Hey Pete, don’t get the Poison appeal either however I have a new respect for Brett Michael. A good friend of mine has a young son who is heavy into music. The young man suffers from some type of condition that causes seizures. Several years ago he went to see poison and unfortunately had a seizure either on his way to the show or shortly after arriving, not sure which. Because of the seizure he was unable to see the show. He emailed Brett Michael and told him what happened. Brett actually responded, told him he was sorry that happened to him and promised when the band came back to town he would send him and his family tickets and bring them backstage after the show. He made good on his promise, sent them tickets and hung out with them after the show fir a couple hours, apparently he was very friendly and really seemed interested in the young man, made him and his family feel very welcome. Kinda cool.
it may be (partly) because bret is a diabetic and understands and / or sympathizes with others with health issues. he's known to "go to bat" for his fans, and though i wouldn't call myself a fan...you gotta admit he's a stand up guy.
I actually have always loved the Anthrax logo. Back in junior high, it was the easiest the write on my book covers besides Slayer. That "A" with the 90 degree angle instantly makes me think of them.
Enjoyed this. You guys concentrated a lot on the lettering of a logo. True, often a logo is just the lettering. In other cases, band identity seems to be a combination of the lettering style and symbols. For instance, with Queensryche, I think many identify that band strongly by their Tri-Ryche symbol, which is iconic, appearing almost to be a batman on steroids symbol - even more than their lettering. I think Toto is similar; their lettering itself doesn't impress, but it does fit in with the more striking sword+circle(s) imagery which almost represents a logo.
@Martin Popoff How about "The Signature that Devalued the Album"! Or is it possible for a disgraced member to negatively impact a piece of merchandise.
I suspected that Martin used to work in printing before because of the way he gets annoyed by letter spacing and sizing and layout on the page. I know because my dad was a printer too and he notices all that stuff.
Dude. He’s been promoting nothing but his publications if you catch the end of the episodes and Pete’s asking him if there’s anything he’s got in the works. I own several books 📚 of his; my first one in’98 picking up The Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Bible from who it began with til up to where he’s left off. I love how anal he gets w/ every single act up until the release of the newest version of the topics he’s writing on. Even if he didn’t list my bands Sincerely yours, DJP ex PostMortem and Kilslug Boston Massachusetts USA 🇨🇳 Amerikkka..naturally 5/29
I commented on a previous video about TOTO. I absolutely love their use of the sword and the circle which they have featured on several of their albums. They also have many cool album covers. However, I agree with you on the logo itself. Their logo has also been quite inconsistent and they have changed it several times, depending on the album. Currently, they're using the same font/logo that is on the Fahrenheit album cover.
When I saw the title of this show, I went trough my collection A-Z and you guys got all of them. Pete, your face when you said "Poison,, ugh !" Priceless ! Made me laugh out loud. Great video.
Logos like "Anthrax" Are what we would call "Electrician Tape Logos": The kind that you would layout with a ruler on a bass drum head and then use tape instead of paint.
I think logos should first and foremost be recognizable and unique (like Maiden, Def Leppard ...). Only in the second place they should "look good" - and this is to a great extant a question of taste. Some of the logos presented here aren''t bad TMO. The Gillan signature is much better than the boring black on white writing on the Japanese album version.
When Martin showed the CD’s of the Tank box set, my OCD went CRAZY! Please for the love of humanity, please rearrange. 😂😂 I agree with most of those picks, except Magnum, I always liked that lettering. I love the new lettering too and Dio. The Dio lettering is brilliant. The version on Dream Evil is a bit pants though. I hate the Ghost logo and it’s not the inverted cross that bothers me. It’s the ‘G’ at the beginning. You can’t tell it’s a G. When I wear one of my many ghost t shirts out, randoms will say ‘what’s that written on your shirt, ‘Shost?’ And it pisses me off. 😂😂 On the subject of Gillan t shirts, in 1993 a random stranger in a rock bar I frequented back in the day liked my led zeppelin t shirt and I liked his Gillan Glory road 1980 tour t shirt. We decided to swap then and there right in the bar. They were the crazy days.
Yup....LOVE the Saga logo. No issues with it whatsoever. I love how Queensryche used the twin winged symbol. That is bad ass!! The name itself was just alright. The Scorpions logo is amazing. DIO??? Sorry....NOTHING looks better on a t-shirt than that DIO logo!

For a band that puts so much effort into packaging their music and does some very unique and interesting things with it, I've always thought Tool's text logos are pretty underwhelming.
@@melprophet1936 It's not bad, just the weakest thing they've done, it wasn't deserving of the hype. I think most were just happy to have an album but the 10+ minutes thing wasn't necessary considering where those songs go. Popoff and Pardo at it again on band logos not liked so much. Great discussion as always but particularly highlighted by Martin's comment on the Derringer logo and Pete briefly channeling Bell Biv Devoe to sing a line about one of his least favorite bands. Great laughs there. Thanks, gents, for another outstanding show and congrats to Martin on the 100th episode of his podcast as it was a great listen.
Great episode with the two of you as always. I'm not sure Magnum gonna keep having the latest logo on every album. It seems they have a few logos that they alternate between.
If I only saw the lists of the logos mentioned in these videos (favorite / least favorite logos) I would honestly have no clue which is which. Super surprised not to see AC/DC, Metallica or the original Rush logo on the favorite ones. Magnum never really had one logo , each album seems slightly different from block to the elaborate, think the first one that had a sword through the M was Chase the Dragon . Always liked the Tygers of Pan Tang one thoughand that they stuck with it makes it instantly recognisable.
All caps gothic letters, 3d-letters, gradient letters, objects that substitute a letter in the middle of the name... There are some expedients that maybe should be prohibited to be used in a logo.
Like I said last time: you should have done one on band fonts and one on logos. Case and point: Queensryche. They have never had the same band font for any album, but they have had the tri-ryche logo on every album since Rage for Order. (Their 3rd). And yet you were putting down their font correct? No mention of the consistency of the LOGO. Which is easily one of the most recognizable in rock. Sheeeesh.
How come no one has mentioned the eagles logo that great electrified lettering combined with the eagles skull looks great on a t shirt great logo from a brilliant band
Any of those undecipherable black metal, grindcore and death metal logos would suffice for this category. Give a kindergarten kid a pencil, have him doodle a bunch of nonsense and squiggly lines on a piece of paper, and you've got yourself a black metal logo!
Def Leppard is a dumb band name but their logo has become iconic. I like the triangle version. I don't like much of their music after Hysteria. High n Dry and Pyromania are great albums IMO.
I have an idea, how about best band "symbols" like Van Halen's "VH" or Rolling Stones' Lips & tongue, or Wasted Youth's "WY", or Dead Kennedy's "DK", ELO, REO, Einstürzende Neubauten's human stick figure..................

It reminded me also of Back to the Future
Brilliant by Martin : "Derringer logo like a country music belt buckle. "
Always good to hear Martin's Tales From Typographic Oceans.
Another great episode with Martin guesting. Love these episodes with Pete and Martin, always amusing and fun with some great anecdotes.
I used to draw that DIO logo everywhere at youngster and teenager 😅 My schoolbooks etc and even on the wall somewhere with huge letters.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the Dio logo.
Especially since when you then it upside down it says Devil.
I had absolutely no problem drawing the DIO logo on many items as a youth. Still love it today, and fits the true nature of Ronnie’s music!!
110% Agree. It's a classic, awesome metal logo.
The Piper logo looks like the sign for a strip club circa 1970's.
And why have a second Piper text just below ?
I actually have always loved the Anthrax logo. Back in junior high, it was the easiest the write on my book covers besides Slayer. That "A" with the 90 degree angle instantly makes me think of them.
I did draw the DIO-logo on my schoolbag :-) It came out fine and the logo personifies the music io.

@Martin Popoff How about "The Signature that Devalued the Album"! Or is it possible for a disgraced member to negatively impact a piece of merchandise.

that magnum logo that you think is better was first used on the the chase the dragon & invasion live album
I don't think it's that terrible..... it looks like a crossover between a metal and neo-prog logo :D which is kinda cool

The DIO logo upside down spells DEVIL. It’s actually pretty cool. Also, the TESLA logo with the lightning bolts around it is pretty sweet. Good show.
As a graphic designer, Martin’s imagined Yngwie design demand gave me PTSD!
Tygers of Pan Tang get their name from the science fantasy books by Michael Moorcock, the same guy who worked with Hawkwind.
Love the story of Martin's Scorpions window letters! I just used Matthias Jabs centerfold posters in my room. :)

I love the Anthrax logo.
Sheeeesh.
Dark Tranquility logo on the thumbnail really looks indolent and careless.
How come no one has mentioned the eagles logo that great electrified lettering combined with the eagles skull looks great on a t shirt great logo from a brilliant band
Great logo, overrated band.
26:23 with a little tweaking i can easily see that logo turning into a shark. Missed opportunities i guess.
Call me crazy, but I like Scorpions, Dio, Epica, and Toto logos.
I have an idea, how about best band "symbols" like Van Halen's "VH" or Rolling Stones' Lips & tongue, or Wasted Youth's "WY", or Dead Kennedy's "DK", ELO, REO, Einstürzende Neubauten's human stick figure..................
