  • In today's video, I install and review a new product from Baja Designs for my Toyota Tacoma: the generation 2 Squadron SAEs! I have used the previous generation as fog lights the past few years on my Tacoma, so I had been wanting to try these out and let you guys know my thoughts on them.

    I purchased the original Baja fog's for my Tacoma a few years ago. I love Baja Designs, their products are next level but I did think their "fog" lights did not perform well as a fog light. Ended up selling them and purchasing the Diode fogs which performed (as a fog light) much better. Hopefully Baja's updated version performs better as a fog light.

    I like the brightness of the Gen 2, but I liked the slightly longer throw pattern. The lights do not do much good when you can only light up a few yards past the hood line. Nothing against you Chloe, but I hope you messed up something in the install. As it stands I would stick with my stock lights with illegal aftermarket LED bulbs.
    Baja Designs, if you are reading this... Do not stop selling the gen 1 units til you have come up with a gen 3... I LOVE your products, but it looks like you have a fail on this one. I consider good fogs to be more important than any other off road light here in east tennessee. We do not do a lot of desert racing here, but we do hit the back roads, or go rock crawling in dense woods. The Gen 1 SAE have been on my wish list since I got my tacoma.

      I mean if you don’t care that the Gen 1 aren’t really SAE compliant go and get a set of the Squadron Sports…they’re the exact same electrical power but they throw light quite a bit more outside of the cut off rectangle. They all still have a rectangular hot spot it’s more how much they spill outside of that. The Gen 2 SAE is very tight…

      Ive had the sports on my ram and for an actual fog light in the mountains where it gets really foggy and you have 5 ft of visability, the sports are way to bright and throw too far. What you need for actual fog is them to have a strong cut off like these new gen 2’s. That will help you see the white/yellow lines in the road. If you want long throw for offroading at night get the sports and who cares about street legal.

    • @tcbrown

      @@KrazyKyle012I agree that it’s too much light spilling upwards, but the gen 2 doesn’t have enough distance for highway travel during bad weather. That low cutoff point on the gen 2 might be okay on the trails at a crawl, but you’re not going to be a happy camper trying to use them during snow storms in the Rocky’s or in Alabama early morning fog. So what you believe a fog lights function and purpose should be is quite different from what other people may need them for. Personally, I would buy the gen 1’s and modify the black piece that snaps into the back side of the lenses since I need something with a little more distance without it being a driving light.

    I have white led low beams but I recently put yellow fog lights on my scion tc and the difference was like night and day (pun intended) I'm able to see through fog and the road during heavy rain. I almost feel like it should be a global safety requirement to have yellow fog lights, I can see much better now 👍

  • @RobinsonSST
    @RobinsonSST Год назад +1

    I am very happy the new versions have a distinct cutoff. With the old V1s people would flash their high beams at me and the actual throw distance of the V1s weren't very good compared to the competition. I sent my V1s in for the upgrade program last March, but turnaround time seems to be pretty slow (I would assume because of labor or chip shortages?) and have not heard back yet. Can't wait to get them back. In the meantime, I went with the Rigid D series because they have the most distinct cutoff. Can't wait to switch back to the V2s to compare when they arrive.
    I don't know if the test results of the below link are skewed because the testing was done by Morimoto, but allegedly, the V1s were not SAE compliant in the tests even though it claims to be SAE street legal. Anything to NOT be a cop magnet would be nice after blasting them in the face with non-compliant fog lights, haha. For the actual roads, the new V2s look to be a huge improvement. If you need light above the cutoff for offroad, then that is what offroad lights are for.

    They finally fixed them to be a proper fog light, which is good but IMO it took them way too long. Something to make note of though: they aren’t doing this out of the goodness of their heart. The existing SAEs were never a proper SAE pattern. They weren’t when they launched and they still weren’t when they put the black window template over the diodes to bring down the blinding effect of the original SAE design. So, this SHOULD be free and would be unacceptable to cost money to the user. I also am not a fan of the green hue of Baja “amber”. It’s not amber, or even yellow….it’s green.
    I prefer my Rigid 360s and will continue to recommend them over Baja, though I do have one other Baja product that I like (S1 flush mount work/scene). I think they just didn’t handle the SAE release properly and took way too long to fix it. At least both brands are far better than diode dynamics though.

    • @KrazyKyle012
      @KrazyKyle012 Год назад +1

      You are absolutely right about the free upgrade being due to the gen 1s not actually being SAE approved

    • @blthep1411
      @blthep1411 Год назад +2

      @@KrazyKyle012 yep. They aren’t doing anything admirable, they’re just trying to right their screwup. Those original SAEs were scrutinized mercilessly on the forum and they did not perform as a proper fog light at all.
      The new ones seem to finally fix that but it took WAY too long to get to this point.
      Also, it is complete crap that you have to send in your own lights to have them converted to gen 2 and wait for that to happen. They should be sending new gen 2s and buying back peoples 1’s.

    • @Maddog165
      @Maddog165 4 месяца назад

      They do not make a kit that will turn your Sport or Pro models into the SAE versions. I have inquired about this myself, as I have the Pro model squadron lights. I have even claimed that I have the SAE Gen 1 model that was “damaged” damaged when I hit a deer (a white lie) that broke the lenses and projector bulbs and was hoping I could buy and have them send me the replacement parts. They said the only way to get them repaired would be to send them in to be fixed. I do off roading and also live in a rural area where I use them to avoid hitting deer and other wildlife. I turn them on and off when other cars are coming at me. I’m not sure if I really want to get the conversation for SAE lights and lose 1500 lumens per light. 4000 lumens for Pro model and 2500 for SAE. I’m thinking of just buying the SAE version and keeping my Pro models for strictly off-road use.

    I’ll tell you that bracket design isn’t premium. I installed a set yesterday and it’s hot garbage. The updated bracket one tab is punched out in such a way that the EPDM has barely anything to stick to. The fact that they’d give you some ridiculous rubber stickers feels BEYOND ghetto.
    Then there’s the matter of the side with the screw. If you just screw it down the outside edge makes contact with the fog light escutcheon effectively toeing the lights in and making the gap around the perimeter uneven (the OEM are almost perfectly even) unless you put a couple washers in front of the bracket which in turn reduces screw engagement.
    I may just end up 3D printing some tabs and spacers to get these things perfect but for $430 Baja should be ashamed of what they stick in the box for brackets esp when you can see the likes of Diode Dynamics and Rigid tool proper injection molded parts that actually fit the bumper properly.
    Apart from that (and missing screws) and wonky DIY part of the connectors (if you get it backwards you’re f’d as it won’t come apart and yes Green is positive on the Toyota harness) it’s great. FWIW - Lights draw 2.25A at 13.8V for 31W pretty efficient that said they do get pretty hot in hand.
