I'm trying to watch this without getting tears on my keyboard. Intellectually I know my life was made better for having heard Roy and this band numerous times. Emotionally I can't deal with Roy being gone. He was just too beautiful, and too young.
@@blackurbangardeningsociety3328 I still can't wrap my head around it. Too many wonderful memories of his gigs. I am thankful I spent time listening to him live as often as possible.
Jeff, my sentiments exactly!! This cat had so much promise, and in his prime, he was taken away from us. There are some beautiful young trumpeters on the scene; Wynton, Terrance Blanchard, Ryan Kisor, Harper, etc., Roy would have been in that group taking a back seat to no one. I pray he is at peace now. The only regret is that I never saw him live.
@@jamesgriffin1994 I saw Roy live too many times to count (and have recordings of many of those shows). He was a living breathing musician. Not to suggest the other cats you name are in any way "lesser" but Roy had a unique ability to play what the music was about, to get inside the melody. That's god-given.
Roy Hargrove has already cemented himself into the one of the greatest trumpeters to play category. He's constantly evolving without all the boundaries of what "jazz fans" expect. Yeah, I'm wearing my Nikes to match my freaking red bow tie WHAT!!! Lol...We don't have many guys TODAY playing at this level nor the appreciation for the legends that paved the way for him, so relax. He's so cool he took a step back to showcase a freaking trombone solo...WOW that's awesome! And of course his right hand man Justin still there by his side since the beginning. That shows us how he's no one of those egotistical cats that needs that stage. It kinda bothers me when people on this site critique the hell out of talented musicians when they can't even play a scale. Like grandma used to say if you don't have something good to say then don't say it at all. Love...
24:00- yeah Vincent Chandler!! Man Roy, you’re definitely missed by so many people who have performed with you for many years and who have looked up to you as an inspiration. Your spirit is in your music Roy, and we shall carry your legacy within our hearts, and in our minds forever!! 😎🎺
Hargrove has always been great, stretching the boundaries of music while always respecting the masters of the past. A great trumpeter, composer and artist, and yeah, cool tennies man...
I never really liked big band music until I watch Roy Hargrove Big Band perform at Atlanta Jazz Fest in Piedmont Park in 1993....wow that was a great night which I will never forget. (RIP kind sou)l.
SRV1 : That you you would pan this amazing , innovative band , because Roy Hargrove is wearing tennies and refer to preferring Doc Severinson and freaking Al Hirt ( Maynard was AMAZING . i agree ) ) , only serves to point out your bad taste and ears of STONE ...
Such a fine player RH, singer lady's a bit fierce looking, kind of belies the sweet sentiments in some of the lyrics. Anyone know what those extensions (or is is it just one of the no1?) on the flugel's valve blocks are?

Yes, I am just getting to the point that I can listen to Roy. He was a beautiful brother. I pray he is in peace.

@@jamesgriffin1994 Check out Maykel Gonzalez from Havana. He has Roy's ability to play any music from the inside. He's simply brilliant.
Roy Hargrove was Jon Baptiste's graduate school . Jon carries on the sound and spirit of Roy, now that he is a full Professor himself

Stupid mistake of the audio technician at 33:48. Missed Roy's beautiful solo start.

I'm not so sure (is the name of the song)
16:56 the “Roy lick”
He played so many astounding licks. It made him Roy Hargrove.
A big part of the sound, is the fact that the audio quality of the upload is really low
Didnt know jon batiste was part of roy's big band
Jon Batiste ! Baby!
