plastic unit packing a powerful jet engine generating 680Nm of power. It powers along the surface at up to 20km/h and 15km/h below. Being a jet engine, it is completely safe for all ages and has no external moving parts that may cause damage to the user. It is also powered by rechargeable lithium ion accumulators and that places it in the eco-friendly territory, not requiring fuel.
To use the unit, boatadvice journalist Dominic Wiseman had a crash course in the controls and was out on the water in seconds. Wearing nothing but a pair of goggles, you can power towards the ocean floor by steering yourself and the machine using little more than body movement. By moving your legs, they act as a rudder guiding you along wherever you may choose.
A built in safety handle means that as soon as you let go of the unit, it will power down and come to a halt so you can retrieve it very easily. It operates in a similar way to a emergency kill switch on a personal water craft.
The SeaBob was designed in Stuttgart, Germany and is powered by a patented electric motor, drawing on rechargeable Li-Ion accumulators and driving an impeller jet propulsion system. To charge the unit you can opt for the standard charger, 6-12 hours or a fast charger, 90 minutes.
