- Sony A7IV - Hands-on Review / Side by Side Comparison to the A7iii
I'm sharing my experiences and first impressions after using the A7IV for a couple of days and this is my hands-on review of the camera. There have been some significant updates that I'm excited to share with you. I'm also doing a side-by-side comparison to the A7iii.
Is the A7IV the perfect successor to the A7iii?
*NOTE*
I just realised I didn't talk about battery life in the video so here's how I experienced it:
Sony claims a reduced battery-life of 15% in stills-mode. And I confirm that's the case - Since it's the same NP-FZ100 batteries but updated features (such as the processor etc) and higher megapixels. For the shooting I did with some 4K 10bit clips, and some photography. I needed to bring an extra battery for a day out. It would be nice to see an update in battery life, but having he same type of batteries for all cameras in the bag, is worth the reduced battery life in the A7IV imo.

You’re videos are absolutely superb! I just upgraded from my A7iii to the IV! I am excited and learning a lot from you! Cheers mate
CRISP!
Fantastic video, thank you so much for sharing! I have pre-ordered mine already, can't wait to hold it and put it to the test!
Thank you so much! It’s a great camera. You won’t be disappointed!😄
I find that your videos and personal touch is quite refreshing.
Thanks for the review. You’re one of the only
Wildlife photographers out there to do so yet!
I’ve just changed from the a7iii to the a7iv and what I would like to see is a video on the eye AF for birds and the different panning methods. I’m enjoying your videos so keep up the good work
Great video, thank you! Intro footage was beautiful. Your still images are even better…wow!
Thanks a ton!🙏🏻
Awesome, great job on your review with the intro video, kept me along for the commentary. I liked how you mentioned the video profile and color correction or lack there of. I’m sold. Thanks
Thank you so much, glad you watched it :) It's a great camera!!
I heard about this camera now I'm happy mate, u have done a great job 🎉😃
Thank you🙏🏻❤️
Love the video! Nice work!! 😍🔥
The footage looks so crisp! Awesome review aswell! Love how you have stepped up your video game on yt lately, keep it up mate
Thanks a ton Joakim!!
i love your videos! And the footage from the A7IV is awesome:]
great video Olle!! couldn’t have wished for a better youtuber to review this camera!🤩
Thank you so much!
I’m glad you liked it😍
Great Video Olle and congratulations for the amazing opportunity you got! I'm quite sure I will update to the a7iv especially for that flip screen.
Thanks buddy!! Yeah I’m so glad they reached out. So grateful!
Yeah it’s definitely worth it, love the flippy!
I have already preordered the A7IV to backup my A1 for my wildlife photography.
Awesome review buddy! Can't wait to try it out. Might even be tempted to upgrade my A7RIII for that one 🥰🥰
Thanks mate!!
It was a blast to use, can highly recommend it!😃
love your work man!
Glad to hear that🙏🏻❤️
a great start to the video is just breathtaking, respect to you the author
Thanks a ton🙏🏻
Very nice, simple lucid helpful video ❤❤
I LOVE this! I was searching for a camera to buy and I found the a7iii, I don't think I'lll buy the a7iv but this is incredible...
Could you make another video talking about the a7iii? I will greatly apricate that!
Great video man. Wish I can meet you someday and take som wildlife photos 😀 I’ve started to save up for this camera and can buy it in April 2022. Think it still will be hot at that time 👍🔥 Keep it up man.
Väldigt intressant video! bra jobbat Olle👍🥰
Tack så mycket!
Thanks for the video, it's very nice! By the way did you try the AF with the 200-600 + 2x TC? I wonder how good is the AF with that combination.
Amazing video ❤️
Cool quick review from Olle! Love to see @Sony sponsor you this hybrid camera :)
Haha thanks for the support man!
Welcome 😁
Excellent imagery. Despite the features that some see as shortcomings, I see as things that can easily be worked around. Crop, anyone? Either way, I pre-ordered my A7iv early enough that I'm at the front of the line at my local camera store. Personally, I'm excited about it.
Fantastic video. I look forward to using this camera for MACRO photography, and maybe a little video work too.
Yes waiting 😊
Great review and crispy footages wow.
Thanks mate!
That intro 🥹, so good haha. I never understood mode dials, I wish more companies just copied Fuji, having the exposure triangle right there and auto if need be makes way more sense to me than a mode dial.
Lovely review. Just ordered it, and really looking forward to the bird eye AF :)
Thanks!
It’s such a nice camera!🙏🏻
@@ollenilssonen Just hope I will recieve it before the heat death of the universe. Will probably be some waiting....
@@HviteVinger finger’s crossed!!
Great vídeo! Can you make a video showing how you edit in the future?
I am renting the A7iv and a 200-600mm because of you. My biggest issue is the menu coming from my Nikon D500/Z5 system, but I'm sure I'll figure it out. Can't wait to test out the bird eye autofocus.
Great review of the A7IV. I have one on order. The selling point for me is the animal eye tracking! Boom! Thank for the review it’s gained you another subscriber.👍🏻
The canon eos r6 has Ant eye AF really impressive tbh. And the shutter is soft and low toned compared to the a7iv it sounds like breaking twigs very loud. Overall a bit let down on Sony. The R6 won this one. A7iii has 10fps uncompressed RAW the a7iv has 6fps uncompressed RAW a big let down.
Didnt you wish to half waited for the Z9?
@@nachohernandez9491 nope…
Damn that footage was crisp! 🔥🔥Maybe it’s time to switch camera system for me 🤓
You won’t be disappointed!! Thanks🥰
Ollie I’ve always enjoyed the flip screen on my A73. It’s making do with the tools what you have. Like they say a good tradesman doesn’t blame his tools, they get the job done.
Enjoy
Cheers
your footage with this amazing bokeh is just next level, it was an instant sub for me
Thanks a ton Troy!
@@ollenilssonen btw were the bokeh shots with the rising sun shot with the 200 600? The one with the focus on the tree?
@@troywalt4834 Yes it was shot with the 200-600!
@@ollenilssonen alright the whole footage just look so crisp has others have pointed out, so i am guessing the 200-600 is really fantastic for multiple shots not only wildlife
@@troywalt4834 yeah it’s a fantastic lens! Amazing sharpness!

Great video amazing content 👌
Great review!
Thank you!
Hi Olle, nice video. Yes I’m getting a A7 IV, my only complaint is the low max fps you can get. Sony could at least bring it to 15 fps
I find 10 fps with 33 MP is enough. Sure more is always better - but I never had a situation where I found “oh no I need more than 10 fps”.
@@matic2601 surely you are not doing BIF!

Thanks Dalton, appreciate it!!
Thanks for the Informative video Mate...Can you please mention all round Sony lense to be used with Sony a7 IV?? Thanks in advance
I recently got the A74 and I'm enjoying it very much. Are you changing any of the settings in your S cini-tone profile before you shoot video? Thanks for making the video and best of luck to you!
Yes
so now you're getting the newes gear from manufacturers and already doing Hands On Reviews of the most anticipated cameras on the market - that escalated quickly - congrats!

This might be the camera I trade in my Fuji gear for. Would like to switch to full frame and this checks all the boxes.
I am in the same dilema actualy ,but waiting to see what Fuji has arround the corner with their stacked sensor 40 mp XH2.
❤️❤️❤️
So I am switching from Fuji X system to sony because I wanna print big now and I need that AF, its time now. so to try out sony for the first. I think this will be a perfect entry point for me & also will be an interesting learning curve. Honestly for what it does and looking at other cameras, i would say this is fairly priced
It's my dream camera 😭
Thanks for this wonderful video. I'm using Sony A99ii now thinking about upgrade to Sony A7iv but I don't want to give up all my wonderful A-mount glasses. Thinking about adapting A-mount glasses to A7iv using LA-EA5. What do you think? By the wat what is the name of the back ground music on 1:11? I love it!
Hi my friend this is the second video that I have seen by you, and I have to say that I have enjoyed both!!! Lol I'm a photographer that shoots everything but PEOPLE! I love wildlife photography so I'm shooting with the Sony a9. I love landscape photography so am using the Sony a7r3. Some time I shoot macro too. Lol I have yelled so many times at Sony for a flipout screen!!!! I like the a7-4 but it is to slow!!!!!!!!! If it was 36 megapixels and doing 15 or 20 fps it would have been perfect!!! I can't afford the A1!!! So I will wait for the a9iii!!! New subscriber!!!!👍👍👍
Great upload Olle, you gained another sub.
I'm thinking of jumping ship from micro 4/3 Panasonic G9 to the A74
I do shoot quite a bit of video, and some stills, I would have loved this camera to either shoot 240hd or 4K 120p, but to have the other bells and whistles of autofocus I think outweigh the video options I mention. Do you think this would be a good update for me? I intend buying 200-600 and 70/200 f2.8 mk2 and 1.4 converter to complete my armoury. Your thoughts would be a great help. Phil🇬🇧
How is the camera for birds in flight? I had the A7III and moved to the A9II. I shoot 90-95% stills and only occasionally birds in flight. I found the A9II’s Low light performance has more noise compared to the A7III.
Such a shame that the RAW files aren't supported with Lightroom yet!! But even shooting in JPEG, it's pretty much the perfect camera. 👍
Is rolling shutter a really bad in a7iv ? I mainly buying it for short film shooting
Hi, thanks to share your interesting video. I'd like to ask a question please: I make only documentaries in 4K around the world, I don't take Pics. I take interest about a good image quality of the video. I only shoot handheld footage and never use the tripod, does it have a good stabilizer? Do you suggest this Sony A7 IV camera for 4K videos? Thanks you.
Hi, great video but I would like to know what app is best for editing ( I am amateur ), I use adobe lightroom on my phone because I have a bad pc but I was thinking to buy tablet or Ipad sort of device and I was wondering can I have lightroom on it for photos and videos
are there 2 processors in the camera? one for compression and one for focus?
which one is the fast one from the A1 and which is the laggy as f**k one they normally put in the non 'R' models?
do you take photos with the mechanical shutter and e-front curtain on or off?
How's the AF vs a73 for general photography?
I'm thinking of this camera as my first Sony camera. Couple of questions. 7-4 plays well focus wise with the 200-600? I'm guessing so by your photos. I would purchase the 7r4 first but a lot of people have soft focus with that combo. Have you tried any BIF & have you experienced any rolling shutter? I'll be new to video (another reason I think this would be a good first Sony) & probably won't want to color grade any video either. At least not at first. Thanks for any replies in advance.
I heard the same that this camera doesn't work well with the 200-600. Have you tested this yet?
is the sony a7 iv suitable for sports photos? and why the SCENE mode disappeared, it's weird
Beautiful video, but I’m sure the color grading and lens choice plays a big part too.
Ugh I’m a long time APSC shooter and now I’ll be upgrading(adding) to a7iv and Sigma 24-70 2.8. I’ll keep my a6600 gear for hiking, travel, street stuff.
Such a pity that Sony hasn’t upgraded the APSC line with these features. Their thinking seems to be anything less than full frame is for vloggers and doesn’t need an upgrade. Hoping I’m wrong.
Bird eye AF is the biggest drawcard for me so I think next year I will sell my R3 to get the 7IV.
Ha! Yeah, I am getting it, but I don't need it. I just want it!
Well that's it i am biting the bullet and ordering mine tomorrow and with the LA-EA5 adapter i can use all my native Sony lenses i have now and save some money for a new lens 👍
Thank you for your wonderful sharing and the great works.
I use the A7III with 200-600 to shoot flying hawks. There are some fundamental weakness comparing with my friends’ A9 series,
- focus speed on the flying objects, when hawks flying on the back ground of sky, camera focuses and tracks well. But if the back grounds turns to mountains or forests, the AF fails to track immediately
- focus accuracy is a big problem. The quality of 70 percent of the shuts of flying eagle is not solid. Or I can comment that these pictures are not usable. The focus is like some centimeters away from the hawks. A9 series and A1 provide very sharp pictures with more than 90 percent successful rate when you continuously shot the flying hawks.
I’m not sure if these two major issues are resolved by the new A7iv body, if it is worthy to buy A7iv or should I straightforward upgrade my camera to A9II or even A1.
Look forward to hearing your comments or even review video with these aspects. Thank you.
A1 costs 1/4 of an apartment in Ukraine (before war)
There are lots of posts and comments about A7IV and it's problem with not focusing properly with many lenses, especially Sony 200-600 and other brand's lenses. They will probably fix it in few months with firmware update. Hopefully.
Can the Sony a7c do wild life photos too the ix is too Pricey for me
😍👏
This camera is one of the most waited cameras of the year!!!!
Yeah!!
You forgot to Say z9
The only 2 things I don't like are the bigger/deeper grip (does not work with my hands) and the resolution of the monitor (which is half of the a7Riii).
has the shutter problem and mic jac been addressed?
Thanks for the video 🙏🏼 I own an a7iii and I do mostly video work for cooking channel but I also shoot birds as an hobbyist. The only feature that tempts me to upgrade is the bird eye autofocus in video since I like documenting their behaviour. What is your opinion?
More like know your demon. You should try the canon eos r6 it has animal eye af it’s very sticky and sharp also has 12fps the a7iv has 6fps when shooting in RAW mode real disappointing on Sonys behalf.
@@LuisPerez-fy6up but only 20 mp. I can't crop, R6 got overheating issues and many more. May be i got lack of knowledge than u. But I found some issues about R6.
Hi at last I got a7iv
@@Neil_Hasnat Great how does it compare to a7iii
How does the A7iv compared to the A7iii with bird eye tracking and birds in flight? Thanks for sharing.
Hei. Har du sammenlignet A7iii og A7iv, 1080p 60 og 120 mot hverandre? Om A7iv er bedre eller værre enn A7iii. Trenger noe ekstra slow motion innimellom.
Grymt olle! Nu vill jag ju också köpa ny kamera haha 😂
What lens did you film this with? Thanks. Great vid!
Sony 200-600 for the wildlife shots!😃
hello, nice video, did you use the kit lens 28/70 for this video ?
Hey!
No I used a Tamron 17-28 and the Sony 200-600. Sigma 35 1.4 for the close up shots of the camera.
Does it make sense for Wildlife Photography to switch to A7iv from A7Riv for better ISO performance, autofocus ?
I was really disappointed to find out the A7Riv doesn't have Real Time Tracking for Animals.
I have the A7iii with no real time tracking and I just started to shoot birds in flight. I've had pretty good results with high SS but it's hard to compose with animals that move very fast like small birds. I might just need to polish my techniques. How are you liking the A7Riv for birding?
Something I don't understand, the poor resolution of the LCD. Only 1m dots whereas the A7riii and A7riv were updated recently with a better LCD. What's the point?
And how this low resolution flip screen behaves in the real world?
Thank you
thanks Olle! how does it compare to a7iii in detail? I am have a7iii and often lack detail in bird photos.
I think it's better than the A7iii because of the resolution!
@@ollenilssonen thanks!
Ya I'm planning to buy it. But unfortunately in Bangladesh Sony didn't release a7iv yet. May be end of november or 1st week of december I will able to buy it.
It’s a great camera! It isn’t out here as well😃

@@darylswalker haha yeah, wallet’s gonna be empty😂
@@ollenilssonen sorry bank account haha
Do you know how the weather sealing is?
it should be up to modern standards
Would you say the rear LCD shows exposure better? The a7iii's screen is terrible, always blowing out the highlights in the preview
I didn’t reflect on that really.
Sre you sure you don’t have the ”Sunny Weather” option on it?
I know that setting makes it look horrible😅😂
I'm amazed that in your review of the Sony a7iv, that there was no mention of the notorious overheating problems which this camera has befuddled many filmmakers. I had high hopes for the Sony a7iv, but due to the many comments of owner-users, have held back from purchasing this model. In your review of the Sony FX30 when you compared that camera to the a7iv, the overheating issue of the a7iv wasn't addressed. Have u just been one of the few lucky ones, or does the pain of the cost investment hurt so much that one just doesn't want to bring it up? 😎😎
At the time of this review I hadn't suffered any overheating issues since it's cold here in Sweden.
I always do the reviews from my standpoint and I probably need to be more clear about it! :)
I do have had issues with it trying to record for a long time when inside. luckily, I don't do that much inside. But I can clearly tell it's a problem for people in warm countries of people recording long videos!
How would you compare this camera to the Sony a7RIV?! I just purchased it & now questioning my decision 🤔. Mainly bc of the MP’s, flip/touch screen & bird AF. I’d appreciate your thoughts 💭 Thanks!
I haven't used the A7RIV, but I know it's a beast of a camera. If you have the computer power and storage, I'd keep the A7RIV! :D
@@ollenilssonen I appreciate it!! 😄
You stayed with the r iv? I don’t know which one I should get for birding.
Satan så skarp och underbart med flipp skärmen!
Hi Olle! Does the A7iv shoot 10fps in compressed raw with a high speed SD card?
Hi!
Yes it does!🙏🏻
@@ollenilssonen Awesome Thanks!
Thanks for the review Olle, really in-depth. I'm considering upgrading to the A7 IV but I'm mostly concerned about EVF blackout, especially at 10FPS - how's your experience been with this so far? Is it difficult to track animals moving fast sideways? It's been hard to find any info online and I can't get my hands on a model to try it out where I live :(
Thanks for watching it!
I perfsonally don’t see it as a big problem. I’ve tracked flying birds many times and it works great for me. Of course, a DSLR or the A9 is better at this but as I said, not a big problem for me!
@@ollenilssonen thanks for the reply! I've bitten the bullet haha. Hopefully I can make videos as well as you do with it!
Good thing a7 series needed a evf upgrade, and this one got it..
what is your thought about low brust rate (about 5/6) while sooting uncompressed Raw!
will that effect in wildlife photography?
Do you shoot compressed raw for wildlife?
I will be glad if you ans :)
Great review, Big fan of your photographs ❤
Yeah I noticed that. I wished they would have added a higher fps, pr at least the same with uncompressed raw. I always shoot uncompressed on my A7iii, so that’s a bummer!
@@ollenilssonen That's a bummer! Have you ever compared uncompressed vs compressed raw ? PS: stunning work my friend 👌🏻
@@Reno_T I haven't got the new A7 IV, but with the A9 there isn't much difference between compressed and uncompressed raw files, so I always prefer using the compressed files, so, in theory, you wouldn't have any issue using the compressed raw files with the new A7IV as well
@@GiuseppeGessa It got disappointed when I knew about this because the a7III can do 10fps with uncompressed RAW, and considering the new a7IV has a very capable processor and a CFexpress card, I couldn’t understand why Sony would do something like this. This is very important for professionals like wedding photographers, which are one of the main photographers who would buy this camera. I am just hopping the quality of the Compressed RAW will be good enough for wedding photography. For everything else (I mean general purpose use) I think 6fps is not a big deal.
@@Guairenito we are often worried about "small thing" and we don't see the whole system. I'm pretty sure that the image quality of compressed raw files will be good, unless you like to watch them at 200%. When I print my images I don't see any issue color or luminance noise, because of using high ISO
