- Cuttlefish bone casting is a form of gravity casting and was used thousands of years ago across the Mediterranean and areas that were near the sea or ocean.
The texture obtained from this type of casting is unique and each casting produces a different texture every time.
Andrew Berry shows you how to carve a pattern into a piece of cuttlefish bone and cast a simple design using odd pieces of scrap silver using a minimal amount of cheap equipment.

I bought some cuttlefish for this purpose, but I wasn't sure how to go about it. This explained so much, I feel pretty confident in giving it a go. Thank you Andrew.
“Cuttlefish Bone” love the texture so much. It reminds me of The art on American bills.
This is without a doubt the best tutorial on cuttlefish casting I have ever seen, something I have never tried, tomorrow I am going to go and buy some cuttlefish
I appreciate how many of your videos are more advanced or at least not so basic. Both are important of course, but it's great to find that extra bit of learning, especially when you live where there is next to ZERO opportunity to take classes other than "How to wire wrap an eye pin". Thanks again!
you're my number 1 inspiration and teacher when it comes to my journey into jewelry. Thank you very much
That was so amazing I didn't know anything about that or realize that you were using a real cuttlefish!!!
I am always looking for low cost low equipment ways of doing things. I've just started out and don't have an actual shop n really don't know what I'm doing! thanks for all the great videos! keep em coming!
The details about rubbing it on the neighbor’s wall was fantastic
Yes, but he never specified the kind of wall. Not very helpful, no matter how hysterical.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just want to thank you for all of your videos.
Having seen the textures I'm definitely going to have a go ☺ Thank you for the video
love this lesson wonderful , easy to follow Andrew. You are a brilliant teacher. Many many thanks again..
A charming tecnique And a wonderful tutorial .. A massive Thank You for all your exciting videos :-)
This technique is quite interesting. I was unfamiliar with this and look forward to working in that technique. Thank you for the concise details.
Brilliant, thank you Andrew. I did have some information for cuttlefish casting, but not enough to risk the silver..you have nailed it perfectly for me. I do appreciate your step by step logical approach to the videos!..
Very good tutorial, I have to try it. Thank you for sharing👍👍😊.
Awesome Video! Thank you Andrew!!!
That was FRIGGING AWESOME! I am headed to the pet store right now. Thanks so much! Your piece came out beautiful!!
Excellent. I'll be setting up my workshop again in a few months and I'm looking forward to trying this . Thank you kindly for the tutorial 🙏😎👌
Didn’t think of this, I’m glad you did I was trying to cast a brass insert as my tungsten carbide wedding ring is to big after some weight loss, I tried casting into plaster of Paris and into some green sand but the molten brass set before it completely filled the mould even though I preheated the green sand till it was glowing 😂
Followed this video yesterday to do my first ever casting, I've been working sheet and wire for 20 years so have lots of little pieces of silver kicking round. Anyway, it worked really well and I now have a very similar pendant around my neck. Thanks for all these amazing videos.
That is so cool. Would love to see a picture. Do you go on the Q&A's on a Monday?
Excellent video!
Good! I plan to do this.
Amazing video! Thanks very much!
this is very cool. thank you! going to give it a go!
Thank you so much. This was brilliant.
Excellent! Thank you!
IT'S A MIRACLE!!!!
Very nice Keep up the good work 😃👍💯
Cooles Tutorial Thank you
Very good job thanks 👍
Really interesting I kept thinking that method of casting came from ancient Egypt for some reason it just seems really REALLY old haha.
I’ve Been getting my hands in the jewelry business. I Made my first 925 necklace pendant diamond shaped it came out pretty good. As soon as I can I’m gonna join at the bench and that I can promise you cause I need all the knowledge I can get and u seem to have it. Thanks for all the videos you’ve done on RUclips 🙏🏼
Great video. Thx!
Good one I am enjoying your class
Ack! That sound gives me the heebie jeebies. Love your videos, however. I’ve learned a ton from you in a very short span of time.
thank you you show the best Tutorial i love it oll thank you so much
Great video. Subscribed 😁
great tutorial, thank you. Question, what size saw blade do you use to cut the cuttlebone? I keep breaking mine.
Loved it
Andrew, you are such a rebel, not telling yor neighbour you are rubbing your cuttlefish on his wall.
Hi Andrew, thanks for this video :) is there a tutorial for how to set stones and gems into the cast? I'd love to add this to my learning x
I live near a beach and just take a walk. Cuttlefish bones are all over the place. A quick boil to clean them up and let them dry thoroughly and they're good.
Your the best🥰
Andrew, where do the crucible tongs and crucible you are using in this video come from? I have never seen that type of tongs before and know only the scissor type.
Mr. Berry, thank you! Could you please post the make of the 'Big Brother' Torch you're using?
Andrew that was awesome !
Dang super cool 🤠
Thanks, I've been wanting to know about this! By the way..... Where did you get your little soldering station? Did you build it yourself? It's just what I've been lookin for! Love your videos!
cuttlefish is conposed mainly of calcium carbonate, so shouldent hurt if you ingest any, altho breathing cuttlefish bone can result in occupational asthma, so best to remember that dust mask ;o).
I can just picture the headlines for the evening news anchor, "Can you identify this person? Suspect sought in cuttlefish feeling incident. Also, can you identify the strange white powder piling up against brick walls all over the city? Video on the 11:00 news." Okay, now it's off to the pet store to make some headlines....umm errr...art.
Great inspiration, thanks!!
hello Andrew, could the cuttlefish be used as a open cast to obtain a smooth back to item I wish to cast? Many thanks "H"
"Touch" the cuttlefish lol I laughed out loud on that one haha
The videos are amazing....but what's the make of the torch you are using please and where would I buy one from thanks
yes please....what is that 'big brother' torch??
Can this be done with copper as well?
Could you make a cast out of plaster of paris and cast into it
Great video! Very instructive. What is the material you made youre heatproof area from? I have to work outside and it seems a very good design to work wit in my garden. Again ... mucht thanks foor this video!
Greetings from the Netherlands,
Jan
Hi here is the link to show you how to make the soldering area ruclips.net/video/7GZPsXYgRWI/видео.html and here are the boards we used atthebench.store/product/square-soldering-board-various-sizes/?attribute_size=300mm+x+300mm
Can you get fine details using this method e.g.small figurine pendants? I've been trying to do this but dunno know how. Got the necessary equipment but not the know how!!! Tks
You wont be able to get fine detail using cuttlefish bone for casting. Search for my other films on Delft Clay Casting as this is a far better technique for models with fine detail.
can you use the bone for a one time open face mould like an ingot pour or do you need it to be up right poured with a channel to safely use it
Yea you can have it open if you like. Not sure on how it would turn out as you would need to know the exact amount of silver needed
Orca handle propane the best !
Hi Andrew Berry. I am obsessed with cuttlefish casting and have a question for you. How do we make sure that all microscopic traces of cuttlebone are removed from the piece to keep people with severe shellfish allergies safe when they wear them?
I'm just a beginner but I would have thought that a diluted pickle bath would dissolve the calcium carbonate.
Brilliantly videos Andrew, thank you. Where did you get the booth you’re using from? I’ve tried looking online, can’t seem to find anything like it.
Viki Rose Just search 'Jeweller's bench' or 'Jeweller's desk'. Alternately buy an ordinary workdesk and simply cut the arc out.
He made it himself. its in another video where he describes the material but its just heat resistant fire proof boards
please do a cuttlefish ring. i did one once and it turned out ok. my ex lost the ring though. I SHALL TRY AGAIN!
Great tutorial! Which torch are you using to melt the silver?
Have you figured out his torch yet? ive been looking for a larger mini torch!!
I'm sorry but what material is this box made of, in which you melted silver? Can you tell me where to buy something like that?
If you buy a brand new crucible do you have to do something to it before using it?
Yes, you want to take borax and sprinkle in powdered borax off the block into the crucible while the crucible is red hot after applying flame for a few mins
Andrew, do you know if the basic store bought Borax powder (for killing cockroaches) is the same as the powder flux borax? Thanks, great vodeo, always wanted to know the in-depth method, wonderful!
Yep borax is borax
Thank you so very much for responding, very grateful!
Isn't the funnel going to stick to the molten silver?
Dastardly Berry!! Your neighbour...
while I do like the texture but would like to know can you cast with cuttlefish without having that texture ?
You can't. You'd have to file it all down after.
hey there. Why do you sand down the rounded side? Why not just use the flat side? Thanks
You sand down the soft side so you can put two bones together. Gets them nice and flat so no metal leaks out
Did you just melt silver with a butane torch? 😯
What is your heat proof box made of
its in Other one of his videos. he made it out of fire proof boards, like soldering blocks but not quite. I cant remember what its called
could you not quarter the part sticking up, and make a 4 prong setting out of it?
Yes you could. Very innovative 👍🏼
I think I will have the cuttlefish on a soft surface when I am carving into it. I am a little more heavy handed.
Can I cast gold instead of silver in the cuttlefish?
Yea you can use gold too
24:13 no matter how long i soak it in water i always do that lol
😮 Are these the same as the Cuttle Bones we give to our birds to chew on 😮 ?!?
Tracy Lustick Yes. The very same
yes yes it is
Yes, Tracy - they are.
I know you have been given the answer BUT if you track a local beach especially after a large storm you will often find lots of these on the shore... fyi. have fun ... ;)
سعيد
"Plump" ......that's up there with the unspeakable "m" word ( _clue:_ rhymes with 'hoist').
Thanks for the great walk through!
Excellent for when you need to fight werewolves
Why do you put borax into the melted silver?
Hi, here is a video that I did a few years ago that will explain. Also most of the melting down films here on YT, I explain the reason why ruclips.net/video/75nZQ2wFbCI/видео.html
I wonder how does his workshop smells after that cast
Calcinated bone polish
O
😳 Catfish
I hope your neighbour isn't watching.
Nice to learn new things... however, my mind can't stop comparing the "nice texture" of the cuttlefish with these pesky lines that you actually DON'T want when 3D printing, ending up smoothing most of them. XD
I know this is an old video, but i hardly believe all these cuttlefish are just washed up ashore in perfect condition, waiting to be collected up. They trap, net, or somehow catch them in the wild and kill them. I would discourage people from using theae. Use delft clay, or the other means of casting you mentioned instead. The cuttlefish are one use throw away items, and not worth killing our sea life for our fun and convenience.
its realey called cuddle fish boning
nope, nope, nope....etc.
Thousands and thousands of years??? Earliest known reports of cuttlebone casting is mid-16 century, so your just a “couple” years off your history
Check out Ganoksin “here is evidence of their use in casting throughout history, and while I don’t have direct archaeological example to prove it, I strongly suspect that they would have been used by the Vikings and others in the middle ages. “
Way too much work even for simple designs.
