How Much Did I Spend on Groceries? l Frugal Living UK
Curious about how much I spent on groceries in the UK for 1 month? I am sharing with you my shopping hauls and how much money I spent on groceries throughout the month of July 2024.
I'm trying to get back on track with my personal finances, budgeting while saving money and being more frugal in my habits, however my weak spot is food. Throughout July I tried to reduce my expenses and use up what I have already to hand in my freezer, fridge and cupboards (including household items). I have several times done almost exact shop comparrrisons (online orders) of my normal at the big 4 supermarkets and sainsburys has always beaten the others from a few quid to £15 so now i stick almost exclusively to sainsburys for my main shop with a mix of basic ranges, mid and a few named brands. The thing that makes me sad is that even before I get to food for myself my shop is already sitting at about £60 (includes the pet food) and wih being on UC I am left with about £60-£80 to get food and toiletries for a month so living on my own I have found the best way to survive is to cook a full recipe (so standard 4-6 servings) but choose recipes that freeze well which I guess is essentially batch/prep cooking. This is great but means that very often I have little for lunches and breakfast is a thing of the past until the freezer is full and then I can relax and have a few treats every few months lol

I cook for my husband and I, and I always tend to make an extra portion or two, which I box into a glass food box and pop into the freezer. On the days when he doesn't WFH, he takes the frozen box along and reheats it at work, saving us about 10€ (we are in Norway but easier to use the better-known currency than our tinymoney) per meal compared to if he'd have had to go eat at the cafeteria, even though it is subsidized for the academic staff at the university. Making and saving extra for another day when you may be ill and unable to cook is always better and cheaper than getting takeout!

I am really glad to have come across your video, because while I, too, am on a declutter/simplify/financial journey, I am also by no means a minimalist, and I love my knick-knacks. I feel like too many of this type of videos (decluttering and similar themes) often bind it up with minimalism and it's fantastically refreshing to see one that is so sane, practical and does not make a virtue of having less things, but rather is made from a standpoint of making one's life better. I hope you keep making these, and all the best!

Hi Natalie thanks for this! Very interesting! I have used Lidl before and shop with Ocado but I don’t think I’d use the cash back ones. I don’t like the idea that they have all my data and what I buy/spend. Earlier I heard someone talk about an App called biscuit that rewards you - with dog biscuits- that turn to vouchers. But to get this you have to put the microchip number of your dog in and they can track where you walk 😵‍💫. It’s like being spied on but with benefits. Anyway I’m not knocking people who enjoy them. Thanks as always for being lovely and putting out a great video. 😊

you made the challenge and you were honest- it was hard. Cooking with such a limited budget needs either time for experiments (which you did) or experience. If this would be your reality, u would have finished the week and in the nex week, adjusted. But: Less honest youtubers might have presented the rest of the meals in the video and secretly aborted, eating their usual meals. So - thank you for that. Great ideas! A meal plan for the month with flexibility built in is a great idea. It has saved me up to 60% on my food purchases. Where some flexibility comes in would be checking to see when your grocery has their mark downs and budget boxes, trying a few vegetarian soups or using meat as a condiment not the star of your meal. Having preplanned fun activities, a decluttering clean out and disposing of item at a boot sale or charity shop, learning a new skill or two to save you money. Instead of influencers who cost you money watch influencers on topics that save you money. Focus on ways that will promote your goal for saving. Everyday do something towards that goal and write it down. Try to develop new habits to save. It takes 2-3 weeks to develop new habits so you will stick to them. Observe everyday habits that cost you money or stress and think on ways a change your approach or mindset. If it’s paying off a bill make a chart and consider using the savings daily of weekly (vs monthly) to make the payments. Budget for daily spending/expenses and whatever you save make a payment towards your bill online, watching the amount owed go down while lowering the interest owed. Everyday think on things you have or do and be grateful. Look not higher but lower. By that I mean there are millions who would be grateful for a roof and 4 walls. Being able to sleep safely. They would be happy for 1 meal a day of the most basic foods much less 3 meals. Clean water. Cleansing their bodies and environments. The ability to walk safely through where they live even during the day. We take for granted so many things that others would be thrilled to have. Start there and be joyful and grateful for things others would consider the most wonderful luxuries.

Continuing on from "no spend January" ensuring frugal February keeps me focused on spending only on needs (rent, bills, basic food) and saving to replace home electricals. Not buying any electricals until I can pay in full with cash. It's Summer in Australia so lots of temptation to spend on entertainment! Good luck everyone in February 🎉

Yes. We are cutting our grocery budget by 2/3 for February. $400 down from $1200 for our family of 8.
