    Another fun one, thanks for bringing us along! Just FYI the water filter that froze is probably shot. I recently had to buy a new one for the same reason.

    • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, you saw the flow rate too, it was time for a new filter! I have tried cleaning the BeFree filters without much luck... let me know if you have any tips.

    • @RobParker8
      @RobParker8 2 года назад +2

      Hey Kevin, I hate that filter! I’d rather use a Katadyn pro pump filter but the Be Free filter is so light and small.
      Actually I’ve used every filter out there and I don’t really like any of them unless Chris is filtering my water or I have beer instead. 😁🍻

    • @Kevin-ib3io
      @Kevin-ib3io 2 года назад

      @@RobParker8 Ha! Thats a novel approach. I just need to convince a buddy to filter our water... or better yet carry our beer! Filters do suck, but I'll take that BeFree over my old pump any day. The flow rate was worse on it, if you can believe that. It took 20 mins to fill a nalgene.

    • @Kevin-ib3io
      @Kevin-ib3io 2 года назад

      @@pnwbikepacking I've found that if you put some water in the BeFree and let it soak overnight before a trip it helps with the flow rate. But I meant the act of freezing likely destroyed the filter.
      The channel is a great resource for PNW bikepacking! Thanks for taking the time to film/edit these videos!

    Have you guys thought about using micro-panniers from Revelate with the rack (saw it on your Vegas-St George video)?
    Cool vid, thanks for sharing.

    • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  2 года назад

      Hey Karl. I have thought about micro-panniers but would only do that if I was carrying a pretty big load. Rob and I have talked about a trip which would require snowshoes, Ice Axe, Crampons, and climbing boots. In a situation like this Micro Panniers make sense. For the majority of the stuff we do, we can get away without them. So until I have a good reason to get some, I just stick with the bags I have.

    Glad the sealant carried you through tumbleweed flats. I had a goat head puncture festival riding along the John Day north of Hay Creek a few years ago. I resorted to cutting my patches into quarters in an effort to keep enough air in my tires to make it back to the car. It ended up being a lovely walk after dark. That ride was the tipping point to finally making the transition to tubeless. What took me so long? Thanks for the great video, but 'd vote against future laugh tracks.

    Any recommendation on what type of bike to purchase for adventures like these? I am basically a total noob with some downhill mountain biking experience in the past. Looks like an awesome sport, wanting to get into it this summer.

    • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  2 года назад

      If I had to have one bike I’d recommend a hard tail like a salsa timberjack or a surly karate monkey or krampus. You may be over biked for a lot of stuff but it can go basically anywhere. I think 2.3 - 2.6 inch tires is the sweet spot. This set up is super versatile and lends itself more to tougher terrain…. If you went with a pure gravel bike you may find yourself limited on the routes you can do . Hope this helps!
