  • Can you still eat for £10 ($13) a week in 2023? I'm taking on the Emergency Extreme Budget Food Challenge! I have always wanted to do this budget challenge to push me out of my comfort zone and to see if I could learn anything from it as a fussy eater and someone who slips up on her budgeting from time to time. In this video (part 1) I will be sharing the budget food shop with prices. Prices correct at the time of recording July 2023.
For the extreme grocery challenge, the budget shopping haul will be for one person only, during the extreme grocery challenge I will allow myself some cupboard staples and limited caffeine (I need it, I have a sleepless 2yr old). I have decided not to buy reduced items or use free food apps, I wanted to see if I could buy a food shop with full priced items only during the cost of living crisis. During the challenge, I'll be cooking from scratch, trying out various recipes and foods to see how affordable and delicious they are. I hope you'll join me on this food challenge and see how I manage!

Being on universal credit £10 weekly budget is just standard. Saying that, as I am paid monthly I can get some things that can be made into meals and split into enough sometimes for 6 to 8 meals, for example I get a 2kg box of chicken thighs at £4 something, split it into two meals (curry and paprikash as an example) and that gives me 12 meals. Another favourite is good old mac and cheese, for the sake of some cheese, macaroni, butter, flour and milk, there is another 4-6 meals and I would of only just gone over the £10 budget for 16-18 meals but again this is from a budget of £40'ish for a month. Chickpea curry is a good call, love me some of that :)

@@abundantlythreesixfive1263 Thank you, having to survive one so little is damned annoying and youhave to re-think your whole approach to food. This can bring jmany issues to people who have been blasted with the rise in cost of living and trying to temper their views on food purchases and prep is a pain, like getting someone to swap chicken breast for thigh as for a little bit of knife work (which can be easily learnt from youtube, where I learnt to butcher a whole chicken) you can save £4 per kilo (sainsburys sells 1kg of breast for £6.49 (£6.49 per kilo) and 2kg of chicken thighs for £4.30 (£2.15 per kilo) plus if you freeze and save the skin, scraps and bones you get a lovely stock that can be reduced and frozen and used whenever just by adding it to boiling water or whatever you are cooking that needs stock.
I had the "advantage" of being homeless for 6 months and this gave me an appreciation for eating food I would previously turn my nose up at (cheese and onion pasty was one I woul dnever, and now still never, eat but it is amazing what a judicial blob of ketchup can do to chenge the palatability of food you hate lol). So even if I make a mistake and dislike somethign I eat, it is still edible and wont be wasted.
Currently the hardest thing I am finding atm is adjusting budgeting to allow for low carb stuff to try to improve my diabetes and finding affordable alternatives to staples is a major pain in the rear end, like using perarl barley instead of rice, and nothing has replaced my potaties as of yet, drinking and using thin white paint errrr i mean skimmed milk etc.
I wish I had the confidence to do youtube but I am too much of a wuss, I have thought of it before and have a million ideas from food of the rich/poor throughout history to complete meals from scratch like a full scottish breakfast or some others and of course cost of living meals being the main. Ohh well maybe one day lol Either way thank you for boosting my mood today, compliments can always go a long way :)

Nicer than skimmed milk, and half the price doing it that way.

I constantly set my weekly budget at £10 I have staples like salt, pepper, herbs and spices that I bought in bulk as far back as 2016. A large chicken lasts me at least 5 days and only costs me £4.25, 2.5 Kg of potato's, £1.25, last me a week 900g bag of peas cost 99p, a tin of pineapple slices £1.05, I also have a three monthly easiyo yoghurt subscription that costs me £54 but often miss a month out because the 20 packets I buy I have 20 packets left after the third delivery, that takes me over the £10 weekly budget by 65p.
I go to my local supermarket, Lidl, when they open on the 2nd of January and buy loads of reduced price meats, this year I got nearly £300, full price meats, for under £70 and my freezer was overfull with meat. I've still got about 30% of the meats I bought on the 2nd Jan left in the freezer.

@@lifelivinglite I took the same items as yours and priced for my area and here the items would cost $23.22 USD or 19 pounds. That's with picking the cheapest items and regular eggs vs free range eggs. The quality definitely would be lower. My area is a bit cheaper than other areas which can run up to 50% more expensive like in large northern, west and east coast states.
Also, in the US, many people got dropped off the food assistance program once the covid emergency order was canceled. In my state of Texas, 1 out of 6 children are hungry on a regular basis. We have free food banks but those are funded by private citizens or rely on grocery stores to donate older products before expiration. Some food banks the people have to go through a qualification process.

I was shocked at how cheap those pork sausages were, but then most of ours in the US are bigger in size and have a lot more pork. Those were a little over half pork, the rest was fillers. But still, prices here are scary expensive in comparison, which makes little sense to me as you would think a bigger country that produces more would have cheaper food…

@@francihenderson8526 Greed. The corporations are going to take as much as they can from consumers. People have started skipping meals.
It's rather hard to get a food assistance. For a single person you have to make around $17,000 a year which is a little over 13,000 pounds. The cheapest apartments run around $1,000 a month unless you live in a rural area.
My ex husband is on disability and he doesn't qualify for food assistance.I'd say overall we are on our own in the US. What add to the burden is our high expense of medical insurance and medical care. In my state 20% of the people have no health insurance. My daughter is a labor and delivery nurse and she gets patients who have never seen a doctor during their pregnancy.

It depends very much on what the average income is though, doesn’t it. You can’t compare food prices between countries without comparing the relative incomes involved. Whenever I’ve been to the USA I’ve been shocked at how comparatively cheap food is - although I appreciate that may have changed recently. I copied the below from Google. You can see that in the UK we have a lower average income than you do. So your prices might be higher, but you have more dollars to use.
‘What is the average salary in the UK and the US? The average salary in the US was around $58,260 in 2021. In the UK, the average salary was around $38,291 when converted to dollars.10 Jun 2023”
