      @@hassan31609 Meanings of words change as well. For example, in Pride & Prejudice 'condescend' is seen as a positive thing. Mr Collins is always talking about Lady Catherine's condescension, about how she gives favour to people not of her rank. (Talks to them, invites them to dinner, etc.) Today 'condescend' has negative connotations.

    • @jenniferpearce1052
      @jenniferpearce1052 4 года назад +18

      @@lovewalsall I think it had a negative connotation then as well. However, class separation was accepted then as it is not today, so condescension between classes was real. Nowadays, a person who is condescending is not only condescending but assuming superiority, so two "sins". At that time, it would only have been one, since her superiority of class was well acknowledged. However, Jane Austen's portrayal of her character shows that superiority of class does not equal superiority of character.

    Like many others, I found Karen Savage’s narration of P&P first, then moved on to Sense & Sensibility. Somewhere along the way I discovered her CV - when I realized she was from Texas I damn near fell off my chair. This woman deserves some kind of Award for her talents. She has a Masters degree in I.S., speaks French and Spanish fluently, and absolutely NAILED the accent on her Libra Vox Audiobooks, not to mention creating individual voices for all the characters. Thank you, Karen Savage, for sharing your talents with all of us, in bringing Jane Austen’s incomparable works to life. Bravo.

      And I wish she pronounced Marianne's name properly.
      It's Marry-anne
      Not Mary-anne
      Perhaps it is because she is American that she doesn't realise.
      Her British accent is excellent though.

    That first sentence is a gem! Full of alliteration and refracted light as read by Miss Savage. Amazingly beautiful English/ none of the harshness of its Germanic origin. Elegance on the page. A firm fan of the Brontes, finally I have found my particular Austen! Who says money never buys happiness? Stuff and nonsense, only someone who has never feared the specter of being ground to nothing by the rich and selfish - Austen must have had “ an excellent heart” to convey what the second sex must do to find and hold happiness without a trace of bitterness. I am giddy with excitement that this author speaks even to me, the daughter of a working class woman of both sense and sensibility at best rising to petit bourgeois but born not in mid 19th century Sussex - England but mid century in the Midwest - America. Literature elevates or levels all.

    Thank you Karen Savage! I love the way she narrates this story and brings it to life! In order to soak in and slow down the story I put the playback setting to .75 speed.

    Austen's style is underdeveloped here compared with her later works, but her understanding of character is unparalleled. When Willoughby complains about Brandon's extravagance and wealth early on, we don't yet understand his bitterness and fear concerning his own prospects, nor how it will guide his actions towards Marianne.

      @Susan Vail I really enjoyed it, but can't help feeling that Edward really didn't deserve Elinor in the end. I would have preferred seeing her end up with Brandon.

      That production is not a patch on the BBC version done a few years ago with Dan Stevens (Downton fame). So so much better! With Hattie Morahan and Charity Wakefield who were much nearer to the age of the characters in the book. Emma Thompson was nearer the age of the mother!!

      So many scenes and characters in the book aren't in the movie, or scenes from the book modified in some way for the movie that some detail missing, that people being graded on the book shouldn't rely on the movie alone.
