Body weight exercises are good and functional. But you'd prolly get bigger and stronger adding in some weight and machine training. Plus the bigger you are doing calisthenics movement the more impressive it looks.

The main reason most people lift weights is because you can start out under your bodyweight if you’re too scrawny or too fat to do your own body weight no offense to people who fit that in fact, I couldn’t do calisthenics for a while, but I wanted to do hybrid. I had to lose some weight first because I couldn’t support my own bodyweight without training. But that is why people don’t do calisthenics.

Volume(time under tension)& intensity(stress) Eventually you hit a point with calisthenics where your stronger than you body weight so you add variations to increase intensity and sets to increase volume. There’s no calisthenics exercise that will add the same amount of intensity as a 400lb barbell squat 315 bench etc. calisthenics is amazing for aesthetics and athletic strength(explosive power). Not so much for absolute strength(more plates more dates).

Compound exercises like bodyweight pullups/pushups etc have been around longer then human history itself, for example have you ever seen a monkey pull itself up into a tree using his arm(s)? Highly likely if you have seen some national geographic. Now ask yourself, have i ever seen a monkey lift a dumbell? Or do a deadlift? Yet a 130kg gorrilla would rip apart a similar weight bodybuilder. I can go on for a little longer but you get the point, iam not shitting on bodybuilder here let that be clear please, as ive said i respect every1 putting in the effort. I just want the people putting in the effort to be truly strong and fit until their old age unlike bodybuilders who have destroyed their joints with weight training. Now iam not even a profesional but i know some1 who is and i will grant you their knowledge for free. There is a book out there called Convict Conditioning by Paul Wade. This book is full of absolute killer knowledge and has everything you need to know to get started and become pro in calisthenics. He has written more books after this one but if you really like convict conditioning you will buy those asswell like i did. The book can be found for free on the internet if you look hard enough, i prefer a paperback as it reads easier and the writer deserves some credit for putting it together IMO. Whatever your squat max is with quick descent and a bounce they'll hit that for reps with a long pause at the bottom weighing 150. So saying it's better is way too broad of a statement. Better for what? And I'm in your camp sort of. My upper body workout is chins and dips. But it's not better for looking super stacked. Width and arms will be good and carryover to bench press from dips but if I wanted to look more stacked it would be ohp it would be heavy rows it would be deadlifts (which I do because I need to train lower back and legs and be able to pick heavy things up). But everything is better for something but not as good for something else.

The best way to build muscle is progressive overload. And hypertrophy is best achieved through low rep (around 4-12 reps to failure), heavy weight exercises. You can’t do that with calisthenics
Most people who lift weights will never get so bulky (naturally) that they cant even do a pullup. And you might be genetic anomaly, but most people won’t see any progress & will likely give up after doing months of calisthenics

According to the strength standards of weightlifting. Carrying 100lbs/45kg is nothing. It’s still impressive strength but most people are also able to do that. Try barbell curling above 149lbs/68kg which is advanced level.
If your goal is building muscle, why the hell would you ever choose a purely calisthenics routine instead of a weight lifting routine? Literally all the exercise science literature disagrees with that.
This just depends if you want to weigh under like 200 lbs and your relative strength to be high as fuck or just weigh 300 pounds but be able to pull and push insane weight.
Weights vs Calisthenics is a false dichotomy. Why not train both and get the best out of both? Get strong as fuck legs from squats, DLs, sprinting, snatch and clean and jerk and then also train calisthenics skills, weighted pull ups and dips for upper body.
Problem is if you get injured via calisthenics, you can’t really do much compared to free weights you could just lower the weight until you don’t feel any pain.

I only did calisthenics for 20 months, and i can lateral raise 30 pounds.

best way imo is to do weightlifting, but with dips, squats, and pull-ups that you add weight to.
If your goal is hypertrophy, for 90% of the population, weights will be must better. Calisthenics works, but is extremely inefficient.
The best way to build muscle is progressive overload. And hypertrophy is best achieved through low rep (around 4-12 reps to failure), heavy weight exercises. You can’t do that with calisthenics
Most people who lift weights will never get so bulky (naturally) that they cant even do a pullup. And you might be genetic anomaly, but most people won’t see any progress & will likely give up after doing months of calisthenics
@@cellizanadams6884 well said. this whole "weightlifters cant do a pull up" argument is such a cope. ffs even eddie hall at 360lbs could do pull ups. weightlifters in general will just be stronger and have more muscle mass. obviously that's not to say calisthenics is useless; some of the best exercises (with weighted progression) are calisthenics moves like dips and pull ups. i think its good to incorporate both styles of training.

According to the strength standards of weightlifting. Carrying 100lbs/45kg is nothing. It’s still impressive strength but most people are also able to do that. Try barbell curling above 149lbs/68kg which is advanced level.
If your goal is building muscle, why the hell would you ever choose a purely calisthenics routine instead of a weight lifting routine? Literally all the exercise science literature disagrees with that.
This just depends if you want to weigh under like 200 lbs and your relative strength to be high as fuck or just weigh 300 pounds but be able to pull and push insane weight.
Weights vs Calisthenics is a false dichotomy.
Why not train both and get the best out of both?
Get strong as fuck legs from squats, DLs, sprinting, snatch and clean and jerk and then also train calisthenics skills, weighted pull ups and dips for upper body.
I would do calisthenics but it's a little harder for one that's a bit more over weight

Problem is if you get injured via calisthenics, you can’t really do much compared to free weights you could just lower the weight until you don’t feel any pain.
Weight lifting has higher chance of injuries though
