This is the only tutorial all over the internet that shows properly how to get your Level Management / Gain Staging done the right way! Thank you so much!
NONE of the other tutorials actually show how gain staging works in context of setting your fader levels (static mix), none of them even mention it.Thanks for this!
Been using logic for 15 years and never knew about pre fader metering! Doh! This is why I love logic always learning something new! Thanks for the video
SO IMPORTANT!. I've been fighting with Logic for years never knowing about this absolutely fundamental capability in the product. I've spent so MUCH time learning to become a better mixer and mastering the entire Izotope suite of products and dozens of Waves and other plug-ins (which has taken years) to get the best sound, never realizing there is an extremely import "First Step" that can make your life so much easier down the road. Thanks for sharing this and thanks to Google for showing me this video in a search result, otherwise I'd never have figured this out because Logic doesn't make accessing this capability easily intuitive and there is no mention f this in any "Starter" literature provided. Why Apple hid this capability from plain sight is beyond my comprehension. But after following your instructions I levelled every track in a song with several dozen tracks and suddenly the entire project became manageable. What an amazing difference this makes. Thanks again!
@@unlockyoursound jumping in to ask how in the world you found that House music female vox loop?! I’ve typed in house vox in the loop library search multiple times before just to have something there to work with and holy hell I click on this video and look at you with a dope ass vocal sample
New to Chris. This dude is money in the bank, Clear exposition from start to finish on level setting Impossible not to be a better mixer with this information. Appreciation.
Best Logic Gain Staging tutorial and I've watched A LOT!!! I'm such a dummy. The Region gain didn't work for so i put a gain in every channel. Now I realize I probably tried the region gain with a software instrument. I'm a dummy
This is the best tutorial on the subject I've seen. Thank you for helping to demystify. I've been trying this out on a track that is nearly ready for mixing but some of my recorded guitar is way too hot and using any of these methods takes the guts out of the sound. Do you recommend using pre fader mode to monitor when recording guitars?
Damn...I've been recording my own music (strictly on a hobbyist level!) for 15 years, and I just learned something incredibly important. No wonder my mixes always suck! Thank you Christopher :D
@The Rainmaka lol it's every bit as game changing as a cheat code. Looking back, this has made a bigger change in my sound than anything I've learned since. Happy mixing to you!
That was fascinating. What an interesting technique. This has never, ever occurred to me and I haven't seen anyone else talk about it. I often put a -6dB Gain plugin on a lot of tracks. I will try this out next session.
Chris your Invaluable tutorial on Level Management, Gain Staging, and Pre-Fader Metering has been so important to me. It really helps me adjust certain waveforms that are either too loud or too soft... But I tried using this technique on a vocal with overdubs, but as soon as I select the region I need to work on, everything after the mute and loop area in the Inspector disappears. No, quantize, Transpose or Gain... nothing. If you can help, you will save my life again. Please keep up the amazing videos and valuable information! Thanks, Christopher.
A lot of gain staging tutorials out there but i thought this one was to the point and makes the most sense. I always would here advice about -12 being nominal but did not know they were talking about instrument tracks instead of the output. What an epiphone cheers.
For me, I'd avoid putting a gain plug in on the master bus to get a higher output. I'd send the stereo bounce to mastering with that 9dB of headroom intact. Let mastering boost the level.
yeah same even if you do your own makeshift masters to play out -9 is a good level to play with, especially when you want to stack limiters and comps. everything else in this vid is pretty awesome though. i was scratching my head with some of the other methods on youtube, they are more geared towards working with audio.
Solid, fam. This is right on. I couldn’t get the gain on my 2i2 low enough to record my super hot pickups, (DI). Thought channel gain was the way to go, but region gain rules…..and pre fader recording from now on. Respect.
It's the best video by far with this kind of information, and I' ve watched a lot !!! Huge thanks, and respect to the wonderful content and explanation!! Instantly subscribed!!
dude you are genius (until I try this and see if it works hahah) to think I have been struggling with logic for years, and here is you tut on it. I'm going to watch all your vids DAMMIT
Hey nice beginner tutorial -- straight and to the point! I use this same concept in Traktor. All the levels of the songs are set to +/- zero and the master output is set to - 6. These settings give me a + / - zero reading on the input faders and + / - zero on the master output of my mixer. These are the perfect settings to get maximum sound out of my PA system.
This is the best video on the topic I’ve ever seen. Thanks my friend. Top quality Leaving a bit more headroom for mastering is detrimental as opposed to pushing it up when mixing down, as per your suggestion? I have tried mixing down leaving up to 10db and then pushing up during mastering and results were pretty good
This whole freaking time it was that simple... You don't even need the damn gain stock pi... ALL OF THE VIDEOS SHOWING other complex ways. The whole time this was easily built in... OMFG! Thanks for this! I do have one question though. When using analog or analog simulation do you still need a VU?
Thanks for watching! Nah, with this method you’ll have enough headroom. At least most modelling plugins will have an input and output controls inside anyway. Happy producing!
Thanks so much for an awesome explanation. I have a question please: when gain staging is done, can the stereo out level be increased, or do we get to increase the sound of the tracks at later stages in the process.
Yes, you can apply gain at the Stereo Out level which will change the level of the whole mix but retain the relative levels between instruments. Cheers
applying this to my podcast. I have skype call-ins and one of my co-hosts has a huge dynamic range.. it is a nightmare to edit. also appying your flex method as well. But, that may be too tedious to do for an hour and a half episode every week though
💯 great tutorial... Never really thought about the importance of signal flow of each track.. Always focused on master output level.. Can't wait to implement in my tracks 🆙👊🏾
Thank you dude!!! >w< We have to use Logic and Ableton at the school I attend. While I love (and am pretty used to) Ableton, I've been really struggling with Logic -- mostly because I didn't really understand how to read the meters and adjust them properly! Thank you so much for this video, it helped a bunch. (Everything's so obvious now that I watched this. Lol.)

same here. instead of relying too much on third party plug ins that you need to learn as well i might use that time to learn all about my DAW.

Hands down the best tutorial I've had on gain staging. Thanks
Best explanation of gain staging for Logic Pro X ever... This is exactly how it is supposed to be done.
This is the best tutorial I've ever had about pre-fading. Its all I needed to make the best and balanced sound.
Cheers!

its crazy how well i understand you on the comprehensive level. glad i found your stuff in the first week with logic
Glad to hear it! Happy producing, Dale!
Never understood the power of Pre Fader Metering until this video. Thank you!
Happy to help!
Oops, did this AFTER mixing, but it still improved the "being able to hear everything" by 100% Now I can fine tune. Thanks.
Glad it still helped!
Exactly what I have been looking for since ages. The metering!!!!!
Thank you! Hands down the best tutorial on Gain Staging! 🔥
You giving up major keys in this video people don’t know 🔥🔥🔥
haha thank you!
Finally a person who explains it the right way!

Wonderful.......... the penny dropped after seeing your gain staging demo........ I'm delighted with what I've learned from you!!!!! Thanks!
Glad to hear it, Ross! Have a lovely time producing music and enjoying the process.

Hey Chris!!! :) Didn't know you had tutorials!! you ROCK!! Thx for sharing!

@@randman21 Likewise my friend. Blessings ✊🏾
Fantastic tutorial, very helpful. I was able to (roughly) mix my very first song today after 10+ unmixed beats. Thank you!
Thanks- Totally sorted this out for me- I'd never clocked it and it s fundamental to working on a clean mix-Keep doing the tutorials.
Glad it helped!

crazy how much better it sounds even barely mixed after you gain staged it. Thanks for the video!
