Crap!!!! I totally didn't see the questions asked in the live stream. I apologize. Let me answer them here:
Q: @Lowtohigh: "Do you sell the speakers you review as well?"
A: Not unless it's one I bought myself. These were loaners so they'll go back. In the rare case a manufacturer sends me a speaker and just says "keep it", then I give it away to my Patrons. 🙂
Q: @ajc9988: "Why put a limiter over putting in a high pass to filter out the low end?"
A: No need to cut off the bass when the speakers are being listened to reasonable volumes. At higher volumes, the limiters are most likely used simply for warranty issues. If they let a customer have at it on a $130/pair of speakers then I can imagine many cases where they'll have customers complaining.
Thanks for watching. Sorry for missing ya'll's questions in the live stream.
    - Erin

Have been using these for few months and im pleasently suprised. For everyday use listening to music, watching youtube, playing games they do great job. Soundstage surprised me the most but as you said these have to be pointed at your ears so desktop speaker stands work really well. The volume control is probably the wors thing about these, the jumps in volume are big and its hard to andjust it perfectly. I plugged them to my ifi zen dac and control the volume with it. Overall great speaker for the price

Thank you for your work. I spent a lot of time sifting through information on budget monitors recently and decided that the MR4 will meet my own needs (adjusting levels of my own recordings) based on their capability and size. While used JBL 305's could be found for not much more money, the smaller size of the MR4 was a driving factor in my decision to try them.
A couple of concerns I've come across online while researching the MR4 monitors were:
    1) Some reviews mentioned issues about the volume jump between 3 and 4, and
    2) The ability to use a subwoofer
The easy answer I have to address those concerns is to use them in conjunction with an audio interface. I have my Solid State Logic SSL 2 on my desk, ready to use with these monitors using TRS cables. The monitor level on the audio interface should alleviate any sensitivity issues with the volume knob on the monitors. As for using a subwoofer, a subwoofer that has TRS INPUT and OUTPUT, such as the PreSonus Eris Sub 8, SHOULD work fine by running TRS from the audio interface to the subwoofer INPUT, and then TRS from the subwoofer OUTPUT to the monitor INPUT. I can't fully confirm this since I don't have a subwoofer, and I don't intend to add a subwoofer myself, but for someone who already has an audio interface, this would provide a pretty decent and compact budget 2.1 setup for well under $400.
The MR4 isn't here yet, but I suspect these budget monitors will be a bit more usable in conjunction with the audio interface.

I was able to hook up this old/shitty Logitech sub/speakers that I had in a box from a while back (Z323 SPEAKER SYSTEM WITH SUBWOOFER) to my Eris 3.5 (same style setup/plugs as the mr4). First time I tried it didnt work cuz I didnt know how to connect everything. But then like a month later I tried it again and got it working. It sounds alot better with a sub even tho this Logitech sub is old and kinda wack (it makes this rumble noise even at like half way cranked up on the back of the sub). I put the sub under my desk in the center of where my speakers are placed and cant hear this rumble this way even when fully cranked up on the back of the sub. How I connected it is I first connect the Logitech speakers into the sub (the Logitech speakers need to be plugged in/working in order for the sub to work with Eris 3.5). Then the Logitech speakers headphone wire plugs into the laptop headphone jack. Then the rca cables that came with the Eris 3.5 plug into the back of the sub (aux input) and that rca/headphone plugs into the Eris 3.5 aux plug in the front of the speaker. I turn the Eris volume knob all the way up and the Logitech speakers about half way. I also use these eq profiles I found on this forum site (google this "audio science review PreSonus Eris E3.5 Powered Monitor") to make the Eris 3.5 neutral/flat as possible. Its crazy how the stock tuning is when you see the graph compared to neutral tuning. I did further customize the eq to add some more bass and treble back into it. If you wanna eq them to flat you gonna need to download APO/Peace eq programs.

I would not waste my money on upgrades for something below $250-300, as the parts used often are 'not so great', especially active monitors. Maybe some extra Dacron (poly fill) out of old pillow, 2" fiberglass, but certainly not Dynamat, No Rez or other expensive products.

I think EAC and ASR has shown that "trust but verify" is a worse buying strategy in audio than "trust no one". That's still better than the current audiophile "I want to believe" consumer. One thing I'd like to see is whether heavily EQ'd products (like a Sonos One with Sub) do as well as most audiophile products at moderate volumes. Them having their own onsite anechoic chamber is promising. Still, trust no one.

Considering you can't get the Neumis in Europe, are these the best budget compact monitors for multimedia and ocasional work (I mean, among the well known alternatives in its price range)? My company provides some decent Beyerdynamic DT PRO headphones to check audio levels and loudness range when video editing so, I wouldn't use the monitors so much when working. Would the MR4 be a smart choice or should I just forget about using them at all for work and go straight for some desktop speakers for general multimedia use?

Hi Erin, just a couple of weeks ago I was deciding between these and the neumi BS5P and got the neumi because of your review, btw they come with port plugs already installed but personally I liked the sound better without the plugs (I needed more bass) but I could definitely hear the super smooth mids and highs with the plugs.

Same here... was thinking if these were better also. I am happy with neumi BS5P btw (Thanks to Erin). I also tried both plugs, but seems to sound better without (PC + MOTU M4). You're right, with plugs the bass levels out and mids/highs have more fidelity for sure. I just plug them for my Guitar setup, and unplugged for overall use. I'll be looking for monitors that sound just as good as neumi BS5P or better that eliminates the extra step(plug).

    • @pliedtka

What if you people try something like 3/4-1" thick foam in the ports so it leaks some bass. Had similar issue as my room is very resonate at the port frequencies, so I decided to attenuate its output some, but not to kill it with the full plug.

    • @zemi2750
      @zemi2750 2 года назад

@@pliedtka The foam i used was light, not dense (huge block of foam that you can mold to any shape without cutting it) Can't remember where I got it from, but I do know it was for car speakers cushioning. the bass is not entirely gone, it's quite beefy even pluged, but it loses a lot of fidelity for Music Instruments (not muddy sound but too much bass for Guitar recording/playing). I get what you're saying tho, it's a good solution, but for me the difference is too much to have it plugged for everything. Keep in mind, this apllies only if you're gonna use an instrument with neumi BS5P, or myb just Guitar. Doesn't help either that I have a Gibson, notorious for low end.

@@ErinsAudioCorner I am keeping the Edifier MR4s and sending back the Presonus Eris 3.5s for my small desktop monitors. I was looking for budget monitors for my office and these were intended to help do some light mixing for videos editing and music with a budget of $100 (I went above budget to get the MR4s and it was worth it) The new monitors would be an upgrade from a set of Bose Companion 2 Series 3 (used for $10) so you know where I am coming from. When I watched your Presonus vs Mackie video, it was a reality shock after I had ordered the Eris. It's tough to hear the truth, especially when everyone is recommending the Eris 3.5...including Wirecutter. At first, I thought you were being too critical because you have listened to and reviewed $400+ monitors. But you were being honest... I wouldn't have noticed the Eris's flaws, and smiley face response unless you pointed it in that way. Your review was the only negative review I saw out there and I couldn't listen to the Eris without thinking about the flaws. Without hearing your review, I probably would have just thought "Wow, these are punchy, and a bit harsh, but listen to the detail in the highs from compared to those old Boses!". I applied your recommended EQ to the Eris's, which made them more acceptable to listen to, but I knew the flaws would always be there unless I ran EQ ALL the time. The MR4s, right out of the box were exactly what I wanted.. much more pleasant to listen to and balanced. Turning them up I never got past 86 dB on my desktop, which was plenty loud for me. I am sure the Neumis would blow these away, but I just don't have the room in my small office. Hope the feedback helps. Thanks again, and keep up the good work Erin, I am sure your channel will gain traction soon.

After testing my new Edifier MR4, I hear a very slight noise that comes only from the tweeters of each speaker, it is like white noise or interference and it increases when the volume of the monitors is turned up. The sound does not come from the other connected devices, since the noise is heard even when I only have the monitors connected, without plugging anything else.
