Thanks for your thoughts Cliff. The only thing I’d put differently would be “live” instead of “off line”. Off line gives too much credence to the very thing that is the problem, social media.
Lol! ...yeah, this video is just my response to the question Andy put forward in his own video and my own conclusion to it which is that online and offline are two different worlds and that I believe that offline is where the future of music is in terms of it being an art from and where a new explosive original music scene can exist.👍
The trouble is cliff people don't play for the love of music today but for the love of fame and money the music comes second, but I play for the love of as do you 👍great video Phil 👍
Hi Phil, yeah, I agree, the internet is good in some ways and not in others and the love of music can soon get lost for the short term fame and money. But, I do also believe that "Offline" at some point there will be some sort of passionate music scene again. I am making another video on this which I will upload later this week as I do believe that there is a future and some hope left in music still.👍
It is important to point out 'these' guitarists are only a subset of modern guitarists. They feed on the male proclivity to rank and order things - based on simple criteria; speed, finger wiggling and zooming over the neck. Musicality is way down the list of actual requirements, it is little more than a party trick to impress a section of music listeners - usually male and under thirty who are still arguing over whether Alvin Lee or Rory Gallagher is the best/fastest guitarist. I remember my time in high school, sat at the back of class making these lists with classmates instead of learning 2nd order differentials of transcendental functions back in the seventies. Little did I realize fifty years later guys would be making a good living on the internet compiling such lists. It speaks volumes to the deep male psyche. Back to the internet guitarist phenomenon, the skill is essentially parallel to typing or texting at great speed - it is a passing curiosity. Someone once said something along the lines of ' A great typist does not a great author make.
Yeah and all those men were born and raised by women so it speaks volumes about deep female psyche… what a nonsense worldview, I can smell the frustration from way over here
Hi, thanks! ...Yeah, there are a lot of amazing guitarists/musicians and songwriters out there I agree, but most don't really get heard or the recognition on the internet. ...But, I believe that music offline is really alive and has great hope. I am making a video about this which I will upload later this week. 👍
I agree with you, 100 percent. I guess if more people experience great live bands who rely mostly on music, not visuals it will turn situation for better. Maybe people will start appreciate music more, not treat it like given
Hopefully. I really believe that at some point musicians, bands and songwriters etc will start to go back to playing live and create a really healthy vibrant music scene.👍
Thanks. My view too. Song first. Song always first. How this isn't the first thing Beato and Edwards say in their videos is beyond me. Good songwriting has almost become a lost art. Without good songs, you have what we have today. A musical dystopia ruled over by rapacious corporate labels that see songs as simply products that drive quarterly profits. Interesting what you say about movements needing to happen off-line. I've also often said there are no scenes anymore due to people not playing together in person and mixing and matching ideas, sensibilities and band personnel until something clicks and a new style emerges. I'd like to point you to the hard rock band The Warning, a band comprised of 3 sisters in their 20s from Mexico. As they developed, they rehearsed individually and together as a band for 5 hours a day for years and the results of their dedication are nothing less than remarkable. They are legit throwbacks to great songwriting but doing so without being hopelessly stuck in nostalgia-land.
Thanks mate! ...I agree composition/songwriting is everything. Without it there is nothing to offer. Also, the songs give way to creating a great live show and building an audience that will follow offline as well as online......I really do believe that anyone that really pushes for and creates a scene offline will achieve something special, especially, a scene in a city. Also, offline you get the different characters that create the chemistry and the magic that leads to something unique and original. ....The scene will then probably go online get big and then die out, but for a while it will change musicians perspectives of what's possible .....Thanks, I will give the Warning a listen.👍👍👍
@@CliffordMartinOnline Totally agree. But why did it take so long to find someone else who realizes this? haha. Awesome re The Warning. Some song recs for you: "Animosity", "Choke" , "Disciple" or "Ugh" live at Teatro Metropólitan are great (among many others - the entire concert is masterful). "Evolve" at the 2023 VMAs is great. Songs from their latest album Keep Me Fed are very good but less than great, imo, because the label set them up to collaborate with writing teams is order to quickly record album between tour dates and move them closer to the mainstream. (SMH). So unfortunately their art is already being co-opted by their label. Happy listening. You don't have to be a hard rock fan to recognize how great they are.
@@thespacealienssmogandgrog4283 Hi, yeah they're great. Their acoustic set in one video is really impressive too, great vocals and really good drumming. ..I've seen the bassist before in a youtube short but didn't know who she was/or the band....I agree, that their natural growth may get hampered by record company demand and restrictions, but hopefully they will find a way through.👍
@@CliffordMartinOnline "Also, offline you get the different characters that create the chemistry and the magic that leads to something unique and original." Yes, it's similar to a well rehearsed cast in a play feeding off each other. When it's great it goes well beyond simply saying your lines and hitting your marks.
Hi, Yeah, there are a couple like Joshua Meader who is great. I mean I did a video way back on Matteo Mancuso who at the time was playing some amazing stuff and he was composing some brilliant acoustic pieces. But, the problem is that they all seem to start playing the same way with the same phrasing, and this is what seems to have happened to Mancuso as he became really well known it just resorted to one finger tapping and distortion ... I have done videos/blog posts on Julian Lage too, but I wouldn't consider him a new player as such as he has been around for quite a while and is an exceptional talent, like Pasquale Grasso who is one of my favourites. ...👍
@@cfibanez Hi, yeah, I'm going to make another video about this as I might not have got my points across very well in this video. It's a response to Andy Edwards video and at the same time my own conclusion that the internet is a different world than ""Offline" where songs, composition, and live performance offers a creative future to music. 👍
Thanks David, Yeah, up close and personal is a whole different experience and what made music so great in the past. I still believe there is hope in music, but it has to be offline like the old days in order to create a new scene and I do believe that at some point this will happen again for a while.👍

This Andy Edwards guy also told us how great Meg White was.

Fascinating video and insight. The question is how are you using the term composition?
Thank you for stating it so clearly!
Thanks mate!👍
For a moment I thought, you are Steven Wilson. 😁😁
Lol! Yeah, the thumbnail does a bit like him, wasn't my intention...but...it might get some more views👍

Modern guitarists: Mary Halvorson, Miles Okazaki, Gilad Hekselman, Julian Lage… (many others). They all sound different. Very different.
