Honestly, as a Russian, I am very skeptical of this and believe that this 'New cold war' topic is inflated. I mean, the world is too globalized and interdependent right now. In the real cold war time, there was virtually no trade and closed borders between two blocks and now more than half of China's trade is with the West and vice versa. Every political move discussed is in my view hypocritical, since everyone keeps trading with everyone regardless of these 'alliances'. And that Brics are developing a new currency is just laughable, they aren't even an alliance (SA's president was to arrest Putin if he comes)
Even in the original cold war there was some trade and relations between the blocks. Maybe not for the people, but for the governments and the powerful at least. The interdependency is keeping things from collapsing, but we see in the last years that the new blocks are trying to cut this dependency. But at the end of the day, global politics is just the result of thousands of small decision by people with conflicting interests, who will cooperate for some time if it helps them all.

There's a lot to be said for old school effects and other "old school" additives/techniques that went underappreciated and have slowly become lost in the modern media landscape. Slowly we're learning why they were so good and ubiquitous to begin with. Look at the cinema. It's the one place where many young people including myself and even some of the older generations might listen to a piece of really traditional classical music without even noticing it, because it just works!

To make a single currency or military alliance between such disparate far-flung countries would take a lot more unity and mutual co-operation than these states are capable of. The EU is geographically and culturally linked through their proximity to one another and even they haven't managed to spread the Euro to all members, or establish a formal alliance that isn't NATO. China and India are always skirmishing over their border, Russia's a global pariah, and South Africa is nearly a failed state that recently threatened to arrest Putin if he stopped by for the BRICS summit. NATO they ain't. And a mutual trade currency can't have garbage economies attached to it (South Africa, arguably Russia). Look what Greece did to the Eurozone.

An an American living in Mexico, I study world politics and war because I intend to live in the non-aligned countries as much as possible for the rest of my life.
As a person in a non-aligned country, I also want too but,at the same time more west leaning because compared to China or Russia it's a no brainer. So sorta neutral and a little west leaning.

Speaking as a Chinese who studied in the US, this saddens me greatly. There is nothing I can do because the movements on the current trajectories, were set in motion a long time ago. The only way to get out of this is time taking its course, there is no going back, globalization as I knew and grown up in, is doomed.
This saddens me as well, as I am a US student who will study in China this coming January. I think these types of exchange programs and experiences can help foster greater understanding and empathy between US and China, and I wish there were more.

As a Hungarian, I can also confirm that even within the EU, there are countries, which hesitant to choose sides. For example, our government is in the EU and taking funds from EU/NATO, but still buying cheap gas from Russia, and taking huge loans from China.

Honestly, as an American, This reality of a modern day “Cold War” is a bit frightening. Hi Johnny , just to clarify , Brazil didn't sell 40mm anti aircraft ammunition , 5,56 automatic rifles , small arms ammunition and armored vehicles to Ukraine because by Brazil's constitution they can't sell arms to countries that are in war , Brazil is a neutral country as per it's constitution .
Regarding to Brazil, the country will always pursue good diplomatic relations with all countries, not picking any side, unless certain country acts against Brazil specifically. This is what it has been since the country's independence, and politically tries to keep in this way. That's not only for "best deals" as mentioned.

Ideologically US and most of the non-aligned countries are very different. That's true, but there is a long game the US can look forward to. That is 'universal values', the values that will develop naturally as nations get more educated and wealthier. We are moving into a world more akin to the 18th and 19th centuries, when the idea of balance of power was taken more seriously. You can’t just expect one country to set the global rules anymore.
Do we have to constantly think about things with a "war" mindset? China is pursuing its own economic interests but doesn't want to actually have a conflict with the US - and has stated so multiple times. From what I've seen, this "new cold war" language mainly comes from the US side. Are countries allowed to pursue economic projects independent from the US, without this being classified as being a "war"? I think people are willing a war into existence where there needn't be one.

Great analysis. Just one thing to add. India isn't peaking sides not so that we can benefits from both China and US. Infact we are still military confrontation along the border area with China. So not planning to benefit from China at the very least. Now coming to our engagement with the US. India doesn't approach US so that we can get some aid like Pakistan. Infact we are the fastest growing economy this year. And due to our population size, we are to a large extent independent economically because our own consumer market can ensure economic growth. US India engagement is just because of the fact that we both have common rival and that will be China. So it pretty much serves mutual interest
Whilst I agree with your points on India not approaching the US for aid, it's far too simplistic atm to say that India is only engaging with the US for 'mutual interests'. There has been a slew of investment from American companies as of late, with billions of dollars to flow into the country. Whilst this is probably also to benefit the US, the 'de-risking' of US's dependence on China is leading to a great deal of advantages for India. The role of the Quad can't be understated as well. So yes, while India is looking after their own interests especially with China's looming presence, it's too simplistic to say that it's 'just because we have a common rival'. India and the US agree on many frontiers and it seems likely to grow in the near future.
I'm a Cuban living in Cuba. The tight ties our current government has with Russia in the middle of the Ukraine war and the secret bargains and contracts being signed without the Cuban people's concern resemble to those in the worst and most dangerous moments of the cold war. The missiles crisis comes to my mind every time military generals visit each other's country, we don't really know what they are talking about. In addition, the Army celebrates the birth of the North Korean army with top North Korean leaders. I don't support any of that, and yet, I know I could pay the price.

However when you overlayed images over the map of China, you more often only showed Xi, and his military. Might I suggest you also highlight the people and the society within China?

As a chilean, i'm glad to see the superpowers to fight each other on trade mainly. However, this changed after WW2, where the US guaranteed open trade by patrolling the global oceans as part of its grand strategy to contain the Soviet Union. After the cold war this has been a status quo largely out of lack of vision on what to do next and a domestic politics that is allergic to any coercive foreign policy that doesn't show clear benefits to global security. Leaving this here in case someone thinks the US policy hasn't changed since Teddy Roosevelt.
It is essential to express opposition to China's naval expansion, given its primary objective of controlling the Taiwan Strait (and the South China Sea). It has already been laid bare by the war in Ukraine war that Russia's military is not even close to superpower status. They have nukes but it is mutually assured destruction to use them and is nearly a moot point. We have been providing Ukraine our scrap and without putting a single boot on the ground, Russia is being defeated. They are using World War II era tanks and after a year and a half don't even have any substantial air superiority. Russia doesn't have a blue water navy and their airlift capability is lacking. We have the best blue water navy in the world and have the best airlift capability ever seen. We have bases all over the world which gives us a huge leg up. In no sense of the word is Russia a superpower, whether economically, militarily or technologically. What does Russia produce for the world that is of value? They have a lot of oil but what innovations do they create that help humanity? Russian women are lined up to marry American men so that they can come here and escape that backward, second rate country that is run by a tin pot dictator. All of the Chinese military which we hear so much about is stolen American technology that isn't being perfected like the way that we do it. China has an excellent area of denial capability, but we have a wartime reserve capability that hasn't been seen yet and hopefully won't be needed. Also, China doesn't have any recent combat experience which plays a huge role in military effectiveness. We have many decades worth of combat experience. We don't have a near peer adversary as we are meant to believe.
Hard to imagine the face of an american revolutionary soldier in the 1770s if you tell them that 300 years later they would eventually coming from 13 colonies, become rivals of China which was probably a country that they never heard or think of

It's simple....China plans to "win" by....not going to war. They're going to simply and undeniable achieve second strike capabilities...and grow their economy more and more and more. Either the US can instigate conflict in the region or they can't. If you check US military papers they believe they have a 5-10 year window to contain and deal great damage to China. If China isn't pushed to take military action, they're going to Sun Tzu it up and just become #1 without a fight. As a Chinese person, I've never seen a more "passively subjective" video on China Vs. USA. I mean, there are channels that present very obviously which side they partake, and then there is this video, pretending to be objective while it is clearly Chinese sided. As a South African, we are much more culturally aligned with the West, however, economically, we are much more aligned with China. I can see future cooperation being along the lines of, "we support you guys in the West, but we can't afford to not support China in this matter." Also, regarding BRICS, most of us don't know or don't care much about this association, and it has potential to cause more pain than benefit in the short term by isolating us from the West, but could have long term benefits if the world order does shift.
That's sort of like how it is in New Zealand. Our government does side with the West on things like Ukraine, but we're importing tons of stuff like medical equipment, fertilizer and textiles from China so "picking a side" would be difficult because of this arrangement. It always seems that our government has been, not taking two steps forward and one step back but instead "spreading their legs" as the two sides drift apart.

All wars are fought over resources. Long story short, if war is cheaper than trade then war becomes a likely outcome. Mankind will only work together if we find aliens to go to war against; especially if they find us first.
I think this conflict is going to be way more of an us vs them like it was in the Cold War. Russia and India will both play significant roles and both have very different ideologies than both the and China. Japan is also diverting from its past if it’s nature and many European countries have long since decolonized but are forming new relationships that include trade and diplomacy to their former colonies. It will be very interesting
I don’t think ideology is gonna matter much more in this new Cold War like it did in the previous one. If you notice, China and Russia have very different ideologies but similar interests (which will be the theme of the new Cold War). The US needs to stop forcing everyone to be democratic and start pursuing its national interests on a new level. If you want to be successful in this new Cold War, you need to focus on nationalism being the only theme in your country (so no globalism) and shared interests and objectives with your allies.
You should have mentioned one European country that also balances well between China and America, and that is Serbia. In Serbia, the Chinese are building a network of highways and high-speed railways.

Under the leadership of PM Modi, India is rapidly improving infra, and the world's largest start-up ecosystem, along with massive software companies like Infosys and TCS based in more than 50 countries. Many westerners have an impression of India as a poor and very cheap country, basically a bad impression, But under BJP (ruling party), we are soon going to pass Germany and Japan to be the third largest economy with a gdp of 10 trillion by 2030. I really want you to write this tremendous success story in a positive way to change India's image among the western world, and India is actually portrayed as the major leader and representative of the global south. @JohnnyHarris

Its a complicated order where one caveat is that bunch of countries not going along with the US does not equal them being together against the US. Its super easy for alliances on weak foundations to break and while countries like China and India may not necessarily like the US, it would be a shock if they get along with each other as well.
The issue with China is the heavy focus on nationalism. It's been difficult for them to make real allies because of that. For example, they refuse to concede on their South China Sea claim. And they are still in conflict with India over border disputes. Depending on how the Ukraine war goes, they may be less likely to be as nice to Russia

Very good video. It’s scary when the “big names” we throw at the problem are all seemingly incompetent though. We lose our place as global currency and we are in deep trouble. Our most recent regime changes seem to be for sport, which really could motivate other countries if you think about it.
Once you started imposing your ideology on others it was the beginning of the end. History has taught that since the beginning of time, once you force others into something, it’s a matter of time before you see the people you forced revolt against you. Even if people don’t like China, it’s the lesser evil and people will gladly switch sides.
No body wants to take on the global currency because no one wants to run budget deficits. If china were to run budget deficits, their manufacturing would be lost and hold no value. They don’t want to lose that. The dollar, for now, is safe.

Hey man, loved the presentation style and storytelling. Quite engaging. But there’s still a long way to go for it to be called a “journalistic piece” imho. For eg. the Chinese debt trap narrative has been debunked quite comprehensively by a lot of researchers and nations themselves. Or for eg. when you say india is buying half its oil and weapons from Russia, it comes across as if that is a result of the war. But in fact Russia - India relations go all the way back to India’s independence and the reason India trades with Russia is because the west had sanctioned India for the most part of history. There’s more like this. But I’d say these details matter more than the presentation style. You guys have already nailed that.

And also, it's not entirely false to say China will use the debt as leverage, but what is missing is that western countries have done that for decades. IMF have plenty of loans, US using the monetary system and financial system has control over most of the world (SWIFT banking, for example that they kicked Russia out of). These are all leverages

A rare Johhny article i vehemently disagree with. The BRICS currency is not realistic or close to coming to fruition (and many of the countries don't get alone), China's economic power is in decline as it's cost goes up and countries look internally after Covid, and their population is aging rapidly and will weaken both their economy and their military. Saying it's a new cold war is a glitzy headline, and China has gotten way stronger and more economically involved with it's neighbors the last 20 years, but saying they will truly compete with the United States in the near future is simply false and overlooking the reality of the situation

Regarding India, they’re leveraged by Russia due to previously purchasing military equipment that only Russia has replacement parts for. If India cuts off Russia, Russia stops sending India the parts needed to maintain things such as parts for their fighter jets. This puts India in the predicament that could be exploited by China and Pakistan who already have border conflicts with this country.
That's why India started building own weapons and some how signing MoUs with different countries for technology. Like US just gave jet engine technology for fighter jets. It gonna replace Mig 21 soon with indigenous fighter jet.
India Russia partnership is much much deeper than weapons. It's not about weapons alone. However, as far as future is concerned. India-Russia relationship is not in good shape. India needs USA and Russia needs China.

Honestly, as a Russian, I am very skeptical of this and believe that this 'New cold war' topic is inflated. I mean, the world is too globalized and interdependent right now. In the real cold war time, there was virtually no trade and closed borders between two blocks and now more than half of China's trade is with the West and vice versa. Every political move discussed is in my view hypocritical, since everyone keeps trading with everyone regardless of these 'alliances'. And that Brics are developing a new currency is just laughable, they aren't even an alliance (SA's president was to arrest Putin if he comes)
Even in the original cold war there was some trade and relations between the blocks. Maybe not for the people, but for the governments and the powerful at least. The interdependency is keeping things from collapsing, but we see in the last years that the new blocks are trying to cut this dependency. But at the end of the day, global politics is just the result of thousands of small decision by people with conflicting interests, who will cooperate for some time if it helps them all.

Also from ideological point of view, China or Russia don't provide any solid and self-sufficient ideology or vision of better future as Soviet Union did. Economic growth of these countries was nurtured and empowered by the West, and politically China and Russia are way too corrupt and unripe compared to Western Democracies. Thus, to call it a new bipolar world is exaggerated. Most countries still see democracy as their ideal and only lean towards the East in some specific matters.

There's a lot to be said for old school effects and other "old school" additives/techniques that went underappreciated and have slowly become lost in the modern media landscape.
Slowly we're learning why they were so good and ubiquitous to begin with. Look at the cinema. It's the one place where many young people including myself and even some of the older generations might listen to a piece of really traditional classical music without even noticing it, because it just works!
I completely HATE the sound effects & music. Amusing that I just wrote how much it drove me insane & that couldn't even stand to watch the rest of the video. I'm old & this was NOT how videos used to be. It's new & something Millennials or younger stuff into their videos. It's distracting, annoying & makes hearing the words harder (for old ears).

8:00 BRICS is not some rival to the West or NATO. To make a single currency or military alliance between such disparate far-flung countries would take a lot more unity and mutual co-operation than these states are capable of. The EU is geographically and culturally linked through their proximity to one another and even they haven't managed to spread the Euro to all members, or establish a formal alliance that isn't NATO. China and India are always skirmishing over their border, Russia's a global pariah, and South Africa is nearly a failed state that recently threatened to arrest Putin if he stopped by for the BRICS summit.
NATO they ain't. And a mutual trade currency can't have garbage economies attached to it (South Africa, arguably Russia). Look what Greece did to the Eurozone.

We’ve been in a new Cold War for several years at this point. Considering trade wars and militarization of the South China Sea, things could and likely will get significantly more serious. The Cold War with the USSR has a debated start date, and this one will too when we look back on it.

Speaking as a Chinese who studied in the US, this saddens me greatly. There is nothing I can do because the movements on the current trajectories, were set in motion a long time ago. The only way to get out of this is time taking its course, there is no going back, globalization as I knew and grown up in, is doomed.
This saddens me as well, as I am a US student who will study in China this coming January. I think these types of exchange programs and experiences can help foster greater understanding and empathy between US and China, and I wish there were more.

This is a conflict of authorities who are trying to get more power. Even if the US chooses a politician who will try more to negotiate with China, China itself will not give up the idea of expanding its influence.
The conflict can only be resolved if there is a third party that can contain both. Previously, there were such hopes for the EU, but its forces are not enough to influence it as a full-fledged single country

Yeah china hasn’t been aggressive compared to any other world power since they came into power really. The only things that come to mind of them sending troops to other places: Korean War, invasion of Tibet and the sino-Vietnamese war. One of which also had American troops, and they have also invaded Vietnam. And China haven’t invaded Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan

Honestly, as an American, This reality of a modern day “Cold War” is a bit frightening. I find it amazing that despite humanity going through the bloodiest war in history just 80 years ago that another war is transpiring on the global position for economic hegemony over the most countries. Exceptionally well done for many reasons. My only fear is that Harris might just be exceptionally good at convincing me of things: That I am accepting his conclusions without giving any real challenge to the premises that he used to lead me to them.

Hi Johnny , just to clarify , Brazil didn't sell 40mm anti aircraft ammunition , 5,56 automatic rifles , small arms ammunition and armored vehicles to Ukraine because by Brazil's constitution they can't sell arms to countries that are in war , Brazil is a neutral country as per it's constitution .
Regarding to Brazil, the country will always pursue good diplomatic relations with all countries, not picking any side, unless certain country acts against Brazil specifically. This is what it has been since the country's independence, and politically tries to keep in this way. That's not only for "best deals" as mentioned.
It is for best deals and there’s nothing wrong with that. There is no idealism in international relations, there are only national interests. And Brazil is allowed to have them just like the US, Europe and other developed countries.

Ideologically US and most of the non-aligned countries are very different. If US not only want them allied with them but also want them to follow all their ideologies, then China will definitely get the upper hand with transactional alliance based on benefits without any need to change their ideologies.

Do we have to constantly think about things with a "war" mindset? China is pursuing its own economic interests but doesn't want to actually have a conflict with the US - and has stated so multiple times. From what I've seen, this "new cold war" language mainly comes from the US side. Are countries allowed to pursue economic projects independent from the US, without this being classified as being a "war"? I think people are willing a war into existence where there needn't be one.

Now coming to our engagement with the US. India doesn't approach US so that we can get some aid like Pakistan. Infact we are the fastest growing economy this year. Whilst I agree with your points on India not approaching the US for aid, it's far too simplistic atm to say that India is only engaging with the US for 'mutual interests'. There has been a slew of investment from American companies as of late, with billions of dollars to flow into the country. Whilst this is probably also to benefit the US, the 'de-risking' of US's dependence on China is leading to a great deal of advantages for India. The role of the Quad can't be understated as well. So yes, while India is looking after their own interests especially with China's looming presence, it's too simplistic to say that it's 'just because we have a common rival'. India and the US agree on many frontiers and it seems likely to grow in the near future.

The tight ties our current government has with Russia in the middle of the Ukraine war and the secret bargains and contracts being signed without the Cuban people's concern resemble to those in the worst and most dangerous moments of the cold war. The missiles crisis comes to my mind every time military generals visit each other's country, we don't really know what they are talking about. In addition, the Army celebrates the birth of the North Korean army with top North Korean leaders. I don't support any of that, and yet, I know I could pay the price.

It has already been laid bare by the war in Ukraine war that Russia's military is not even close to superpower status. They have nukes but it is mutually assured destruction to use them and is nearly a moot point. We have been providing Ukraine our scrap and without putting a single boot on the ground, Russia is being defeated. They are using World War II era tanks and after a year and a half don't even have any substantial air superiority. Russia doesn't have a blue water navy and their airlift capability is lacking. We have the best blue water navy in the world and have the best airlift capability ever seen. We have bases all over the world which gives us a huge leg up. In no sense of the word is Russia a superpower, whether economically, militarily or technologically. What does Russia produce for the world that is of value? They have a lot of oil but what innovations do they create that help humanity? Russian women are lined up to marry American men so that they can come here and escape that backward, second rate country that is run by a tin pot dictator.
All of the Chinese military which we hear so much about is stolen American technology that isn't being perfected like the way that we do it. China has an excellent area of denial capability, but we have a wartime reserve capability that hasn't been seen yet and hopefully won't be needed. Also, China doesn't have any recent combat experience which plays a huge role in military effectiveness. We have many decades worth of combat experience. We don't have a near peer adversary as we are meant to believe.

As a South African, we are much more culturally aligned with the West, however, economically, we are much more aligned with China. I can see future cooperation being along the lines of, "we support you guys in the West, but we can't afford to not support China in this matter." Also, regarding BRICS, most of us don't know or don't care much about this association, and it has potential to cause more pain than benefit in the short term by isolating us from the West, but could have long term benefits if the world order does shift.

Cold war officially started at the winter olympics last year which occurred in China. Putin was invited as a special guest of honor and on the first day of the games, China and Russia issued a joint statement asking for multipolarity and offered worldwide nuclear peace treaty. US flipped them the bird, Russia invaded Ukraine less than 30 days later.

All wars are fought over resources. Long story short, if war is cheaper than trade then war becomes a likely outcome. Mankind will only work together if we find aliens to go to war against; especially if they find us first.
I think this conflict is going to be way more of an us vs them like it was in the Cold War. Russia and India will both play significant roles and both have very different ideologies than both the and China. Japan is also diverting from its past if it’s nature and many European countries have long since decolonized but are forming new relationships that include trade and diplomacy to their former colonies. It will be very interesting
I don’t think ideology is gonna matter much more in this new Cold War like it did in the previous one. If you notice, China and Russia have very different ideologies but similar interests (which will be the theme of the new Cold War). The US needs to stop forcing everyone to be democratic and start pursuing its national interests on a new level. If you want to be successful in this new Cold War, you need to focus on nationalism being the only theme in your country (so no globalism) and shared interests and objectives with your allies.

But whenever it comes to Geopolitics videos, we always see China and USA and Russia behind China. But there is not a single one of your 239 videos solely dedicated to the country of India, the world's fastest growing country in the world. Under the leadership of PM Modi, India is rapidly improving infra, and the world's largest start-up ecosystem, along with massive software companies like Infosys and TCS based in more than 50 countries. Many westerners have an impression of India as a poor and very cheap country, basically a bad impression, But under BJP (ruling party), we are soon going to pass Germany and Japan to be the third largest economy with a gdp of 10 trillion by 2030. I really want you to write this tremendous success story in a positive way to change India's image among the western world, and India is actually portrayed as the major leader and representative of the global south.

Its a complicated order where one caveat is that bunch of countries not going along with the US does not equal them being together against the US. Its super easy for alliances on weak foundations to break and while countries like China and India may not necessarily like the US, it would be a shock if they get along with each other as well.
The issue with China is the heavy focus on nationalism. It's been difficult for them to make real allies because of that. For example, they refuse to concede on their South China Sea claim. And they are still in conflict with India over border disputes. Depending on how the Ukraine war goes, they may be less likely to be as nice to Russia

No body wants to take on the global currency because no one wants to run budget deficits. If china were to run budget deficits, their manufacturing would be lost and hold no value. They don’t want to lose that. The dollar, for now, is safe.

Hey man, loved the presentation style and storytelling. Quite engaging. But there’s still a long way to go for it to be called a “journalistic piece” imho. For eg. the Chinese debt trap narrative has been debunked quite comprehensively by a lot of researchers and nations themselves. Or for eg. when you say india is buying half its oil and weapons from Russia, it comes across as if that is a result of the war. But in fact Russia - India relations go all the way back to India’s independence and the reason India trades with Russia is because the west had sanctioned India for the most part of history. There’s more like this. But I’d say these details matter more than the presentation style. You guys have already nailed that.
He didn't exactly use the word debt trap, to be fair. And also, it's not entirely false to say China will use the debt as leverage, but what is missing is that western countries have done that for decades. IMF have plenty of loans, US using the monetary system and financial system has control over most of the world (SWIFT banking, for example that they kicked Russia out of). These are all leverages

A rare Johhny article i vehemently disagree with. The BRICS currency is not realistic or close to coming to fruition (and many of the countries don't get alone), China's economic power is in decline as it's cost goes up and countries look internally after Covid, and their population is aging rapidly and will weaken both their economy and their military. Saying it's a new cold war is a glitzy headline, and China has gotten way stronger and more economically involved with it's neighbors the last 20 years, but saying they will truly compete with the United States in the near future is simply false and overlooking the reality of the situation

Regarding India, they’re leveraged by Russia due to previously purchasing military equipment that only Russia has replacement parts for. If India cuts off Russia, Russia stops sending India the parts needed to maintain things such as parts for their fighter jets. This puts India in the predicament that could be exploited by China and Pakistan who already have border conflicts with this country.
That's why India started building own weapons and some how signing MoUs with different countries for technology. Like US just gave jet engine technology for fighter jets. It gonna replace Mig 21 soon with indigenous fighter jet.
India Russia partnership is much much deeper than weapons. It's not about weapons alone. However, as far as future is concerned. India-Russia relationship is not in good shape. India needs USA and Russia needs China.
