But I have two propane tanks that have been sitting here for years because I picked them up when I didn't know any better, and I've been afraid to cut them up. @@TheSkete it's not that the carbon monoxide or water dissipates any residual gas that's left inside. They simply take the place of the oxygen in the tank, meaning a fire can't take place inside. @@randallsmerna384 actually propane is a very heavy gas and simply removing or opening valve might not fully empty the canister. Your input may get somebody hurt because you don't know what your talking about smh
It's weird that they claim the explosion was caused by a spark igniting an oxygen tank. Oxygen itself doesn't exploded when lit, in fact it's actually not flammable. It's an inflammable oxidizer (look it up before claiming I'm wrong). I wonder what actually caused the explosion.
Wow someone who can use google before commenting!? I assume like myself you already knew this and didn't need to Google it lmao but yes a simple search will verify this
Okay, I was a scraper at one time there some risks involved. Not sure if the person injured was on bottled O2? But if he wasn't was not very smart O2 bottles and not usually discarded as waste they are a one to one returnable.... A good scrap yard can unload your truck with a magnet.
except for the liability issues from using a crane with a magnet to lift steel out of a more than likely steel bed and steel frame(excluding the Fords with aluminum beds, but their frames are still steel.) Too much risk of the magnet also accidently picking the vehicle up, which would be bad enough, and equal risk of also possible dropping the truck due to uncontrollable risks that come with using a magnet like that and injuring someone inside the truck on company property. Scrap yard insurance companies literally will cancel a business's policy in seconds if a magnet was used in this manner. That has never been done at any of the 6 different metal scrap yards I used to use, for that very reason. Not to mention that using a magnet strong enough to do what you are suggesting, would be close to the equivalent of risking doing an MRI on someone with steel rods & pins in their bodies or with piercings in, with the same potential result.
Oxygen is an oxidizer. It in itself is not flammable. So it would seem that it was either a rupture of a tank and the high pressure trying to escape caused the tank to "explode" or the oxygen allowed something flammable to explode.
Most yards I know won't take tankes not cut in half and reading comments surprisingly it seems some yards just need empty tanks wit a whole for proof. The scrapper 'may' have compromised the tank beforehand hoping it would be empty by the time he got to the yard. If so Crazy ain't the word for the scrapper who brought the tank in and he would be to blame for this "accident."
They arent supposed to have any tanks with the valves still on.... I used to turn in scrap, I always took the stainless steel valves off and sold them separately. Scary and tragic

I have a friend with no legs who is now roller skating with prosthetics so there is hope.

Most scrap yards dont take tanks unless their cut in half to prove their depressurized for this exact reason.
That is true..any kind of pressurized tank, does not matter what it is.
Everyday we leave our home and go to work and come back home safe we should give God thanks because that's a blessing in itself, bless this poor guy sad situation.
My prayers are with this man and his family. I hope he has strength to enjoy a good life despite the challenges.
Here in the $h¡++Y state of CT many scrap yards won't take ANY tanks or bottles some will do if the valve is CUT off. The scrap business is so appealing to so many. I get great enjoyment from scrappin'. It looks like this poor fella' may no longer have a future in the business. Though on some level, if he's strong and pulls through, I have a feeling he may find ways to get his scrap on in ways that are going to be radical. Like what's been said before, "Never underestimate the ingenuity of the human spirit." I'll add the word mind to that cliche as well.
God bless this man and his mate who was "Johnny on the spot" at such a critical moment. ✌
I’m wondering why the tank ruptured.. Must not have been a standard welding oxy tank. Those are thick. And even if it knocked the valve off, it would’ve been more like a missile than a bomb.
might have been a hospital grade oxygen tank, and one of them might have had a lit cigarette. either way, i feel his pain, i too have had a similar incident at work where i was just doing my job than i was attacked and got my broken to the point i needed steel plates and screws. i hope he gets back to a swomewhat normal life after this,

I'm getting a out of scrapping. I have one load left. But I have two propane tanks that have been sitting here for years because I picked them up when I didn't know any better, and I've been afraid to cut them up. I hear you can fill them with water, or carbon monoxide to dissipate any residual gas. I'm still not looking forward to doing it.
@@TheSkete If you Make sure they're not pressurizing anymore and then take the valves out any propane left ain't going to stick around. Then just take a garden hose and fill it with water and then zip it in half.
As a matter of fact once you fill it with water you know damn well there's no more propane in there because propane is a gas. Once it's full emptied into the other one and you can cut it empty.
@@TheSkete it's not that the carbon monoxide or water dissipates any residual gas that's left inside. They simply take the place of the oxygen in the tank, meaning a fire can't take place inside. Fires need oxygen to burn because oxygen is an accelerant. But if your unsure then stay away. Find someone else to scrap it or sell them outright

@@dindjarin559 a good cranesman won't touch truck. The magnet is strong can be several feet up over bed of truck.
Damn did y'all catch the huge pile of blood next to the truck?

Where I’m at if it’s a any kind of fuel tank it’s gotta be cut in half.
Wow, that's horrifying! !
That’s absolutely horrifying. Such dangerous work people have to do… I hope he is compensated with millions for having to go through this. Our limbs are priceless and he may never be able to work again.. not sure if he’s lucky or not to live through this, but I have seen burn victims grateful for their life even after the accident. Guess it’s what you make of it but I hope this man has a lot of loved ones around constantly through this and that maybe a solution can be found. I have a friend with no legs who is now roller skating with prosthetics so there is hope.
oxygen tanks do not blow up , if they had a tank without a safety cap the valve is exposed , allways cap your tank when in transport . its the law, and they need to be chained up right with caps on during transport.
And release the pressure inside before trying to throw it into a trash pile
@Christoph Hansen - You can take any tank in to scrap, but you have to show it's empty by cutting it in half.

I'm suspicious why they thought oxygen cylinder was scrap. We don't throw those in the scrap pile so it's stolen. What may have happened is they knocked the valve off and the jet of oxygen ripped the guy up. No one takes a full cylinder of oxygen to the scrap yard. Thieves got their reward.
Possibly but they said explosion. That tank would rip a hole right through him and never loose momentum. Something else happened they didn't report or don't know yet. They should have reported this as an accident being investigated because an oxygen explosion is not possible
