@MrJamessproule We use stakes for reference and then I have a good eye for how deep I am by looking at the stake height (most stakes sit about 1.15m tall), bucket depth (bucket is around 2.30 if stood straight up and down), stick depth (3m to first bucket pin) etc. Once I get the first station or two on grade to see exactly where level (or the slope) is I can usually be within 10-15 centimeters with the 385. Lasers and GPS are fine but we still do it the old way of shooting with an eye level.
I watched some of your other videos man. Such a sick job, I'm actually moving to Calgary in a month and hopefully running one of these boys. Keep posting more, little more control work videos would be sweet.
I have a new camera mount as well, so hopefully I can get some better angles in the future. We ordered the 385 at the beginning of last year and received it late may, so I assume it's an '08 (it's a Powerstripe edition). I'll try to remember to check the tag. Liehberrs are a huge pain in the ass to get parts for here so they are very very rare.
We do alot of bulking out to grade work which gets interesting trying to figure out how to make everything neat, but get the trucks in there and keep them rolling.
@PaTrIcKat1995 That would be the instrument display/computer. That screen shows hours, fuel level, coolant temp and hydraulic temp. Then there is a flip open panel under the screen with buttons to get you into a diagnostics menu (shows all sorts of pressures, temps, voltage etc), tool menus etc.
Yup, new camera. I still marvel at the quality even though it's a streaming video from a server somewhere. I have a couple more videos I just don't want to dump them all online at once.
@billymiller76 385 has more brute power and speed, 850 seems to have to use a long stick cycle to get the same amount of dirt in and you can never seem to cram that last little bit.
His truck has a larger turn radius then the other 3 so he wasn't going to make the turn. Then because he was unloaded and there was no weight on the rear tires he couldn't back up the slope (just spun) so his only option was to jump down into the cut and then try to make it back up the bank. Didn't work =p
@HomebrewCigarsmoker Sorry maybe I should have been more clear. The biggest you can get from Cat is 8yds and sure you can get an aftermarket one that's bigger but the machine probably won't handle it unless its light loose material and Cat will void your warranty. So yes you could make a 20yd bucket and put it on but for argument sake and staying within Cat spec no 8yds is as big as you go.
Smooth operating, know a pro when I see it. One question, is it better to pull yourself up a slope with the boom or push. I see lots of guys pull themselves up, but doesn't that dig a hole in the path your going and possibly pull the slope down?
Oh no much better than that. They split at the swing table, usually with a full bucket so you land with the whole top half flopped over and your bucket stuck in the back of a truck (still full of dirt).
hey new service bulletin put out by cat not to turn the tracks by using the boom down trick...wears out swing drive bearings and swing drive turns with no oil!
Why do you lift the tracks up by pushing down on the bucket to turn? I've noticed a few people do this. Is is so you don't tear up the ground with the tracks turning or to keep the gravel and dirt from being pushed into the track guides. The largest excavator I've operated is a 12k lb class with rubber coated tracks. Just curious for the knowledge.
It keeps from tearing up the ground, pulling dirt into the undercarriage like you said, keeps from side loading the track chains on the rollers and prevents you from ripping tracks off by accident.
Oh alright. Gotcha. Yeah I had a bad roller bearing and the track came off on me once. Smaller excavator though but still was a pain in the ass to put back on. I can imagine trying to put one of yours back on. I'd assume you'd need a crane to lift the track. Makes sense when you said to keep from side loading the rollers I didn't think of that. Those machines do weigh a lot.
much much much better to pull yourself up the slope. the weight is displaced perfectly and you are always in complete control. pushing yourself up can leave room for error
Oh yeah, what's the media number? And while you're making that up why don't you explain to me how you could possibly run a swing drive out of oil by lifting the tracks off the ground.
Those have a terribly nasty habit of splitting in half and landing in the back of truck =/ To be honest I really wouldn't mind taking one for a whirl anyways though!
Riiiiiight, that's why they made me a foreman when this job was completed right? And why Mythbusters called me to be an expert for their episode on excavators? And why Vista Training asked me to make video content for their products? Troll more.
there isn`t much in the difference in price between volvoA40E`s and a cat ejector over here!! not much goes wrong with volvo`s though solid truck!! did you ever hear of E.P.S.A.?? big spanish earthmoving contractors!! ther running similar gear to your company in ireland at the moment! there`s a video of there komatsu pc5500 at work in chile!!
Wow I see why the fuel tank on that B is bent to hell, no bus driver should ever run off the road like that and no excavator should ever pull him out like that. Ever heard of chains? You guys are lucky MSHA only visits 4 times a year because the way you operate I can guess you get alot of violations.
I get paid by youtube to produce content, so this is my job. Part of the reason this channel is popular is we interact with the viewers. I'm also on vacation so I can enjoy the things I work hard for. You seem pretty intent on trying to troll but seem to be running out of steam, what else you got champ?
@clamcrabber nah you wont be considered skilled or trustworthy for another 10yrs tho, there is a difference between someone that can run a piece of equipment and an operator.
It says right on our channel but since you can't figure it out I'll tell you. I live in Alberta, Canada. I was working in Calgary but now I'm not. Our videos are shot all over but this one in particular was also taken in Calgary. Oh and I don't think I'm all that, I just think you're ignorant and have no grounds for giving me proper operating procedure. There's nothing unsafe or illegal using this method and there's no damage being done to the equipment despite your alleged "expert" opinion.
So what is the majority of the work you do? How much do u get paid a year? I'm considering being a HEO( heavy equipment operator) mainly wanna do excavators
Fuel tanks not bent as you can clearly see at 2:52 and we aren't mining dipshit, nor are we located in the US. Only retards tow with chains, we have cables but there's no reason to waste 20 minutes waiting for a cable to show up when I can give him a tug on the inside of the box. As for the trucks driving we are starting a new switchback and the 773 has a wider turn radius than the previous two 769s, there wasn't enough room and couldn't back up empty (spun) so I pulled him over the bump.
@MrJamessproule We use stakes for reference and then I have a good eye for how deep I am by looking at the stake height (most stakes sit about 1.15m tall), bucket depth (bucket is around 2.30 if stood straight up and down), stick depth (3m to first bucket pin) etc. Once I get the first station or two on grade to see exactly where level (or the slope) is I can usually be within 10-15 centimeters with the 385. he should owe you a beer.

Great video Jason, Looks like some nice easy diggin for ya too. gotta love when trucks get stuck, lol.
They also cost 1.75 times more to buy here, and parts are more expensive. Plus there are a LOT of electrical bits in Volvos.
I have a new camera mount as well, so hopefully I can get some better angles in the future. Nice work you manage the shovel like your hand you are realy good had it

@adey88splace At the time of this video, two years running forestry equipment and 3 years on an excavator. 1 year on 375 and two on a 385.
Great to see your vids again bro!
You're right, and my six figure income allows me to buy all the unicorns I want!
Yup, new camera. I still marvel at the quality even though it's a streaming video from a server somewhere. I have a couple more videos I just don't want to dump them all online at once.
Great video, thanks for sharing..!
@billymiller76 385 has more brute power and speed, 850 seems to have to use a long stick cycle to get the same amount of dirt in and you can never seem to cram that last little bit.
you are amazing with that thing! where is this?
His truck has a larger turn radius then the other 3 so he wasn't going to make the turn. Great video, is this the new camera? The quality and detail are amazing! Thanks for posting another great earth moving video.
our worst operator is named chris lol

@MarcusVel13 Considering they are all full buckets and it's pitrun...no?
Smooth operating, know a pro when I see it.

@wailnshred yes his name is Mr. D11R.
Nice machine!!
once again good video and how was chris able to get stuck like that
The 5 series were plagued with problems and CAT stopped making the line.
oh ic well thats must of been a fun ride for him lol
hey new service bulletin put out by cat not to turn the tracks by using the boom down trick...wears out swing drive bearings and swing drive turns with no oil!
That was great man, i love bulk, no mucking around just dig all day....Nice!! =D
@paulo19801980 It's an 8 yard bucket, you can't go any bigger...
Nice job!!
Sure is! Powerstripe with GP boom and stick.
@TurboGSR96 hes canadian, and its a company called Kidco
I've watched a lot of your videos. Your skills are very inspiring. How long have you been operating?
ingenious!!! how long have you been operating these machines???
I used to operate a 790D for a tree service in the 90s
so does this new cat have a longer stick, than the other 385 you had before ???
For articulating trucks the Komatsus can go through a lot more. Cat wins on the larger scale trucks though.
great video there far hate being stuck at skwel much rather be out there doing what your doing and earning a living at 14
great machine!!!nice video !! bye colleague!!

Very Nice! I dig :)
much much much better to pull yourself up the slope. the weight is displaced perfectly and you are always in complete control. pushing yourself up can leave room for error
Where abouts are you located man?
He doesn't want to talk anymore about it or say where he's located.
what your worst fear when running that machine? just curious im wanting to do what you do.
@redheadedduckhunter I treat caffiene and food as valid currency.
Oh yeah, what's the media number? And while you're making that up why don't you explain to me how you could possibly run a swing drive out of oil by lifting the tracks off the ground.

@burna1111 Nope just look at the stake and cut it to grade by eye.
do you not use any volvo adt`s! there unbeatable round here!!
