Wow great job sage well done, especially at that altitude, sounds like you’ve been putting in the mileage.... setting yourself up nicely for Rotterdam!
Great work! Looking good for Rotterdam, tough workout. Thanks so much for all inspiring videos! I did 8x1km on the track here in Stockholm the other week. Would not have happened without videos like this from you. I`m running in Rotterdam too, shooting for a new pr!
That’s awesome! I recruited for the Marine Corps out of Pueblo and my area was from Pueblo West to Buena Vista. I used to take my kids that enlisted awaiting boot camp to that track plus the Salida Mt. (the hill with the S for runs on it at least twice a month!
Good to watch - thanks for sharing it. To my non-expert eye, your form looked good throughout the session. Really hope you achieve your goal in Rotterdam.
Another great video and breakdown of your track session. I enjoy these types of videos the most -- the combination of different footage (drone and from your friend and Sandi) to show the running action, and your comments/explanation of what's going in your mind during the workout! If you're training at that high altitude with wind, I'd say that was a pretty solid workout. The music is awesome, too. Good luck in Rotterdam and I hope that you get that OTQ!!
I cannot believe it :) A year ago I run Copenhagen, you run Copenhagen. This year I am going to run Rotterdam and guess who is running the same marathon?! :) I hope we will not have hot weather again! :) :) :) Good luck Sage and I wish you 2:16 marathon
Just did the same wkout as you in Santa fe at over mile high. Did 12x1k got down to 2:56. Not happy with the training here. I'm going back to NYC for a bit to get in faster running. My speed is really suffering and not being able to break my 13:50 is quite disappointing despite how hard I'm training up here. Keep inspiring bro!
Sage, cheering for you at Rotterdam! Hope you get your redemption and crush it! Sucks you wont be at Boston, was hoping to meet you. Nice job on the workout btw
I wouldn’t worry about your time now for the marathon. It is unwarranted stress. Just knock out those km’s that’s why we call it training! As runners we have good days and bad days even within a week. Keep positive!
Nice workout- thanks for sharing with us! I know exactly how it feels to be off a bit at the start of a hard track workout and struggling to finish it. I’m never sure if it’s more beneficial for physical conditioning or for mental toughness. Either way, it’s great.
hell of a workout, especially at altitude and with the weekly volume you've done this week!! Those 1kms averaged out at my 3km pace which was ran at altitude indoor with no wind 😂 all the best for Rotterdam, fingers crossed for you to get that OTQ this time round
Thanks for posting this video! Love all the training talks and workout videos as well. Did a similar (8×1000m) workout earlier this week in my lead up to Boston so our marathons are only a week apart. Will you post videos about your ideas on tapering and the different schools of thought, as well as your approach? I've heard everything from tapering in mileage and intensity as far as a month out all the way to peaking in both 10 days before race. And should you change your strategy based on workout performances leading up to race day? Anyway, thanks for the update! Best of luck in the final few weeks of training - I have all the confidence in the world that you have the fitness and mental fortitude to accomplish your goal!
taper phase generally 2 weeks out. 3 weeks can be slightly lower mileage though too and really no more super hard long runs within 2.5 weeks out. Taper mileage and keep some intensity (esp at slightly faster than goal marathon pace). But nothing hard in the last 1.5 weeks for sure.
@Eric Capostagno oh ok is that all hokas? Because I've run 2500km in the last two year in cavu, clifton, napali, clifton and arahi and have had precisely zero quality issues beyond the clifton hot spot which you can wk around. In fact compared to previous 5 years running in saucony the thing that struck me most was hoka's longevity. I routinely get over 500k from a pair and saucony would be unusable by this point. Why did I switch? This guy.
yes, they haven't changed the OTQ for 2020...it will still stay at 2:19 for the US Trials for next year at least. Who knows what will happen in the future though...and it makes it really hard for the 2:12 or so guys to make the Olympic Team!
Great runner, love to see your training videos, hope you’ll get good result in your coming marathon. Does tracer 2 fit to size ? I am interested in this shoes.
I think they are too aggressive. It might even be worse with the 5km and the lack of opportunity to "time-trial" in races. I'm not worried bout making the Olympics so it doesn't influence me yet (unless they did away with the US trials in the future or lowered the OTQ as well)...but I feel for the guys that might run 2:13-2:12 at the Trials (if even) and not make the Olympic Team...and for guys from other countries who are really good with a 2:12 but can't make the Olympics.
he should do more plyometrics, like single leg squat jumps and over all explosive movement, when he hits the ground he rolls off his foot a lot and doesnt engage his hip-flexors and glutes enough to be springy. good workout tho
Interesting that with living where you do, going up 1500' (?) would have such an impact you could feel it on the first rep. Is altitude a nonlinear scale kinda like decibels or something?
Hey, Mr. Canaday, Im an amateur runner, and i’ve read some books, like Daniels, and its written that lactate threshold usually are longer duration. Even so, the video title says its lactate training. So im kinda lost . Can lactate exercises be done in small (3min) reps? Thanks :) May god bless you, Sage!
See Daniels "Cruise Intervals" this hit closer to Critical Velocity or what I used to call "Pre-Vo2max"....the paces would've been LT if I was at sea level. You can train the Threshold in lots of different ways...20-min Tempo Run... 40-60min Uptempo Run....Fartleks, and these kinds of "Cruise Intervals" (1km-1mile repeats with fairly short rests)
it was slightly...that's why I said Critical Velocity in the video also...something I used to call "Pre-Vo2max". The paces where Lactate Threshold (at sea level)...the intensity went between Vo2max and LT though because of the altitude/wind. You can see it in the HR data. I hit 170. My threshold is closer to 167-168. If it was a pure Vo2max workout i'd only do 6-8 x 1km and I'd increase the rest to 2:30 to try to run them a bit faster
At 120ish miles a week how many miles do you cover on speed days? What type of workouts do you get in? Do you follow a 1 or 2+ week cycle? By that I mean how long does it take you to get through all types of workouts
see my "weekly recap" vlog videos....this past 7 days I did "3 quality sessions" including this one. The other was 16 x 400m @70 sec and the other was 2 x 1 mile @5:00ave; 6-mile Uptempo @5:27 ave. pace, 1 mile @4:59...other workouts were at altitude in Boulder (5300').
Would be great if Sage would learn to use manual focus on his camera and set it for the distance between the camera and himself, instead of the camera auto focusing on the building 30 yards behind him....
shoutout to the drone for doing the workout too

High altitude workout for you.
Highly motivating video for the rest of us.
love all the corrections. funny how much slower it looks on the close shots but the overhead looks so much faster
I love these workout videos. Very inspiring to see a pro working hard.
That workout was quality. Good job Sage.
Also love the tracer 2, did my track workout yesterday in it too :)
That’s awesome! I recruited for the Marine Corps out of Pueblo and my area was from Pueblo West to Buena Vista. I used to take my kids that enlisted awaiting boot camp to that track plus the Salida Mt. (the hill with the S for runs on it at least twice a month!

This was awesome to witness. Awesome grit which will also pay off later in the race!
The drone shots were really nice. Good workout and thanks for sharing.
I love to see the Sage struggle. This is rare. Get your moneys worth!!!
Way to push through until you finished all 10. You inspire good sir!
you're an inspiration, Sage! great music, too! I've been using your half training plan and I run this Sunday! Good luck to us both...
I cannot believe it :)
A year ago I run Copenhagen, you run Copenhagen. This year I am going to run Rotterdam and guess who is running the same marathon?! :)
I hope we will not have hot weather again! :) :) :)
Good luck Sage and I wish you 2:16 marathon
that drone footage though!!!!
Love the new drone feature for the workout!! This is dope
Love the sunglasses. What are they? and love the video too
Thanks! They are the ROKA "halsey" model

Hello, I listened to your podcast yesterday, it was very inspiring ☺️
Speed is suffering... 2:56 per km 12 times?! :)
Your 5K time is faster than national record in my country!
This makes me want to work harder, I want to run a 38min 10k I think I can do it!
One can definetly see that your running form has improved! Gj mate
Sage, cheering for you at Rotterdam! Hope you get your redemption and crush it! Sucks you wont be at Boston, was hoping to meet you. Nice job on the workout btw

dig the sunglasses!
Great job!
I hope to see you in the comrades marathon in South Africa.
Hey Sage loved the brief review of your Hokas. Can you do more reviews or mentions on Hoka sneakers? Thanks.
This isn't normal this speed. Love the camerawork. Looking forward to following you in Rotterdam✌🏾
hell of a workout, especially at altitude and with the weekly volume you've done this week!! Those 1kms averaged out at my 3km pace which was ran at altitude indoor with no wind 😂 all the best for Rotterdam, fingers crossed for you to get that OTQ this time round
Good luck on marathon ...you have worked hard ...
Amazing boss!

Great video sage. Nice work. I'll try a variation of this. Cheers
A few 3:13s on 3/13. Solid stuff, Sage
Can you make a video on your opinion on altitude tents?
Happy to see you suffer to Sage! Cause sometimes I get the feeling that I am the only one 😉. Hope to meet you in Rotterdam. Cheers, Rogier
I suffer a lot all the time.
but it is running induced and self induced so it is all part of why the sport is so challenging!
really bugs me that hoka doesn't sell the shirts and jackets you wear.. pure retail evil
@@ironmantooltime wow that was unnecessarily violent 😂
@@TheYondaime008 that's what she said 😁
@Eric Capostagno yea buddy, and hokas don't fall apart. Go figure
@Eric Capostagno oh ok is that all hokas? Could You do video about exercises for core/strength? Some homework to do when rest from running.
Rotterdam in 3 weeks!! great. I hope you do well and enjoy it. Also looking forward to the video!! You must be starting to taper soon. Good luck!
New sunglasses sponsor on the way Sage? Look like goodr to me, my pair is certainly more goodr than my last sunnies
Beast 💪💪👍👍
Sage, I would like to hear your thoughts on the new IAAF standards. Will a 2:19 marathon still be enough to make the trials? Good luck!
yes, they haven't changed the OTQ for 2020...it will still stay at 2:19 for the US Trials for next year at least. Who knows what will happen in the future though...and it makes it really hard for the 2:12 or so guys to make the Olympic Team!

keep going man
Would love to hear your thoughts on the new IAAF qualifying standards. Especially since the marathon 'A' standard dropped so much.
I think they are too aggressive. It might even be worse with the 5km and the lack of opportunity to "time-trial" in races. JNJ! Vintage Sage
Hi sage great video. Quick question where can i buy that long sleeve you are wearing??
What watch are you using coach?
Yeah, train smarter, instead of just harder. I like that. :D
The wind is awful. We did a 1k workout yesterday and it was awful with 15 mph wind. Plus the grass was all muddy and there was holes everywhere
hi Coach Canaday, for such training normally how to set the rest time btwn rep
What are the sunglasses that sage wears?
Sage what's your thought's on getting volume in through sprint drills for example Askip for 100m then jog back, Bskip for 100m then jog back etc.
track kinda sucks but it helps sooo much! xD Great job Sage!
he should do more plyometrics, like single leg squat jumps and over all explosive movement, when he hits the ground he rolls off his foot a lot and doesnt engage his hip-flexors and glutes enough to be springy. good workout tho
Interesting that with living where you do, going up 1500' (?) would have such an impact you could feel it on the first rep.
Is altitude a nonlinear scale kinda like decibels or something?
yes, and pressure/temperature influences O2 density as well....keep in mind this was actually almost 2000' higher than Boulder
Are you currently in Boulder? I would love to train with you while you're around.
OQT!!!
Hi Sage, im a dutch marathon runner. Im searching for a 2.40-2.35 training plan. Is there a training plan like that?
Hey, Mr. Canaday,
Im an amateur runner, and i’ve read some books, like Daniels, and its written that lactate threshold usually are longer duration.
Even so, the video title says its lactate training.
So im kinda lost .
Can lactate exercises be done in small (3min) reps?
Thanks :)
May god bless you, Sage!
Tempo runs are longer (I usually do them for 20 mins or 3 miles) but you can do threshold in shorter intervals yeah
Vo2maxProductions thank you, Sage!
Its always good to learn some more!
Ill look for “cruise intervals”!
TY!
Seemed hard for LT
it was slightly...that's why I said Critical Velocity in the video also...something I used to call "Pre-Vo2max".
Gotcha

Porque 10x1000 tem que ser raramente.
Pois é muito difícil fazer esse treino

What is your goal for Rotterdam?
Did 8 200s today all sub 30 from 27-29 with about a minute and a half break. Then strides. All after upper body day in the gym
I prefer tempo runs over track style workouts.... i still do both though. fml.
