- When Alfredo Di Stefano retired at the age of 40, a special farewell match was arranged in Madrid for June 7, 1967 - and it was the newly crowned European Champions who provided the opposition.
Jock Stein took his triumphant Celtic side to Madrid to pay tribute to a great footballer. However, it was a diminutive genius in green and white Hoops who stole the show.
Jimmy Johnstone put on a breathtaking performance that had the Spanish crowd chanting ‘Ole! Ole!’ every time he touched the ball, and the Madrid players were reluctant to go near him in the second-half. Afterwards, Di Stefano sought Jinky out for a special photograph.
Celtic won 1-0 thanks to a Bobby Lennox goal. It may well have been Di Stefano’s night, but it was definitely Jinky’s game.
Celtic’s season that began with a 4-1 win over Manchester United finished with a 1-0 win over Real Madrid - and the Hoops won all FIVE of the trophies they played for in between those games.
So it’s little wonder that the Real master chose Celtic and that run of success also partly explains why the Hoops won the game as 120,000 Spaniards look on.
Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane, Platini, Ronaldo and Messi arguably top list of the greatest players ever, but one man who deserves to be mentioned with these greats is Alfredo Di Stefano.

Some beautiful football. What a team.
The great Bob Crampsey commentating
That Celtic team led by the great Jock Stein really were the best team in World football at that time, total football long before total football was a saying.
Yes I agree, for a very brief period in 1967 we were at the pinnacle
Celtic made Madrid look like 3rd division amateurs and played them off the park. Jinky teaching them a footballing masterclass and running rings around them.
lennon miller and big bair from motherwell please 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Jimmy 'Jinky' Johnstone was plugged into the mains that night - Never seen such an individual performance of that calibre from any so-called more recent, football (alleged) 'genius'...
And the other 10 men in The Hoops weren't too shabby, either... What an era it was to be a child growing up nr. the shipyards w/ that team to support @ the old Parkhead along w/ ma' late Uncle & dear Father (God bless them...) - an auld yin in Japan x #COYBIG Hail Hail!!
Sign of a great team: the highlights package makes it look like we have a bout 30 players on the pitch at any given time. On it like white on rice. That Jinky, man. Wow. HH
Hail Hail the Celtic 📢🇮🇳🫶👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍😄👌
Jinky 💚🙏
It’s hilarious to think that Real Madrid are the underdogs in this game 😆
💚🤍💚🤍💚🤍💚🤍
How good was that Celtic team.we ll never see their likes again.
The greatest team that ever played the game of football
When the whole stadium stood up and waved their white hankies in respect to Celtic's greatest ever player Jinky HH 🍀⭐🇮🇪
Different class 🍀🍀
Olé! 🍀
Marvavilloso 🥳
Wee jinky ran riot that night Madrid couldn't handle him ,Tommy gemmall had great power in both feet
So Nice to see Classic Matches
Is it fair to say that for a very brief period around the summer of 1967, Celtic were the best team in the world ?
Yes, until we unfortunately got knocked out by Dynamo Kiev in the first round in 67-68.
Messi who ? Wee Jimmy took the piss out of Real. How strange it must be for younger Celtic supporters to see clips of a time when celtic were kings of Europe and when great sides such a Madrid and Barcelona were not fit to lace their boots.
How we wish those good times could come again. Probably never will.
A different world now.
I have never watched this game, but even in brief highlights of a testimonial match that Celtic side looked so good! Jimmy Johnstone turning it on not a player on the pitch laid a glove on him! Hail hail 🍀 💚
Ceaser looking like a God magnificent
