      Calling something studio monitor, doesn't mean it measures flat man. Neither sonos or JBL or yamaha hs etc are fla. Most hi fi speakers don't measure. Again even using klippel etc doesn't mean a damn thing. Physics, sounds wave, fourrier transformation means that space reflections and absorptions mean more than the speaker itself.
      As many here I have some hi fi experience and I don't care if something is flat when you put a sinewave sweep and measure it to be enjoyable.
      But as someone that mixes and not only produces but writes and plays his instruments, and electric guitar is the one all be all to get wrong on speakers with crossovers at around 2-3khz (...the whole lot of them) the edifiers are no worse neither better than anything out there. What they cannot do is surpass their power, amp and size. Don't expect to judge bass on their own.
      For the rest of the frequency spectrum and as long as you can double check your work in target systems and adjust accordingly they will do the job. But they are still quiet, 4 inchers with a good tweeter for desktop use.
      What they do beyond their price target is imaging. They image better than hi fi speakers costing...hundreds or even thousands more. As long as you are in front of them, for desktop use they almost sculpt a 3-d sound field and details are very accurately positioned. What more can you ask. They cost at around 80 euros nowadays.
      Shittier speakers with monitor tags cost more sometimes. Every company has its own philosophy and I guess by their standards they are correct...but those edifiers are very good for the price.

    Yeah, I see Edifier speakers as low to lower mid range computer speakers. They also beat a lot of sound bars, especially ones without subs and are a lot better than many single unit Bluetooth speakers. Definitely not close to professional monitors but a step up from single driver 1 way speakers and provide a pretty good sound for the price.
    Personally I'd get some KEF's and a Yamaha amp on the used market and get some really good sound for not much more.

      Bad for you. Cause Edifier speakers is a proper bookshelf active speakers (not those plastic crap without tweeters like Logitech or something - which made only for playing system sounds, not for music. "boop boop, beep beep").
      Talking about monitors - come on, man. MR4 is entry level home studio monitors, such as those from Mackie and Presonus Eris. And MR4 competes with them without hesitation. No one is saying that this is super professional studio monitors and a Barefoot/Adam/KRK/Kali killer.

    I've had these for 2 weeks now and after getting a set of small speaker risers they came to life. Flat on a desktop, the bass was going right past me but bringing them up to about ear level with a small degree pitch it absolutely made all the difference in the world. When I was younger there was no such thing as narrow field speakers or monitors, at least not widely available to the general public. So this was my first introduction to them. I use them as studio monitors for recording guitar and as my computer monitors and they work and sound 2x their cost, easily. It gives me a very manageable balance for both purposes without having to sacrifice anything between the two. Just the right amount of bass response for recording to my DAW also! Much better balance with TRS cables too!

  • @WMRhapsodies
    @WMRhapsodies Год назад +2

    I'm using these as monitors-I'm just an amateur musician, ok, but I can tell you that my current setup with MR4 + Eris subwoofer is way way better than my old Tascam 5" 2.1 system, which was a lot more expensive at the moment, and supposedly a lot more "professional" (and big and heavy and inefficient, too). Not to mention the Samson Mediaone BT4 pair I also own, which still are being sold at around 165 €, which sound nice, but much less controlled and much less balanced than the Edifier.
    I'm really blown away by the quality of the MR4. I'm spending hours on listening to very well known music-and enjoying it like if it was new!...and also listening to my own productions and understanding much better than before what is wrong about them. And the only thing I could miss is the bottom end I'm getting with the Presonus sub.
    I think there are things that a frequency test do not show. Like how, when placed correctly (and that is not too close, let them breath!), these very inexpensive speakers give an amazing stereo image and an incredible amount of detail, while preserving the overall character of the recording. A tad too bright to be perfectly flat?...that was in fact my impression, but they also sound to me pretty much like the Tin Audio T2 IEMs or the Sennheiser 650s headphones I've been using lately, both praised (or detested) for its neutral, analytical, balanced presentation. I was in fact listening to an old BSO by Michael Nyman (digitally remastered, mm...) and thinking It sounded like crap on the MR4s. Guess what, it sounded exactly as crappy in the Sennheiser cans.
    Other than that, good for (competitive) gaming? Sure!, a good stereo image and detail and not too much bass is exactly what you want. Good as general purpose PC speakers? They got the quality you may want indeed, but I would look for a more gentle, HiFi sound signature. Good for a Tv set? No, they are not that loud, and they have this somewhat narrow sweet spot which was presented in this review as a disadvantage, and in fact it is for general uses, but pretty much the contrary when used for what they are intended.
    And well, I'm still tempted to go for the Adam TV5s as my main monitors, but I'm not that sure they will be really much better. Call me crazy.

    • @WMRhapsodies
      @WMRhapsodies Год назад

      @Košičan z Košíc Yep, those. I never liked them much, really. But these days I'm using the MR4 to monitor piano and synthesizers and getting some pretty bad resonances (on piano sounds, the E4 key makes the passive speaker buzz like crazy...). That was never a problem with the Tascam, since they are way more powerful and heavy. I have to say I need the MR4 to be set at max volume since I'm in a medium sized room, and I may be asking too much of them. As a secondary monitor set (or multimedia/video monitoring) I still think they'r brilliant, and I'm pretty sure you will enjoy them.

    • @WMRhapsodies
      @WMRhapsodies Год назад +2

      @@marcosseno Studio subwoofers like the Eris have inputs and outputs (plus filters, so you can set which range of frequencies the sub handles and which the speakers), so you don't need the speakers to have a dedicated output ( Edifier has also a standalone sub with also has inputs, outputs and a filter), You connect your soundcard/computer/whatever source first to the sub, and then the output from the sub to the speakers, either with balanced 8" jack cables or RCA.

    A sub isn't necessary for music production. Yes, its good to have for reference but you should be mixing and mastering bass in headphones or a VERY controlled room which most don't have. So nah, a sub isn't needed for that and is a nice-to-have.. especially if you aren't doing bass-intensive genre like hip hop. Also you can add a sub by going a different route/setup with MR4s, they just don't have a dedicated sub out.

    I have both the S1000DB and S1280DB. The 1280DBs are $99 to $129 depending on Sale, and beat out, hands down, any of those single bar Blue Tooth speakers or those cylinder speakers out there for casual listening. I use them with my Kindle when watching movies or video. The 1000DBs are a great music monitor in my office/gaming room. Are there better choices out there, yes, but they cost more money. Funny, I bought the 1000's first for my bedroom, but they are too big for that application as I wanted something small and unobtrusive in that situation. The 1280's are small, don't really notice them until I use them.
    Remember, with Blue Tooth, max out your source Volume and use the speakers to adjust listening volume for best results. Bluetooth removes information as you lower the volume, where as powered speakers or receivers/amps remove gain.

      I don't remember exactly, but I was just going based on what gave me the flattest response.

      You shouldn't because the response off-axis above or below the tweeter is worse than to either side of the speaker.

    Hi, I'm debating between 2 speakers. The Edifier 1280DB and the Edifier MR4. Only use it for a little bit of music, films etc.. It's a casual use. The 1280 are 95€ and the MR4 are 130€. Wich one should I get in your opinion? (I like the looks of both but If I had to choose I prefer the 1280DB)

      Hi, casual listener here. I made a bit research the last few days because I was deciding to upgrade from my Creative Gigaworks T20 II (from my perspective great speakers for their price) and I think if you want more bass and bluetooth, go R1280DB, plus sub-out R1280DBs, or more neutral and better sound quality MR4. There's also new R1380DB that got better tweeters from R1700BT. There's also the question what outputs you'll use so check that in these variants too.

      my two cents - Check "Edifier MR4 vs Edifier R1280DBs sound demo". Id say consider other Edifiers, 1280 are boomy: 1380DB - they are halfway between fun tuning of usual speakers and monitor flat precision. If u want it even cheaper, 1010BT, they are more sound neutral, but lack that punch. If u want sound fun wtih bit more details in the mids and stylish look, look up for some discounted 1700 BT(pr BTs. of u plan subwoofer later). But reason why MR4 wins over any of those is they can play mids very well, which is kinda impossible to find under 150 eur category.

      Nothing I would say is too disappointing considering the price for powered speakers. I just wished they did a better job with DSP because that doesn't add to the cost of manufacturing.

    • @joentell

      Correct. In monitor mode. You can still do a lot better if you can apply custom parametric EQ (PEQ).

    There's nothing better at that point price. Very nice clean soundstage and more 'realistic' than the super popular 1280. If you need BASS and feel like you need a SUB you look elsewhere, it's a different kind of product.

    • @joentell

      Affordable speakers are where I started and I will always make time to review some I think might be promising. People who are new to audio don't want to spend a lot, so I'm always trying to find the best bang for your buck. I'm still using the Monolith Encore speakers in my main home theater system and their bookshelf speakers are $260 a pair and I think they're awesome!
      Also, Edifier sells the most speakers on Amazon than any other company, and lots of well known companies sell on Amazon.
