As an artist, I'm almost certain that the reason there's so many bald clones is because the artists don't want to spend the time/effort coming up with multiple characters.
I feel like the robots doing art one could have actually been a decent cartoon if they had the people doing miserable corporate jobs. Like, make it a critique on how AI is being used to replace artists instead of just “people be on they phones”
The animation shown is by a guy called Syeve Cutts, he is shown to believe in actually good things and has some very, VERY good points about how society works, but the way he conveys them is... idkhow to describe it. Boomer-y? Tasteless perhaps? He just has a really hard time telling people that phones are a bad thing (they aren't, but the ways companies use phones for are indeed very bad) without sounding like my dad. He has like, one or two poignant shorts that hit the nail in the head, but otherwise it's all well intentioned but poorly made criticisms of society.
@fructiferous Not an official one. The music used is "Comptine d'un autre ete l'apres midi" by Yann Tiersen, which I don't think has an official video but is used as the soundtrack for a few indie animated projects. Hey hey, undergrad artist here! After watching this, I decided to write some tips in case anyone wants to make socially critical content/art/texts/anything but is scared of falling into fake deep. Let’s break down what makes fake deep content: VAGUENESS: The critique is shallow and too broad and relies on the medium (usually cartoons) to make it meaningful. Think of all the book = good; phone = bad ones. REPETITIVENESS: there are overused points in all these that either don’t need more commentary on, or need to be elaborated to be new. Think of all the images with variations of phone zombies. OBVIOUSNESS: The images lack anything visually engaging and dumb arguments down for you to the point of being insulting. No one cares about thing 1 and only want thing 2, so a crowd is gathered around thing 2 while thing 1 suffers alone. ARROGANCE: Most if not all of these come from the assumption that the author is superior to all that, they’re enlightened, that’s why they see through it all. They lack humility, engage with pseudo-nihilism and many times spew hateful discourse. That first animation is full of sexist stereotypes, for example. LACK OF SELF-AWARENESS: many of these end up being what they’re criticizing. Don’t be a sheep, don’t follow society, follow me instead! Don’t care about what other people think, be yourself, as long as you fit what I like! Social media is bad, so I’ll post this on Twitter and spend all day replying to haters! These might be on purpose, or unconscious. BAD TASTE: This is subjective, but many of these are trashy and push people away, including ugly depictions of people’s bodies, gross elements and following the same comic style that either looks bland or disgusting. So, to make actual criticism through art, you can: choose a solid topic, do it in an interesting authentic way, don’t assume your audience is dumb, look into self-criticism and how you take part in the issue you wanna comment on, stay humble, be careful with delivery, make something cool or beautiful for your standards or the standards of your audience, and you’re good to go. Or don’t do any of this, I can’t really tell you what to do.
