- Here is how I remove the ignition switch from my 09 Harley Street Glide without any special tools. Sure, there may be a faster or better way but this is how I do it. I hope this helps some of you all out. Yes, I know I said brass pipe when it was a copper one. Too late now. Thanks for watching....Perform this at your own risk.
This 12 year old video just helped me where all other videos overlooked o e simple step, the key.
Thanks you for the video and I hope your still riding.
I’ve watched a lot of ignition videos. I didn’t even have to finish this one and could tell it was the best detail and tech tip on YT.
I’m a “just the facts” video maker and you did this well. 🙌🏾
Thanks! It's an old video but I glad it's still helping people out.
I was taking away the keys and it was misaligned
I had a hard time,
I asked Harley's mechanics for help
No one told me.
I heard that you have to send the bike in repair shop.ㅠㅠ
It has been resolved after watching the video.
Thank you.
You will be blessed.^^😄😄😄
THANK YOU! removed the ignition while painting my bike and inner fairing. unlocked it a few weeks back to remove parts and could not get the ignition switch back in correctly, you video saved my butt!! Your the man!
This is the best video about it, CONGRATS!!!!
After struggling with the switch for over an hour, it hit me; look on RUclips. Voila, there you were. After that, it was SIMPLE. Thanks a whole bunch.
I'm glad it's still helping people out.
What size tubing did you use?
Great video. I would like to note that there used to be two types of switches. This is the procedure for the International switch.
The domestic switch (which is no longer used) removes similarly but in the "Access" position rather than the lock position and doesn't use the spring. It also requires a smaller tool to turn. I'm not sure of all the years the domestic switch was used but I know it seems to be on the early 2000's up to about '06 or so and on random bikes at that.
The bottom line is if your switch doesn't come out in the lock position you probably need to turn it to the accessory position.
Just to let everyone know..I spent days trying to figure out why my 2005 Electraglide would not LOCK! I finally figure out that the CLUTCH cable was being pinched (Not ALLOWING the Fork to make FULL LEFT) thanks to this Video, I had the knowledge to remove
Thank you so much for making this video - I was struggling an hour and a half. Didn't have the tool like you but a medium common screwdriver worked too. Thank you again.
Thanks for making this video, your instruction was straightforward. I used a screwdriver and got things lined up and ignition is working fine now. Greatly appreciated brother!
I wanted to say thank you so much for your video, I was working on my bike and the handlebars moved. Because of your video I was able to get my bike back together, People like you are GREAT!.
This just helped me out. I thought I was going to have to get the bike towed to the dealer. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this video. NOBODY said anything about taking the ignition off in the locked position. You saved the day. Thank you!!!
Great video, appreciate the work put into making it. For those asking about the home made tool, I made mine using 1/4 copper tubing. In the video he said brass and that would probably work better. I flattened about 8 inches in a vise and bent the flattened end in half so I had 4 inches of it double thickness. Then I wrapped that in electrical tape to keep it tight. I didn't make the bend to have it going the correct position but it unlocked the forks so I could adjust my handle bars and when I was done it relocked them so I could put the ignition switch back in. Again, thanks for the video.
1/4” worked. I thought his was 3/8 tubing
Great video. I wanted to replace the cover below the switch but it could not be removed with the forks locked. I had followed the instruction but did not have the extra handmade tool. I tried to unlock the forks with the shaft from the the Harley lock mechanism but that would not work. Ended up removing the lock mechanism with the forks unlocked then once the cover was replaced I turned the forks to the lock position before reinstalling the lock mechanism. Everything aligned properly with no issues.
Great video! We could actually see want you are doing, unlike some other people's videos who have their arm or something in the way! LOL My husband simply used a screwdriver in place of your homemade tool. It's easy enough to figure out where you are by turning it all the way to accessory and then count as you turn it back.
Thank you brother for learning and sharing your experience and this video. Watching your video, I managed to synchronize my ignition again. I made a tool, not as well made as yours but thanks to your idea I was successful. Thank you again.
Thx brother very well done!! We were F'N around so long with the ignition trying to put it back together after we installed new forks on my dads bike. I found you, and you saved my ass!!! Thx man!
Dude, this video helped me so much. You wouldn't believe the time I was having trying to figure out how to but that ignition switch back in. Thanks
Dude you have no idea how helpfull this is I screwwed around with mine for two days befor I got it rite
Thanks so much for sharing. Made your tool and saved a lot of frustration and cash.
Beautiful video. The best I have seen so far !!!!!!!
I installed a painted inner fairing this weekend, and the only problem I had was this dang switch. Went and bought the HD tech manual. Their ignition alignment tool is $98.95!! I found one on the Internet for $25. We'll see. I love my '07 Ultra Classic, but screw you HD for making everything so expensive!!!! Seriously? A hundred bucks for a piece of metal?
Was the tubing 3/8” or 1/4”
This video is a savior. Thank you.
Very helpful video. Ingenious solution to releasing the front end.
SOunds like someone is showering in the background LOL
Lifesaver. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you very much this make my day:) Best regards from Sweden
Saved my ass! Thank you! Best explanation and video on RUclips!
Be sure to electrically tape 1/4 inch copper tubing to prevent possible shorting of switch as shown in the video - he just doesn't mention it - or in lieu of this, be sure to disconnect battery. A taped correct sized flat head screw driver works too.
I saw a video similar to yours a while back, and they said you/all Harley owners, should always lock their forks/ignitions, when parking/securing their bikes, so someone doesn't come along with a small screwdriver, and a homemade tool, similar to yours, pop your ignition lock, insert homemade tool, and proceed to very quickly steal/ride off with your bike!......I'm not sure what difference it makes if you have a HD, or other alarm system on you individual bikes or not? But maybe you or others could comment on this?.....At least the thieves, with the forks unlocked, could then roll the bike into a trailer or other vehicle, and your bike is still GONE!.....One other thing.....I have seen other folks commenting on ignition lock problems, like you discuss here, and I wonder if, in some cases, someone might have tried to steal there bikes, by trying to unlock or remove the ignition switch cover, and messed it up during an attempt and failed, thus person comes out to their bike the next morning, and ignition will not work properly, due to tampering?....any thoughts or comments?
Thanks a lot! I looked so much for something like this vídeo and finally I get it! Hugs fr Brazil.
Two Words-Great Video!!
Fantastic video - Thanks so much for sharing... This switch has caused me lots of grief but think I can now manage it... Any suggestions for fixing the switch "popping out" inappropriately? Think it has to do with the little tang underneath...
Thank you verry much for your video you saved me a lot off trouble
You're very welcome. I'm glad it was able to help you out.
Great instruction video -- couldn't be more clear. Thank you!
You're a really smart guy !!!
I just wanted to say thanks for the video
Great information! Worked perfectly…Thanks!
Glad it worked for ya!
Very useful video. I used it with success, but not with the fairing in center position, because I don't have the right tool. I tried with a screwdriver but it was not ok. Same question : what is the good width of the tool ? Thanks.
Great information. I found it on HD Forum.
great info there , a must know,tip , explained clear as ..thank's Ryan o
Very helpful video. Basically this was a lifesaver! Thanks :)
Very well done,so easy to use!

Oustanding!! Thank you for sharing this process.
you saved my a$$...thanks for your video
Glad it helped you out.
Thanks for the video. When I locked mine then back to on I lost power, I kept cycling the switch back and forth till power came back. It’s done this twice. Any ideas?
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
You got it. Glad it's still helping people out.
Thanks for the video...saved me.
I JUST DID MY 2010 ELECTRIC GLIDE ULTRA CLASSIC AND USED A SCREW DRIVER. SUGGESTION, LOCK WHEEL LEFT, UNLOCK LOCK BY TURNING KEY BEYOND OPEN AS SUGGESTED HERE, PUSH PIN UNDER LOCK HOUSING AND OFF IT COMES. IT YOU NEED TO MOVE WHEEL, THEN DO SO. IF LOCK HOUSING DOES NOT GO BACK WITH WHEEL TURNED TO LEFT LOCKED POSITION, THEN USE A SCREW DRIVER AND TURN INSIDE OF POST A SLIGHT LEFT TO THE LOCK POSITION IT SHOULD (LOCK ASSEMBLY) GO IN. Good Luck
Hey man your video saved my but thank you very much
Glad its still helping people out.
Damn this!! Been trying to put this back for hours. Nothing is working
I need to take the ignition switch out to adjust my handle bar setting- yes?
u ar the MAN. tks.
Great video. Thanks for that.
Great Video. My '07 RK Classic ignition switch has some play in it. Turn on and no juice. Wiggleback and forth & she powers up. Any ideas what might be the cause? Do I need to replace the switch ? Tighten something underneath ? Very grateful for any experienced suggestions. Thx in advance...
I pulled ignition wile wheels straight. I put lock back
I have tumblers all lined up switch goes back in but won't unlock. It moves maybe halfway to off position tried coming wheel back n forth at same time still won't relsease
great video ...cheers
How do you put a steering lock in a 1999 Road King. If you don't the key for it. Thank you.
I like video but temporary key either shorted or only moved part of switch ,power came on only once need to find open fuse ,could not find any in the fuse box or inline at battery
I have an 02 Ultra but the key hole in the switch is buggered up and the key will not go in nor turn. Can I follow the same process to remove and replace with a new switch ? thank You.
great video... thank you.
Helped out, thanks much.
Seems to be a lot of videos on here to replace the ignition switches. Is that a common problem?
I don't Remember you say what Size of Copper Pipe you used to make your KEY !!! So can you answer me that ??? I would really appreciate that... Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Grazie mille e stato molto utile .
hey i have a 1991 electra glide tryan remove my inner fairing now and just cant seem to get ignition switch off wondering if you know how.? different design no metal tabe not same as my new street glide
BRAVO !!!!
Good job Thanks
THANK YOU !!
You're welcome. I'm glad it's still helping people out
What a simple bike that Harley can ride without keys, it can make a copper rod, but somehow screw threads must be lubricated with mastic so that it is does not unscrew on the move ... awesome!
What's the dimensions of the tool you made? I want to make one for my tool kit. Thanks in advance
great vid Tks
Thanks!
You're welcome! Glad it's still helping people out.
can u remove the ignition switch with a key bc I need to replace mine
Can I tighten handlebars on a 2000 electric light without outremoving the Ignition switch
I dont believe so.
I need tht key he made🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
Am I screwed without my key?
Got it 😊👍
Glad it helped ya
i lost the key. How i can remove this switch without key ?
is this the same as 90 electra glide
damn I need that tool!
My issue is that I took the lock apart to have it powder coated. My buddy but the shaft back in with =out the spring in it and now I cannot get the shaft out. Do you have any idea on how to get it out? Thanks.
You did not remove the ignition switch but merely the cover switch is down below
You are correct to a point. Google "Harley ignition switch" and that's what they call the switch. To be 100% correct, they call it the ignition switch / fork lock. Thanks for watching.
@@cll375 had the switch go bad on a buddy's bike had to replace it . Whole different can of worms to say the least when ya get into it !
vlw me ajudo bastante
,,
Great video but doesnt work....Why are Harleys engineers so pathetic they cant make anything basic....That little lock doesnt release mine so im going to bust the cover and the lock off and replace the shit and sell it....Buying Indian this is too stupid
It's works if it's done correctly. What's the problem?
thanks for posting
