- Easy Crochet Shell Stitch 🌟BONUS MATERIAL🌟 || Free Shell Stitch Baby Blanket Pattern.
The crochet shell stitch is a really easy stitch pattern that uses basic crochet stitches. And yet it's a really beautiful, effective crochet stitch that you can use in a variety of ways. For example, the crochet shell stitch is a beautiful stitch for an edging. Or you can use it to make a whole blanket like you do in this free crochet blanket pattern.
Get the free crochet shell stitch pattern here: marlybird.com/...
Pattern includes written instructions, and stitch counts for various sized blankets from Baby to Throw sized. You'll also get access to a handy chart that tells you what common crochet blanket sizes are. This is useful whether or not you decide to make this shell stitch blanket.
Note: @10:18 I said single crochet and it is actually a double crochet you work into for the first stitch.

Is there a written pattern? I prefer video and written pattern
I made a shell baby blanket 40 years ago for my oldest daughter who just turned 40. She still has it. I also made one for my second daughter who will be 37 this year and still has it. I was looking at a couple other videos and you made it so easy. I could follow along and pause it when I was confused. I now just started crocheting again after all those years ago. I made a granny square throw blanket for my cousin this past Christmas. I forgot how much work it was to put them together but I survived. I have been practicing a couple of new stitches and would do them over & over until I got it right. Anyway thank you so much!😺 you are very pretty lady!
Carolyn Kopp
thank you.
This tutorial is GREAT! Never have I ever had straighter edges while crocheting!
Love the stacked double crochet!
You are so easy to follow with this shell stitch pattern. Thanks for showing how it is done!😊
What a great tutorial--especially the one regarding the standing double crochet edging.
I love the way you are starting your double crochet rows. It looks so much nicer. This idea is now in my toolbox! Thanks Marly!
Fantastic
Crocheting is so much easier than knitting. Or maybe it’s because I learned how to crochet when I was a kid,I’m 60 now I’m just learning knitting.
crochet is way better ❤
I'm also learning to knit. I been crocheting since I was about 3. I'm in my 50s now
It's funny how the ombre yarn does it's own thing and looks amazing! And thank you Marly Bird for the bonus tip for the beginning chain 3 substitution!
You’re welcome
Wow🌺 you must be a woman with a good heart. I thought about finding out more about you and also being your friend, but I don't want to be disrespectful to you
Thank you for showing me the stacked double crochet. It looks so much better than chaining 3.
I keep coming back! I just wanted to say that I tried the stacked DC, and it was so easy.. My daughter has asked for a shell baby blanket, and I’m going to yes that cool tip on it. I have never liked how that first ch3 looks.., messy. The stacked DC looks nice and near. Thanks, again. Now I will go away... 😊💜
Thank you so much for changing colors with each row. Made learning a new stitch so much easier!
I love the stdc myself and use it for all my blankies and scarves I design and now a shawl. I love my things straight too. Loved your video Marly💜🧶💜
I jut bought some Red Heart Ombré! I just found the beautiful Afghan I’ll be making! Thank you for sharing!
I love this pattern and have made three long prayer shawls with it. They all look wonderful and the drape is delightful. But, I also thought, for cold winters it would be nice to have this same pattern in a "denser" format. Using this layout, I created a dense, easy shell pattern based on this pattern. First time, other than a few minor adjustments [like using DC instead of HDC, for instance] that's I've "rewritten" a pattern. I am very satisfied with the result. The yarn I used helped a lot, too, I think, a 100% organic merino treated wool [no itch] given to me by a kind woman that has fed my desire to make prayer shawls the last 10 years.
Just happened up on your video for shell stitch blanket. Loved your instructions and the extra tip for ends! Will save time not having to put tassels or border! Thanks…
I love your tutorials. Learn how to knit and crochet with you. Thank you.
I love your hooks, plus I also do the stacked sc to make an hdc and dc. I find it easier to make.
Thanks 🙏 for showing me the stacked stich look fun so will try it and loved the blanket xx 😘 and I love 💕 your Chanel Wendy uk 🇬🇧 xx been crocheting since I was 14 and not put a needle down yet but I’ve learnt so so many things on RUclips my first crocheted blanket was made from on pick jumpers back in the 70s my grandma and my next door neighbour told me I couldn’t get wool from a wool shop until I had made that blanket I still have it so that just goes to show that they were right but I love wool and when I go into a wool shop now it like walking into a sweetie shop I’ve a lot to thank my grandma and the lady that lives next door to me show me how to crochet xx 😘
Omg besides learning this beautiful pattern, is the tip for the stacked double crochet edging, no more loosey goosey chain 3s for me lol it is an edging I never liked because I am such a loose crocheter and this tip just stepped up my crochet game. You rock miss Marleybird! Your tutorials make things so much easier to learn. Hugs!
I like your stacked double crochet. I have never seen it before.
It’s my favorite!
Your tutorial is super! I chose yours among several to learn how to shell stitch. Thank you!!!🎉
When you first started the stitch I was so mesmerized by that awesome looking crochet hook you have I realized the first few minutes I wasn't paying attention like I should have been. I was able to catch on though and love this stitch! Really pretty. 👍😁
Marly... The shell has been my go to for pretty baby blankets for years... It never fails. Everyone loves the look.
Wow... That stacked thingy is great... Your edges looked so good.. Going to try it, for sure. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you so much for the lovely pattern. I love the tip for the stacked single crochet on the ends. I will be using that from now on as I love that look better then the ch 3
You are so welcome!
Love your tutorial. Thanks for showing how to do a stacked single crochet.
Thank you I enjoyed your demo, you are very pretty, lovely skin
Thank you :)
Thank you so much for this tutorial and the tip about the stacked single crochet stitch. I struggle to keep my sides really straight. I've tried your tip and it works so well. Thank you, thank you, thank you from Indiana! I retired this school year and I've taken up crocheting again. I work every day at it. I started watching You Tube to learn new stitches and I'm so much improved now!
The colors used to teach the stitch look good together.🤩for how you teach can’t wait to by some ombré yarn to try the stitch😻🧶
Easy pattern for a beginner. Thanks for the tip at the end.
Thank you so much for this video!! I went out of my comfort zone and tried the sea shell stitch and made a beautiful baby blanket! I am definitely going to look for more of your projects! Again, I thank you!
Thank you for the video! Nice clear instructions! Easy to follow. I’m off to make a baby blanket and it’s coming out so pretty.
This is the simplest she'll blanket pattern I've seen! Thank you ❤️
I Love the way you teach. 💕 it's so calming and understandable. Thanks 💞
Love how u took time to show how you did the shell stitch, thank you.
You are so welcome!
Thanks for that double-stack tip! Was looking for inspiration and came across your video. I’ve used the shell stitch before but usually ended up needing to add a border. Can’t wait to start my new project 😊
Thank you so much for explaining and showing us about putting the clip in the stitch and using different colors. This is a new pattern for me but when I saw this on other videos, I always messed up.
Great tutorial. Easy to follow and very informative. I'll try this for my next blanket. Stay safe and healthy.
What a great idea for the edging, stacked double crochet.. thanks 👍🌟😊
Wow🌺 you must be a woman with a good heart. I thought about finding out more about you and also being your friend, but I don't want to be disrespectful to you
Thank you so much for this video, I wish I had found it sooner. Well, I am going to make this pattern anyway. I will save it for the next time I need a baby blanket. This is so pretty and I think I I ready to make this one. I have been crocheting since I became ill several years ago. I think crocheting has saved my life. I was unable to use my arms for several months. I started crocheting to pass the time I had already read 39 books I was able to use my hands and by crocheting I was able to regain the use of my arms it was slow but I think I am doing pretty well. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.
Love this. Do i count 6 till I reach the size i want then at the end add two.thank u Sally Roberts💕
Yes, that's how you do it. :)
Thank you so much Marly for showing me.
Never made a shell blanket before.
Just a granny blanket, and dollies..
So I made to watch you every now & then to remember how you done in it ..
I love how you do that, it is is beautiful, doing mine with trimming of beige, then change my colour to red continues..
Your stacked double for the turn is beautiful. It is also not on the written pattern, which is okay. However have you thought of putting a little TnT leaflet together for your fan girls(and guys)? Ooo maybe you have one already! Your tips n tricks are really good . Tamara has good ones and a few other independent RUclipsrs do too. For me, I love, love, love boarders and hate, hate, hate to do them. For me it's like sewing granny squares together. From these hands, ain't neva gonna happen, oh no. All my granny anything are big, single squares or rectangles. Joining motifs is the single reason I have not made an African flower animal. I shouldn't say never to boarders, I've been known to add a round of single or double crochet around a blanket, but that's about it. So a tip like your stacked stitch is perfect for me. I've seen so many alternatives to that ch 3, and all that goes through my head is no that does not look great, better maybe but not right. I would them think (God's honest truth the following would be in my head, never said aloud) it has to be like a sc on top of a sc, stacked like a two story building. Perhaps if I ever said it aloud I'd have tried something on my own, but I never had the materials while I was watching, and have no faith in my crochet abilities. Tips n tricks are so empowering and are real confidence builders. Thank you. This is one I will likely never forget. I hate gappy ch 3 sides. If my edges come out like yours, this may be my go to blanket. (Have you ever seen the incredible boarders Christa, of the Secret Yarnery, makes? Works of art. I think of knit & crochet as art to begin with. Some of her boarders leave me awestruck.) Well anyway, I enjoy learning from you and watching your vids even if it is something I wouldn't do. I've done a little knitting but very little, talking ribboned yarn making ruffle scarves back in the 1990's, so I don't know if that counts. But you make me want to try. Thanks again and stay well.
I must admit, I do love variegated yarn. I'm going to try your color pooling method as soon as possible. Love the bonus tip
It's true that this pattern is very easy for a beginner like me. Thanks a lot!
This is my go to stitch when I want something quick. Thank you for showing me how to do it.
Hi Marly... This is one of my fav stitches. It makes beautiful baby blankets.. That stacked DC tip is awesome... Thanks..
Wow you must be a woman with a good heart. I thought about finding out more about you and also being your friend, but I don't want to be disrespectful to you
This has always been my favorite pattern now with your technique for the stacked starting stitch it will be so much better. Thank you.
Stacked double crochet. That’s very clever! That saves me to do borders. 😜😍
It really cleans up the side nicely.
I'm seen lots of alternatives for chain 3 but the one you show is my favorite.😊
Yay! Thank you!
Love this! Thank you so much! Awesome, clear tutorial! God bless! 😊❤️
Thank you for this lovely pattern Mary. And thank you for the tip for the ends. You’re a star x
Love the relaxing music in the background and the stacked stitches are easy to do ❤️❤️
Love this pattern.
Thanks again! Another wonderful video including the stacked double crochet!!!
Everything about your videos are soothing. Thank you.
Thank you.
thank you so much for these lessons I'm grateful
I love this Stitch, easy and so Beautiful ❤️🦋
Absolutely gorgeous
This may be my next project! When will the PDF be available? Trying to figure out how much yarn I need for a throw blanket!
Hi molly love shell stitches....thank you for vidio....GOD BLESS HAPPY KNITTING
OMG thank you for putting that stitch marker in and showing us where it goes. I have messed up many projects by not being able to figure out the ends and starts of rows. I am realizing that I need to work up samples for practice before trying another project. What kind of yarn did you use in this sample? It looks different than the redheart yarn. I would love to see how you changed yarn. Your nails look marvelous by the way. :)
Great tutorial Marly! I love the stacked double crochet. So much neater. I’m currently making a baby sweater using this stitch pattern. It’s so pretty!
Great
😊
Oh these looks like the ombré yarn from Michaels!!!
Thank you so much for all of your wonderful tutorials! I just finished all the beginner videos and I found that you explain how to do them extremely well! My mom recently passed away from cancer & she was in the middle of making my daughter a blanket when she passed. She taught me years ago and watching your videos helped refresh my memory, however I can not figure out which stitch she was doing. It looks like the seashell stitch but I’m not positive. Would anyone be willing to take a look at a picture of it and tell me what stitch you think she was doing? I would love to finish this blanket for my mom & my daughter. Thank you Marly!!
Wow this is the one of your videos Ive watched and I really enjoyed how you explain step by step what you're doing. I will definitely watch more of your videos. Keep up the good work!
Is there a good way to finish the last row? I’m halfway through my this blanket and the foundation and sides look amazing with the stacked edges but I’d love to ensure the end is nice and straight too 🥺🥺
Very pretty and easy love it.Instructions very clear thanks so much.
You’re welcome
Marly you are very good tutorial instructor. Thank you for sharing this lovely pattern with us! 💕💕💕
First, thank you for the great pattern and the tutorial on the stacked DC. I use it all the time. It makes great sides for blankets. Second, how or did you put a straight edge on the shell end to finish it? I don't see a shell edge on the blanket you show. Thanks again for all the great projects.
This is wonderfully mindless! Thank you for sharing. I'll continue to watch !!
Hi marly I would really like to learn how to crochet but I can't get the hang of it as I've always knitted and just can't seem to master it at all .I would like to do it as I have loads of wool to use up .
very pretty and easy to follow along
Ms. Bird you crochet beautifully. If I want to make this shell blanket how many stitches would you start with to make a nice size throw? I want to use the regular Red Heart yarn. Thank you in advance for your help.
Wow I really like to try it's you make it seem really easy . Thanks 🤗
Hello from Germany! I am new to crocheting, and I must say I love your videos. You make it seem so easy and so much fun. You have such talent! I have a question in regards to your added bonus tip on the stacking chain. On this pattern, after I do the foundation chain, you turn and need to chain 3 i believe for the second row, do I apply your tip starting with my second row and every row thereafter. I have subscribed and looking forward to using many of your tutorials. Thank you again and look forward to your response.
Yes. Whenever there is a ch 3 to start you can use the stacked DC
I learned so much from this and from the videos of Cassiekoy Crochet as well. Good job both.
I love this pattern 🌹

It’s a Susan Bates hook and I got it from Etsy.

Simply beautiful!
I love your Stacked DC. I use it whenever I can! Thanks Marly!

Thank you so much 🤗
@@MarlyBird I finished my shell blanket and it's beautiful! 😍 I put a wave border on it to go with the beach theme 🐚 🌊 I also wanted to say that the stacked double crochet to start a row of double crochet (instead of chaining) was a game changer for my projects! My edges are so much neater. Thanks again for sharing!!! 🧡
This is lovely Marly, thank you!
