The rubber key Speccy 48k was my first computer, bought with my first paycheck as a COBOL programmer way back in '83. I loved that thing like nothing else I've ever owned. I learned BASIC programming on it, spent hours typing in games from magazines, then more hours debugging the damn things when they inevitably failed to work properly. I played most of the classic games, and I distinctly remember being amazed by the technology and the sheer creativity of the people writing the games. When 'The Spectrum' caught my attention a few months back, I was in two minds about whether I wanted one. On the one hand: the nostalgia factor is *huge* - it looks just like the old Speccy, down to the swoosh of colours in the corner, but it's even better with the added hdmi and usb support. On the other hand: would I ever really use it? The games, being honest, are kinda rubbish compared to what's sitting right here on my gaming PC. On the other, other hand: the simplicity of the games can be a good thing - just dive in and out with no learning curve, no need to min-max your build, no endless reading of lore. Just play. Finally I decided earlier this week that no, I would not buy one. Well after watching your unboxing video followed by this one, you've talked me into ordering one online - should be here by Wednesday. Damn you, OG! Take my angry subscribe! 🤣 The first game I add will definitely be 'Impossible Mission', I played it endlessly but never managed to finish it. This is my chance to redeem myself. 😁
Great comment matey and appreciate the sub buddy 😎🍺 Thinking of doing a Speccy livestream this Sunday and gonna get some games ready to play… could be a great trip for many of us 😎🍺 I remember Impossible Mission… Epyx software if I recall? They did the Olympic sports type titles too 😎🍺
There's a ton of new homebrews in 128k, including Space Invaders, Ooze, Aliens Neo Plasma, and many great more. Don't dismiss it too quick. We know PS5 is better.
I got mine yesterday matey brilliant, it’s no good how many times you tell me I’m awful on pc’s😂. I’ve ordered a usb online loaded with speccy games👍🏻🍺😎.
I'm using the same old usb stick that I use to store my Atari 400 mini and C64 roms. It's working fine with my Spectrum roms. The stick was already formatted to FAT32.
@@OGDuffy TZXs preserve the original loader/hyperloader and can't be played at anything other than realtime in whatever emulator is in use. Maybe in a firmware update they'll fix this. TAP is instant loading (or near enough) because most emulators operate this way.

I downloaded all my faves on the Amiga but will be picking one of these up tomorrow with a 16gb stick Games I’d recommend Flying shark Renegade Footballer of the year Batty Myth New Zealand story R-type Batman 3d Batman the movie Chase hq And many many more Can’t wait to upload some games but those 48 pre loaded including my spect fave match day 2 is just immense and like you I honestly think this will be better as it’s rubber key time 😀😀👍👍👍 cheers Jonathan
Hey OG sir! Another belter of a video mate - super helpful indeed and much appreciated Guv’nor - five star indeed ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A quick question mate, did you need to update your firmware to do this? Cheers 🍻 OG and happy Saturday 👍🏻🕹️👾
@@RetroRS177 hi matey welcome aboard officially buddy 😉 Not updated the firmware myself yet matey but loving revisiting the old Speccy classics matey😎🍺
@ Thank you mate. I remember having to update firmware for my A500 and C64 so I thought I would check what you did. Much appreciated mate 👍🏻 Yup, can’t wait to dive into some Speccy retro goodness - being new to the system I’ll be watching your videos to get me up to speed on all things Spectrum! 👾🕹️👍🏻
I sincerely hope WOS (World of Spectrum) doesn't suddenly become unavailable it's been live for probably at least 25-Years, exactly the same GUI front-end as I remember. i have not visited the site for a while but probably will be again soon.
I've had mixed results with the USB side of things, Can't seem to get Ghouls and Ghosts running at all tape/tzx or snap file, just crashes out or locks up with buzzing noise sound. You have any luck with this game OGDuffy ?
Hi Duffy, hope you read this, I have mine coming tomorrow and I have followed your tutorial, cheers pal. I already have the retro games C64, actually got all the original units and games in the loft, but anyway. I cant wait to play movie which comes with it, and I was surprised it did, because doesnt seem much love for it but I love it, but I will be defo downloading Indiana Jones and TOD, Infiltrator, Renegade, Cybernoid 2, 720 degrees. So many to mention, i also cant believe they have added Where Time Stood Still, whic for me is the best game ever on the Speccy (128). I dont know if you have played it, but its an absolute classic game, its called ATF, it was on all platforms, I have Rasp Pii, and Ive played it on C64 Specyy and Amstrad, they even had a version on the Amiga, and its just mint. I can spend hours on ATF on any console. Cheers pal
@@johnworsley7717 hi matey and thanks for the great comment !!! Yep it’s amazing and so much fun revisiting the old days matey… Don’t remember ATF but will give it a look and thanks for the recommendation matey 😎🍺
Ive orderd the spectrum off amazon, usb with 1000 of games off ebay and a competiton pro usb joystick off ebay. Im hoping the usb with 1000s of games on is easy to use
I have a 16g usb stick and downloaded the 8g file, when I do flash from file in balenaEtcher and select the retrogames_usbstick_8gb file, I get an error message, error opening source. I'm using a laptop with Windows 10. Any ideas round this?
@OGDuffy I downloaded an older version of balenaEtcher than what was on the retro website, and it worked. I now have a validated USB stick. I'm now looking forward to playing Kikstart 2, Rex, R-Tyre, Paperboy Ghouls n Ghosts, Robcop and Airborne Ranger again.
Is there a maximum number of games that the spectrum will cope with or display on the USB drive, I have followed all the instructions on the website, there's quite a few games on the USB drive but its only displaying the numbers and part of A titles ?? can anyone help, thankyou. ( they are all from the same "games folder" I have and its not like its randomly showing titles they are all in alphabetical order, it just seems to only display a certain amount and I can't access rest)
If you’re binging, it can’t handle more than 246 folders that contain more than 246 sub folders. I went all in and dumped the entire library but there’s a lot of dross in there, far better to pick your favourite 100 or so games
Does anybody else have issues with their joystick or pad working with the usb games. All works well with the carousel games, but the usb games don't seem to recognise it.
'Close but no cigar' as they say. The Spectrum really needed a mic socket to load physical games as not everyone owns a PC; it's all smart phones these days. 😢
Last year I bought an adaptor that would plug into my phone at one end, with a USB slot at the other. It works great, bought a specifcally formatted for The Spectrum USB stick on for £11.99 on ebay (which had some games on too, which I had not realised when I bought it). I then went on World of Spectrum Classic, downloaded all the games I wanted to my phone, extracted each game file on my phone and then moved to the USB stick. Works on The Spectrum great. I am not technical person, but was easy enough. So no need for a PC.
@3minutegeardemos No probs, yes definitely a way. Check, but I think for me it is a USB C male to USB female adaptor. It initially didn't work, the files were on the stick, saw them in the USB stick in The Spectrum carousel but they would not open. Went back on my phone and selected 9ne of the files with a long press, chose the option 'extract to' and then 'current directory' and repeated for each file. I then dropped them into the USB again and all games worked thus time.
Do consider SUBSCRIBING... I appreciate the support 😉🍺 ➜ bit.ly/37l5aQx
