- Past FX Elastic Mattress, TDY, Patriarch
Past FX offer a wide range of pedals familiar to David Gilmour fans. Among their Spectrum Collection, I'm looking into the Patriarch early 90s Civil War era Big Muff and the TDY based on the recent version of the Tube Driver as well as the Elastic Mattress based on the mid 70s Electric Mistress flanger.

Its sad to see the end of Buffalo FX....!!
man, when you kicked into that Patriarch there's that tubular sound that we all love so much. Both drive pedals have bite and aggressiveness but have round edges (if that makes sense). Just really pleasing to the ear. AWESOME Demo!
Thank you!
@@gilmourishofficialwhen you kicked in the Patriarch was there some rotary or flanger too? It sound like
What is the chord progression of the backing track that was playing when you were playing?
Thanks Björn, what happened to Buffalo FX ?
They went out of business. I don't know the story. Past FX makes excellent replicas.
What I love in these good quality clone pedals is the addressment of the original pedals problems and the missing adjustments that sometimes the “mods” tries to give. Amazing demo as always, great and inspirational playing, please keep rockin’.
Thank you! Steve at Buffalo did an amazing job making great clones, with many improvements over the originals. Past FX has, IMO, done justice to Steves pedals and on some of them improved even more.
I loved the demo track. That flanger is incredible sounding. Well done sir.
Thanks!
Canot speak about the pedals....but I can tell I love and vote for Bjõrn 😜🥰
Thank you!
Wonderful, wonderful. Oh god when you kicked into the Patriarch...wow a sound. So comfortable. I will learn this improvisation. I absolutely loved it.
Thank you!
Verlie is the best customer service person ever.
That certainly wasn't my experience. I'll never buy a PastFX again
Verlie kicks ass, I just got the new version of their Power Booster (it’s a sweet pedal btw), and every email with questions I had was answered back in like 15 minutes.
@@salg1386care to elaborate instead of just saying it was bad
@splitzerx570 Sure. I bought V3 Elastic Mattress and the stereo is out of phase. I asked her about it and she said to buy another pedal (she even sent a link to it) to correct it, then she tried to lie about that she didn't tell me to buy something else. Then she said it was a misunderstanding because of a language barrier, she thought I didn't understand English because of my name. So she's a damn racist too.
@@salg1386 the hell, that’s pretty stupid. Every single other encounter with them I’ve heard has been good…
Unfortunate
I hope someone does a Flanger comparison with: the Elastic Mattress, The New brighter Retro Sonic and the Mooer E-Lady.
I the Elastic Mattress V3 and the brighter Retro-Sonic, and the Retro-Sonic is just sounds better. The EM cuts off too much low end and is brittle on the top end. The Retro-sonic is much more musical sounding
Tried all 3, I honestly prefer the Mooer as its gets me: Andy Summers, David Gilmour and Van Halen-territory. @@salg1386
@@salg1386 I tried the Retro ( with my gear ) my Mooer Sounded warmer, fuller. I can get Gilmour, Summers & Van Halen-ish - so i'm good.
Do you know how the PastFX Reticon compares to the Elastic Mattress?
I’ve still got my TD-X it’s a great pedal.
One of my favorite posts of yours. Thanks for posting these pedals and your awesome backing tracks 🤙🎸
Thank you!
Pleasure listening to you play Bjorn, amazing video as always.
Thank you!
PastFX pedals are absolutely great. Got 3 of them
Getting that Jar of Flies feel brother ! Sounds amazing , blackstar cab is huge
Never cease to hit THAT spot...!
Thanks man😎👍
😎👍❤🖖
Thank you!
The sounds like something just get burning on that room!🔥
This was an excellent video and great playing. I was wondering what where your thoughts on the new JHS 3 series pedals and laney super cub for getting David’s tone
Thank you! I haven't tried the JHS 3s so I can't tell but I use a bunch of their other pedals so I would imagine that they're great. The Cub has been one of my favourite practice amps for years.
👍🏿🤘Thanks Bjorn, great demo. The Electric Mattress seems to take dirt extremely well.
Yes, very well!
Would an ODR-1 / ODR-C (nordland) overlap with the TD-Y? They seem like a similar OD style.
Absolutely, it has a darker top end and a tad bit more mids compared to the Tube Driver but it’s very close.
Great review as always! With the demo of the patriarch, what other effects were you running there? Electric mistress there as well?
Thanks! Yes and a bit of delay.
Hello, Bjorn! Thank you all the work you’ve put into these video reviews. You are truly a talented artist!!! I am curious if you remember the Blackout Effectors Musket and whether you might draw any comparisons between the Patriarch and the Musket from memory?
Thank you! The Musket is a bit more modern sounding I guess, with more features and an overall more hi-fi sound… if that makes sense. The Patriarch is very close to the early 90s Sovtek Muff, with a lot of low end, gain and texture.
Amazing and insightful as always Bjørn!
Thanks!
Hi Bjorn.. Will the TD-Y, version 2 go well with a Vox amp as it has a mids knob as well?
Yes
Cool pedals & music. Can’t see if they make a Univibe.
What’s the intro song and the backing track song? @gilmourish
Both are short pieces I recorded 😉
Sounds great as usual Bjorn!
Keith
Thanks Keith!
Hey Bjorn :) love your demos.
Have you tried pastfx m-1-a? How did you find it in comparison to the patriarch? Thanks!
Thanks! It's based on the Ram's Head boosted with a Power Boost like David often did in the late 70s. Smooth and bright. The Patriarch is based on the early 90s Civil War era Sovtek Big Muff, which has a bit more mids, low end and an overall less aggressive tone.
@@gilmourishofficial thanks for the answer!!
This I know, was wondering how much you liked it :) in videos I feel the m1a sounds cleaner and stronger, but I didn't try neither in person.
Elastic mattress vs mooer elec lady, which one is closer to nailing those late 70s/final cut tones?
Check out the Doublemoon from Mad Professor.
The Mattress is based on the 76 Mistress, while the Mooer on the Deluxe. Two very different sounding pedals.
@@gilmourishofficial and... Which one nails the tone better?
Bjorn,
Around 5:23 mark is the Patriarch. Is that incredible tone and feel all three pedals, or just the Patriarch? Really loving your videos, research, playing, everything. Thanks!!!
Thank you! That's the Patriarch and Elastic Mattress.
@@gilmourishofficial Thanks for replying. You are one of the very, very few, people that really nail the tone and feel. When you adjusted the Mids at 5:30, it was simply amazing.
Would I need a Colorsound clone as well as a Patriarch and Mattress?
Doing tons of research and trying to choose between a Vick Audio Overdriver or PastFx TD-Y. Would that add a lot to the Patriarch? PastFx and every company you do videos for should pay you royalties!
I love the Final Cut tones the best.
Love your videos!!!!!!! The playing, the tone!!!!
Thank you!
Excellent review and playing, have you ever had any word from the main man himself? It'd be expected at this stage considering the amount of hours and effort you put into providing the listener/ guitar fanatic an excellent insight into Gilmour, his equipment and play style etc.
Thank you! No, I'm sure he has better things to do :)
Would love to see you review the Past FX Reticon Flanger.
Would love to see the comparison to the Elastic Mattress too. I have a Reticon Past FX but they're super rare so I'm not letting go. Curious how they compare
Chris K I have one as well and I’m definitely not letting mine go either. I’d love to see a shootout between those two.
Great playing and tone!
Thank you!
Well done Bjorn. Your tone is always spot on!
Thanks!
I have all three 🤣🤪; bought the E-Lady first, for my small, travel board, then the Retro Sonic 2nd version (1st was brighter), then after comparing w/a friend’s Past FX, bought the Past FX. Flange is tricky, but these are all a lot easier for me to dial in than the old Boss Flanger (still have that one too 🤣🤪).
That patriarch sounds exactly like the sound I didn’t know existed or what to call it, guess it’s “throaty!”
Love these tones
Amazing. Kisses from Brazil!
Thank you!
Love these videos. Great sounds!
Thanks!
Hello...Among the Buffalo tdx pedals...Vick audio Tree of life...and pastfx td-y offer more legitimate DG overdrive tones?
All of them. Buffalo is out of business though.
Hi Bjorn, Have you compared these to your Buffalo FX pedals?
Close but not identical. The Patriarch is perhaps a tad brighter and the low cut seem to cut more, which adds more presence. The TDY is very good. Slightly more scooped and compressed compared to the TDX. Right now I’m preferring the TDY for it’s response to my picking.
@@gilmourishofficial ah allright, thanks for the insights. Much apreciated Bjorn! And nice job, as always!
Really love your playing here Bjørn! 😊 😊
Thank you!
I'm going to order an EM as soon as one is available.
Regarding the Patriarch, how does it compare to the Electro-Harmonix 70s Muff?
I'm looking for a big muff clone to get the Time solo tones, as well as Comfortably Numb.
Thanks.
The Patriarc is based on the early 70s Sovtek Big Muffs, with a bit warmer character and more mid range compared to the 70s models.
Fine toner og riktig stemning der, Bjørn. Driftet bort til et bedre sted der et øyeblikk🌺🌑
Takk!
Love the PastFX stuff. Verlie is a cool gal too!
Smooooooooooooth as silk. Nice
Thanks!
Nydelige tones, nydelig spilt!
@@gilmourishofficial Mange takk!
Bjorn, I really love and rely on your reviews and tips in my pursuit of the Gilmour sound. Thank you! I am not sure if you have heard of the line of pedals from Luca Columbo out of Milan Italy? Columbo Audio Electronics. I find these to be unique and very cleverly designed. Luca is a great person to work with, and his pedals are all hand-made 1×1 per order. The "Bricks" pedal is a fav of mine and is a combination Power Booster / Big Muff / Tube Screamer and more. The Pulse Driver is a Tube Driver type without the tube but has a switch for 12ax7, 12at7, and 12au7. They are a little more expensive, but considering they are handmade, unique designs, they are totally worth it. The build time is about 4 to 6 weeks currently.
I would love for you to try these out and review them. If you contact Luca Columbo, he is very responsive.
Thanks for the tip!
Again, excellent !
Thank you!
They realy looks like Buffalo's ! ... ?
Yes, they clearly state on their site that these are clones or base on the Buffalo pedals.
Sounds great
Thank you!
Excellent coverage of these pedals !! You mentioned that your neck pickup is Seymour Duncan? Was this the one used by Mr. Gilmour ? Also, what neck is on your Strat?
The bridge pickup is a Seymour Duncan SSL5m which is the same as David's using - both on the original Black Strat and the Fender Signature guitar. The neck is a 65 reissue Japanese. Same as the Eric Johnson signature. Check out my guitar here ruclips.net/video/txZXa8y-plY/видео.html
Hey Bjorn, great tones...Is that patriarch being ran alone or are you running the past fx pedals with is for that tone?
I've added the Elastic Matress for some flanger tones.
Curious to get your take on the new Line 6 DL4-mkII. Seems like it could cover a lot of ground for David Gilmour fans.
Yes, I've been using the POD and DL4 for years in my studio for those delay sounds. Looking forward to try the MkII.
Hello what do you think of the skreddy lunar module deluxe, have you checked it out. All the very best to you
It's been some time since I tried it but it's based on David's Dark Side of the Moon fuzz tones. Similar to the Fuzz Face but more saturated and aggressive.
do you have a noise gate or something keeping the noise out when you put space between notes?
No. I'm playing fairly loud but I manage to handle the noise by keeping the distortion down, turning away from the amp and using my palm to mute the strings when needed.
This track sounds amazing. I gotta learn it.
Thank you!
Question, TD-Y or BK Butler ?
In my experience the Tube Driver is more responsive. Much like a tube amp. The TDY is easier to set up though. Fits a wider range of amps.
@@gilmourishofficial thank you. I’m looking at getting a Roland JC 40 because I can use headphones and from what I understand, takes pedals well. I like the idea of the Butler because it’s a tube overdrive and would warm the sound. If you have any other advice on this, would be greatly appreciated.
Paul
TD-Y or BD2 ?
They're both similar and not - each with unique tonal qualities. I've been using both for years and I can't really say which is better.
The crook from buffalo FX went out in bad style
What happened? I had nothing but great service from Steve.
Google good sir - Google
I must say that Steve has always been polite, helpful and good to me. I had the honour of being a small part of developing and testing some of his pedals and I still use many of them. As far as I know, we do not know what happened to him. I can not speak for others experience.
they are clone of Buffalo FX? IMHO they have similar name, paint style, etc
Yes they are. Not the electric mattress clone of the EHX
No they’re not clones actually. Verlie used the original Buffalo circuits as a base and made her own adjustments and improvements, often with added features and range. They are very close and usually the OG Buffalo tones are available at certain settings (eg a switch turns it back to Buffalo mode).
Pretty blatant Buffalo FX styling
That's kind of the point.
@@gilmourishofficial I get everything is a clone these days, just seems a little dirty
@@asc95 Not at all. Firstly, Buffalo’s pedals are obvious clones with mods of other pedal makers; are you calling Buffalo dirty too? Secondly, PastFX had their own line of retro pedals and were not ripping off Buffalo or even aware of them. After Buffalo collapsed leaving quite a few customers out of pocket, many pedal enthusiasts contacted PastFX thinking they might be BuffaloFX moved down under (they aren’t) and/or were asking if they could make more of the Buffalo pedals again (which they did with even more improvements btw) since they were no longer available except for high prices on the collector market. PastFX are completely up front about all this on their site and also are a small outfit with excellent customer responsiveness. Would you prefer that these pedals were no longer available at all?
@@JPMonstie I said style, relax
Well, it is well known that some of the Buffalo FX pedals are closely derived from Pete Cornish´s pedals (apart from the footswitch). At one point, Buffalo even did a run of pedals with the same black/white color scheme (styling) as the Cornish Deluxe Series. Those were quickly retracted - possibly due to fire from Mr Cornish.
Good! What is the difference between the Elastic Mattress and the Reticon Flanger from Past FX from a tone perspective?
I haven’t tried the Reticon yet so I can’t tell.
@@gilmourishofficialHar du lyst til å låne en Reticon Flanger for å lage en review? Things can be arranged! 😊
