When I was a kid (mid-late 90s), my church showed the first 2 (or 3) movies for a movie night and OMG they were traumatizing as hell! I rewatched them as an adult and laughed so much … Gotta love a church showing these films to literal children to scare them towards Jesus.
That's because the rapture is strictly a fundamentalist thing with no scriptural basis whatsoever, and fundamentalism only dates back to the early 20th century. It basically started as a reaction to modern science--especially evolution and geology--challenging a literal reading of the book of Genesis.

It's funny to think of how many people must have had this conversation over the past thousand years, talking about the end times, the rapture, the second coming, and so on and so forth and every single one of them, every single time, lived their entire lives up until the end sure it was always just around the corner, just a few seconds, hours, days or weeks.
