Honestly, less than what I was expecting it to be. I would have thought it would be a lot better than the Canon R6, but those two are extremely similar
The A7siii becomes blurry at high ISO because the noise gets in the way of the details. Here, having more pixels means that the sharpness is better preserved.
Lmao you're both incorrect The A7IV's dual native iso is at 3200, and between 3200 and 12,800 ISO, the a7iv will look better in low light. Past 12,800 ISO, the A7Siii's dual ISO kicks in, and it will blow the IV out of the water :)
yes but the lowlight test is done with a pretty good lighting inside his office, which results in a better image. But I have seen other tests and it was really impressive.
@@davidglukh6473 I trust my eyes. Whatever the numbers were, the A7IV preserved more details at ISO 102k. The A7SIII got blurry due to noise reduction. We'd have to see a comparison in actually low lighting tho.
Unconvinced by your High ISO test, industry professionals know grain and noise live in the shadows, you weren't in low light, you were in a room correctly exposed with either natural or with artificial light, try this with just a candle on your desk or at night on a dark street corner, that's a real low light high ISO test for noise.
Yeah but call it rubbish and you won’t receive a unit in the future and you won’t have content. Literally ignore everything in product reviews unless they’ve bought it themselves.
People need to keep in mind, that if there is a good enough light source in a room, then cranking up the ISO to 102,400 will certainly have little noise. Lots of manufacturers use this trick. A true low light test is actually in very low light, like a dim room or exterior late in day. Not a lit room. You can see catch lights in his eyes plus soft box LEDs in the room and window light. However Matti is right the ISO looks clean in his footage at this ISO. (show us a camera like the older Sony A7iii or A7ii would handle this same scene with same lighting, that I would like to see, to prove how much better this camera is from earlier generations). If you have strong LEDs in room, would changing ISO matter as much? (maybe in backgrounds in room where no light is hitting?)
I am so satisfied with Sony A7iii even though it could be considered as an old camera this day. However, the footage from A7IV looks amazing. Huge improvement from its old brother.
Haha are you kidding me?! I am not at all underwhelmed by this, this is exactly what I needed to upgrade from the a7iii. The a7siii is just barely too much for what I do, this is perfection in every way. I am happy with every single spec, I wasn't expecting we would get 4K 60 at all to be honest.
I'm going from the A6000 after 7 years of use to the A7IV. I'll probably have an amazing experience lol. It pays to be behind the latest tech for a while the new stuff is always super impressive.
10 bit is no game changer? active stabilization is no game changer? af improvements are no game changers? focus breathing compensation is no game changer? damn i want this camera so bad!
I would check Gerald Undone video that shows how bad the rolling shutter is. This is a horrible video camera. Why would you want to get your audience sick with motion sickness? There are better choices out there.
@@FelixCervantes There definitely are better choices, but at a price. I have shot with an a6500 for a long time until now (which, as you know, has horrible rolling shutter) and I never noticed it. The a7IV will be a welcome upgrade for guys like me who can't shell out the cash for an a7SIII or R5, and want it to be a little stronger in stills than the R6.
One group that doesn't get mentioned enough in these conversations is journalists and IMHO this is an absolutely perfect camera for them: great low light, dual cards, unlimited record time, PD charging, 10fps bursts and good ergonomics.
@@plantxvibe9571 No, a fully calibrated monitor as I am a colorist. I noticed it also later in the video with both the A7siii and A7iv footage. Not sure what picture profile he is using or if he uses a LUT over his footage - but look at his lips and fingers. Way magenta.
The only underwhelmed thing in it is the 4k 60fps supper 35 instead of no crop. They never do it, never make a perfect camera. From photography point of view, it's a great camera, don't know what else could a photographer want. Video side, the crop in 4k 60fps is killing it. Sony could have had a title of a perfect camera just like that, 4k 60fps no crop in A7IV, be it some lesser read out, 8bit only, idk, just have 4k 60fps no crop and there it is, a camera that blows out any competition. Price would be right, photography and video good... pretty much perfect balance. now it feels crippled. Even though it's a really nice camera with plenty of things to offer, but didn't make to the finest. Just because what, fear of cannibalizing sales of A7SIII? But that's a whole other set of customers (in this segment A7SIII and FX3 are biting each other), A7R line - different field entirely, A1- luxurious class for the finest. Cinema cameras? Regular content creators won't buy them anyway, those are for studios and large scale productions, only a handful can afford those systems on their own. Many times I just wanna go and beat crap out of the marketing guys for ruining things that could be dream come true for the masses.
I'm speaking out of ignorance honestly, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think there are technical limitations that cannot be overcome at the intended entry pricepoint. I don't think the decisions Sony is making are purey market-based. Some, sure. But there are real world limitations to what they can pack into a camera at a $2.5k pricepoint. I mean, look at the Canon R5. It boasts 8k but it overheats so goddamn always that it is barely a useable feature. Sony's cams at least deliver on their specs. Can Sony make a hybrid with a huge sensor, high megapixel, and 4k60 or even 4k120 without running into similar overheating issues? I honestly don't know. Frankly, for A LOT of content creators, the specs will work just fine. For myself, I'll probably get the FX3 and then sell my a73 to try and fund a stills cam in the A7R series. I think that selling "the perfect camera" at $2.5k is probably far too low of a pricepoint IMHO.
It's a shame, I'm a little bit disappointed. If the camera could do 4K60 without a crop, I would have ordered it right away. But with this 1.5-fold crop and also with a strong rolling shutter, the camera is no longer an option for me. I don't need 33 MPixels and if I do, I still have my Nikon D800 from 2013 with 36 MPixels, which, if only for photos, is one aperture superior to my Sony A6600 in lowlight and also has a greater color depth. So trying the Canon R6, which can do 4K60 or even the Canon R5? Let's see or: I bought the IPhone 12Pro Max almost a year ago. It can do 4K60 videos and has great video image stabilization through a moving sensor (this was the reason to buy it). Perhaps you no longer need a large camera for everyday use, smartphones are now very close, including at mirrorless cameras. If manufacturers like Sony are skimpy on options for protecting their more expensive cameras on the basic models, they needn't be surprised if people are gradually turning to smartphones. And as always a GREAT video of you.
A74 vs the A7SIII, to my eyes the red tones pop out more on the A7SIII, makes me think the A74 has a tad better dynamic range, of course both look fantastic. A74 is better in low light to my eye as well. What an amazing camera. Someday, someday haha.
@@mahektailor4542 but we are talking about a phone sensor, that is tiny compared to even apsc size sensor and you have to think Sony have got to balance the price point with the specs and the other cameras they have to not overcut their other camera sales putting 4k 60 no crop imo would make the a7SIII quite a bit redundant imo because the only reason then would be to get the a7sIII Is for the 120p. And as you can tell by the low light performance so far, it's really good
A comparison would be fitting an engine to a motorcycle to do a sub 10 secs 1/4 mile vs putting the same engine in a truck. Going to take a whole lot more grunt to get the same time.
@@richrollin4867 You're asking why a camera manufacturer isn't outsourcing its processor to apple or Samsung? Bc they'd increase the cost too much. Canon provides line skipping, it's not unheard of. The screen is awful, esp compared to competition.
@@mattih i dont want to crush the hype for how good these cams are in Low light, been shooting the a7s3 at 100fps in the dark a lot…BUT: theres a HUGE difference between actual low light scene OR (as in this case) a weill lit subject, that is perfectly exposed even at iso 100k. Slog starts getting noisy when its dark AND underexposed, but only in its lower 3rd of dynamic range. So if you still expose correctly iso 100k can be absolutely fine. But if you dont light the subject so well it would be much much worse
Amazing hybrid camera! Love the quick dual dial to switch between stills/video which also switches the settings too! It's definitely a very neat upgrade. I wasn't expecting 10bit 4:2:2 or Scinetone and they gave it to us! I was hoping for 240fps in HD though but that's just me
I thought that I would be underwhelmed by the specs and features of this camera and was sure that I wouldn't be upgrading from my a7III unless it was to the A1. Now I have to rethink that. So far it seems the a7IV could be a real contender. It's more than I thought it was going to be.
@@julieannhobbs6456 the short answer, your focal length becomes magnified. For example if you have a 100mm lens on your camera it is now more like a 150mm lens.
i've been a nikon guy for 20 years, and now i have the same dilemma. i think canon has still better ergonomics, but 20 megapixels are a bit disappointing. sony has a better lens ecosystem too (for a non pro user that sticks to the holy grails of lens)
Just get the A7C for half of the price of a A7 IV, if the a7 iv had full frame 4k 60fps i'd see me spending twice the money on it but paying double the amount for just 10 bit isnt worth it at all. Also the form factor of the A7C is an advantage worth mentioning for video imo, at least when filming handheld
@@FerrariRari I still think so, granted I thought the a7c was $2k and not $1.8k. I think if you’re going to do video production as a business that you really should get this one for the 10bit. Which means slog3 is money, which means dynamic range is fully utilized. However, just content creation, I believe there is an argument to be made for a7c
To the untrained eye I think its much of a muchness, but when you put them side by side I preferred the look of the A7S3. But for me this would be a real winner for point and shoot youtubers that don't have the skill or the wish to do full colour grading like you, Matti. For me, the ideal vlogging camera is something that has good enough colour without the need for colour grading and amazing stabilization. Shooting with my A6400 is painful for vlogging because if the lack of IBIS.
Just bought a A7c for personal car photography, do you believe I should return it and wait for the A7 IV to release since we really don't know when with the shortages etc?
120fps at 1080 is the only disappointment for me, really would think Sony would be able to improve on that for $2500 so many years after first doing it.
I was initially a bit underwhelmed from a specs point of view, but seeing this thing in action now there's no question that I'll be switching to Sony in the next couple of months. This thing honestly looks cleaner at 102400 ISO that my 80D does at 800 😅 Not to mention the stabilisation when vlogging just trashes the IBIS of the EOS R cameras; definitely a no brainer for the hybrid shooter. Really appreciate the hands-on look from you Matti; based on specs alone from other creators I really wasn't convinced until I saw this 👏
@@Thai.H No overheating, oversampled 4k, low light, dynamic range, alot alot better lens selection, much easier to edit codec. I'm sure canon has its advantages, but soon we'll see exactly which is the better choice when comparison videos are made
Am I crazy or does the A7IV look more natural for skin tones than the SIII? Matti looks a bit too orange on the SIII. Disappointing they cropped 4k60 so much (was hoping for 1.1-1.2 at most) and wish the touchscreen was higher reso (at least 1.44), but this looks incredible for the price.
@@Pfagnan it makes no sense. imagine phone companies trying to protect last years phones by crippling this years phones. as tech moves forward everything is supposed to get outdated. its a lazy move by sony.
I’ll be sticking with my A73, can’t beat the price to performance. No doubt this camera looks good, but it is not revolutionary and you can get similar performance and end results with the A73..
Eh. I just sold my A73 for an A7SIII. The awful lowlight and lack of 10bit 422 was enough to make me upgrade to that. The performance is not similar at all. SLOG3 10 bit 422 is a whole new ball game. Even the GH5 looks lightyears better than A73 video.
The photography part on the A7III is way better, it depends what you value the most, Video over Photography or the other-way around. But for a hybrid shooters the A7III is still the best for it’s price, i would not be happy using an A7sIII for photography only while using the A7III for video i could deal without the 10bit. Also a bonus is when you use Sony’s apsc camera’s it pairs very well with the A7III. I personally would only upgrade towards the A7IV when Apsc is on par on the video side. That way i have the best biggest and smallest option to bring with me, within my budget :)
I'm a a7iii user and I'm not so excited to upgrade to this camera. If ever money is no issue, I will get the a7siii instead and keep my a7iii dedicated for photo.
I am just a hobbyist photographer and the A7IV is for me... Vistek already have my money. Also I am proud of all the Canadian tech youtubers like Lew and Gerald that you mentioned all the way to you, Peter and Linus.
One thing I've liked about the A7S III is that the colors seem more intense...saturated? than on the Canon R5. The A7 IV looks excellent compared to the A7S III but it seems like is shares that more muted color palette I've seen on the R5 as well - particularly in your demos. By which I mean, "the A7S III always looks super vibrant in your videos, in a great way"
Do you have all your sony picture settings somewhere? My colors never look like your colors. It's always muddy and I'm not entirely sure why. I'm rocking the a7iii with the gmaster 24-105 f/4. I know heavy vlog lens but ya boy is on a budget and I will occasionally toss the $130 16mm 2.8 on if I can't get wide enough
Now a third time: to balance out my frustration: im mad at sony for this, because the a7s3 is a camera a will never sell. Its just such a friggin monster. I shot an art-project yesterday with some aerial action on a castle and i basically shot 100% in 4k100 with autofocus in great dynamic range slog3 10bit 4:2:2. The camera basically ran like this for almost 3 hours straight with the odd minute of downtime in between shots (maybe less then a minute each, just to save battery) and then to round it off we did a spontaneous photoshoot where we shot on the same camera for another 800images in 20minutes with basically perfect results. The camera never slowed down, never ever showed any overheating signs and the results are absolutely amazing. There is simply no other Camera that couldve done that. The r5 wouldve imploded like a sunstar after half an hour, the c70 wouldnt take pictures and any bigger cinecams either dont have good autofocus or wouldve killed me as a gimbal operator after 1hour. So yeah, im salty at sony for not giving me the perfect sidekick to the a7s3 there, but no, theres nobody else that does what Sony does atm. Just my 3cents.
I’m currently in the market for a camera upgrade. From Canon. I do red carpet videography now with some lifestyle stuff, but lately clients have also asked for pictures. So I def need a hybrid cam. My current canon body and the sigma lens i pair with it are great for pics, but my videos don’t look as cinematic as I’d like and I want to book more lifestyle gigs, so I think switching to Sony is a better investment for me. Thanks for this. I’m keeping my canon kit for pics or to rent out to others but you’ve convinced me to switch to Sony.
It´s amazing the times you said amazing. I think you are trying to convince yourself, or your viewers. Looking to other reviewers, they were not that impressed with the camera. It seems Sony is following the previous strategy from Canon, with the criple hammer. Almost in 2022, a new camera that only shoots 4k30p (I don´t count with the crop mode, it´s useless), an lcd screen from the 80´s, a similar IBIS as the ones from 2018, the same fps, or even worse (around 6fps), and the list keeps going. Anyway, should be a great camera, but this time, a more conservative move from Sony... and at the end, is just another camera.
I honestly could see no difference whatsoever between the two cameras in this video, if there was, it was so miniscule that it wasn't worth noticing. I have an A7siii, I'm happy with it! What I am curious about is the iv's ability to shoot in 7K and "squeeze down..." if it can do that, why isn't there an option to output at 7K anyway? That would be great.
One thing that would be helpful for me would be a comparison with an A7 III. How much better? That’s what I use as my main camera… Is there any clear benefit to replacing/upgrading it?
Yes, better AF is one of them. I reccomend you to watch also a video from Julia Trotti - she was using a7III as a professional wedding photographer and she said that she will upgrade. check it out to get another point of view. I liked her review
The specs, this camera has it all, awesome AF, great lowlight ability, 33MP, 10 bit 4K 422, and those dials for switching between the 3 modes makes is really versatile. Price is a bummer, but that’s something I can overcome. Biggest problem with this camera is the maximum 5fps with uncompressed RAW and lossless RAW. Common my A7III does 10 fps uncompressed RAW, no idea why they made this limitation, 10fps is the standard for years. With this limitation the price tag becomes a problem.
I feel like its just so close to an A7SIII that I would just rather get an A7SIII as its slightly better and takes great photos as well, but the price is great as an upgrade from the A7III, a B-cam, or even a first camera.
Since even GoPro does 5.3k in 60 and 4k in 120 so in reality it should at least be that sadly. The low light is the real only difference. They have to step up the stats there and the in body stabilization if they are going to charge 10x
I did a double take seeing unbox therapy’s studio… as a big “Grandma’s Boy” fan, it is without a doubt, JP’s testing playground (or second office) for sure! 🤖 needs a Segway and techno in there
Great info! I'm thinkng about joining team Sony. I mostly shoot talking head footage in 4k 30. I am debating between the a7IV and Cannon (R6?). My only hesitancy is that, side-by-side, the Cannon footage seems to have punchier, more vibrant colors and skin tones out of camera. However, colors look good in this video! Do you think that I can achieve Canon (or better) colors out of camera (without grading)? Thanks again!
I’ve been a Sony user for years and I work at a production facility that uses FX3 & FX9. I just bought an R5 as the color is great with hardly doing anything to it. Sony color info is great so I can eventually get the Sony to look great.
I dont understand who in their right mind would be upset with this camera....how materialistic have we become that we need MORE than what this camera offers? i know people who still shoot wedding videos with the canon 5dm2 for crying out loud. This camera would be a MAJOR upgrade for them
You said it Andrew! The A74 has so much going for it. I got my 6400 2yrs ago and if I hadn't already bought 5 APSC lenses, I'd make the jump to the A74. I'm a constant hybrid shooter and SO wish my camera had that 'quick change' button between Photo-Video-SloMo while saving 'last used' settings. What a nice feature! I'm already envious of future A74 owners :)
Thanks for the review Matti. Another great video. Not so much expecting more capability but want it to be not much more $$$ compared to current options.
Would you say that this could be a good option for "birding" (fast- moving birds) etc .... but, VIDEO ? I'm wondering about the AF .... Or would the A7III be enough ?
Were you using the exact same settings when you switched from A7S3 to A7IV when vlogging? If yes, to me the A7IV's skin tone is more natural & pleasing. A7S3's skin tone seems a bit yellow.
Hello my friend I am one of your followers, your work is great A question ? I am a wedding photographer (photos) What do you recommend to use? nikon d850 or sony a7 iv or sony r7 iv Thank you
Ah cool! I think this camera is going to be very popular. I like that it focuses on quality instead of putting in as much features as possible. And the low light performance is breathtaking. As a concert photographer that is always very welcome. It won't let me switch from Fuji, but I like it when companies put in a lot of effort to make meaningful improvements. Well done Sony!
Great video and was hoping it would help me decide which camera to buy but im possibly more confused 😂 So if you had to buy a camera to do youtube, plus photos etc would this be your first choice? or is there something new on the horizon i should be looking at?
The only thing I wanted from the sony a7 IV was 4K 60p full frame, sadly we didn't get it. Also one thing that I really don't understand is why the camera only has one CF fast port in stead of two because it was the processors that can write on two CF Fast cards. Other than that I will keep shooting on my a7 III and sony a6600 as the new sony a7 IV is not appealing for me to upgrade. The only viable upgrade for me to get 4K 60p is the sony a7s III right now.
sony is pulling a Canon move,,protecting his more expensive bodies with that 4k60 crop :P Also it seems to overheat on 4k24 so maybe thats the reason too
Hey Matti if I have a iPhone 14 pro max and I’m a very beginner photographer and creator, I do this only on vacation and for fun should I buy this camera?
What lens were you using in this shoot? You mentioned the new 70-200 lens, but what others were you using? I have been using the Sony A7rII for several years but I sold it last week and have the IV on order. Looks like the camera that does everything well and I really wanted the new flexible screen. a
Can you do a camera recovery comparison. For example under expose by 3 or 5 stops and correct in post to see how they cope? I think high iso test ship has sailed.
I wish you took her out at night, this is the deciding factor for me among Canon, Black Magic and a couple others because of the low light. What up dude. I am interested in this camera , can't wait to hear your take on it. What wide lens do u recommend
The A74 at 102400 ISO looks great!!! I wouldn’t even be able to tell if everything was filmed with that hahah!!
Haha actually looks really good right???
There's a pretty gnarly magenta hue
Are you watching it on a phone ?
I always thought Sony had better AF than canon. 😳
Very excited for this camera
Feeling kinda good with my R6 right now with the no-crop 4K 60fps

Don't talk about r6 coz r6 sucks heating system. R6 can't even shoot your video 😄

A74 vs the A7SIII, to my eyes the red tones pop out more on the A7SIII, makes me think the A74 has a tad better dynamic range, of course both look fantastic. A74 is better in low light to my eye as well. What an amazing camera. Someday, someday haha.
So the a74 is the new update
This is exactly what I was expecting for the price! A little bit bummed by the crop in 4k60 though
Its just they crippled it . . Even iphone does 4k 120
Hey Matti did you throw a noise reduction filter or anything on those high iso clips? That footage is absolutely insane
Nope nothing! Straight out of camera
Why do cameras never have a 2.7k option? Something in the middle with no crop. That's so frustrating having a 1.5x on 4k60

Which would you pick for video between the A7C and A7IV ?
I Second This Question ! 😩
A7iv for sure if you want to spend a little more. The extra dollars go a long way with 10 bit 422
@@BlakeDavis42 Even With The Crop In ?
I think this is going to be a great B-cam! The FX3 is my main cam and I’ve been using my old A73 as a a B-cam but this will match much better
same here!

Hi Matti! I have 2 lenses for my Sony a6300. That’s a ASPC camera right? Will those lenses fit this Sony a74? Thanks.
An option to shoot at 4K60 Full frame even at 8 bit would have been good..
They want to protect the a7Siii which makes sense. I am still waiting for it the last 7 weeks.
@@Pfagnan it makes no sense. imagine phone companies trying to protect last years phones by crippling this years phones. as tech moves forward everything is supposed to get outdated. its a lazy move by sony.
Plenty of people will just buy another camera brand.
Deal breaker for me. I shoot in 4k60 90% of the time
I’ll be sticking with my A73, can’t beat the price to performance.
@@ConnorLipke I agree when it comes to video. As a hybrid shooter though I think I still take the A73..
Yeah. The 10 bit and flippy screne would be nice but nothing crazy. Im sticking with my A7iii for awhile too
I'm a a7iii user and I'm not so excited to upgrade to this camera.
Thanks for the review Matti. I waited for almost a year for this camera. Very disappointed to hear that 4K 60 frames is cropped.
Email Sony to complain. Maybe a software update for limited 4k/60 full frame
I think I'm gonna put my hands on this and finally get in the world of Full Frame. Yes Claudio do it! *autogenic training*
You hit the nail on the head with this !!
Hey! Thanks for review! Does it has a video recording time limit?
A7iv vs A7C
Which to choose from?
The specs, this camera has it all, awesome AF, great lowlight ability, 33MP, 10 bit 4K 422, and those dials for switching between the 3 modes makes is really versatile. Price is a bummer, but that’s something I can overcome. Biggest problem with this camera is the maximum 5fps with uncompressed RAW and lossless RAW. Common my A7III does 10 fps uncompressed RAW, no idea why they made this limitation, 10fps is the standard for years. With this limitation the price tag becomes a problem.
they had to find a way to cripple it or else nobody would buy the A1, I feel you tho!
I feel like its just so close to an A7SIII that I would just rather get an A7SIII as its slightly better and takes great photos as well, but the price is great as an upgrade from the A7III, a B-cam, or even a first camera.
The background looks more cyan/saturated in the a7iv footage than the a7siii. Example 5:22… is that just from a difference in the grade?
probably, Gerald said the color is in between SIII and A1
Since even GoPro does 5.3k in 60 and 4k in 120 so in reality it should at least be that sadly. The low light is the real only difference. They have to step up the stats there and the in body stabilization if they are going to charge 10x
