- This video shows the forging of special wrought iron framing chisels we are now offering for sale on our website. These chisels are my own design, a mixture of Japanese and early American framing chisels. They are made of antique wrought iron which gives the most amazing appearance after acid etching and polishing. Very special tools and process, completely unlike anything else in the world.
Chisels are available on our website at mrchickadee.co...

My dad’s dad, my grandpa had a small blacksmith shop behind his rent house.
I used to crank his blower.
Mainly, I was jn the way.
He was a man of few words.
I went by there years ago.
I am not young.
The old frame house is gone.
The shop is gone.
In fact, you would never imagine anything being there before.
I remember.
I miss him terribly.
I know the feeling!🤦🏻♂️😔
i’m sorry for your loss, something similar happened to me where my grandpa had a woodworking shop in the backyard, i would sometimes see what he was up too in there and i have vague memories of playing with his drill press handles. he passed a few years ago and all of the tools were sold. Me and my brother started to turn it into a shop again and there’s a good feeling we get from being in there, unfortunately we will have to move out this summer but his legacy will definitely carry on
Would you be kind enough to share a few more memories, a few more words?
such a shame..I was taught by an old gentleman who was a blacksmith on the yorkshire coal fields. He taught me because I asked him how to make the different types of fire to work the steel..(I was about 6)
I went back a couple of years after I was forced to move away and his shop was gone, the walls and roof were there but everything else was gone including his beautiful polished clay floor.
I'd love to be able to find some of his tools...jeepers that guy knew how to make tools.
My grandpa died two months ago. He was a metalworker at the glider factory in my home town, a master metalworker. He left a lot of his tools in the garage, the drills, angle grinders, welders, files, all that.
He taught me to weld and to solder before he left this world, and he promised me that he'd teach me to use the large stationary drill. This, sadly, is a promise that went unfulfilled. I'd love to learn some of this stuff, just as the way of honoring him.
On some days the prospect of getting to learn that is the only thing that keeps me going. I miss him, and terribly.
Yea! Been too long Mr. Chickadee.
To anyone who is new to this channel, you should see him use chisels in previous videos. He is a master and the shavings are paper thin or thinner. For me it is something truly beautiful to witness. Glad to see you Mr. Chickadee!
thank you
I’ve been watching a channel for years I watch with admiration with your skill you draw us all in. I’m modest wood crafter and I felt compelled to purchase one of your chisels just placed the order. It would be an honor to have something that you actually crafted. Something I hope to hand down to my grandchildren someday.
Wow, thank you!
To anyone who thinks these are expensive I'd like to point out that good Japanese chisels cost thousands of dollars.
Also someone like him will always have demand above supply. Making them expensive makes it worth his time and means he doesn't have to try to satisfy crazy demand
Actually a great set goes for about ¥90,000 ($600 US). His work is always impressive to watch.
That's still expensive to me
On the one hand, this gentleman is a skilled tradesjack, whereas the Japanese are master craftsmen, but on the other, these are art pieces as well as tools.
Exactly. You want cheap? Go to Harbor Freight. You want excellence, you're going to pay for it.
Wow! They are amazing!! Some day I will buy some. BTW...I receive my Scythe tomorrow. My weedeater went out and I decided to try and switch to a Scythe for weedeating. Your channel has always been so wonderful and inspiring!
You will like a scythe once you get used to it. I still use a weedeater for some hard to reach places, and on a friends lot that is rocky. I was lucky enough to have several corded weedeaters and one battery powered unit given to me, so will probably have enough to last the rest of my life.
5:03 Simultaneously forging and rinsing your brush. Very impressive.
lol
Beautiful work, that wrought iron looks so interesting etched.
Has "RUclips" taken a toll on your private life? If so, I understand. However, your channel is so much better than the other trash that is continually thrown in my face tha I scan every day hoping to see something from you. Be well.
No toll, as we just film what we are doing anyway, if we think it will be beneficial for others to watch. (lots goes undocumented) Im happy you enjoy!
Welcome back! Always happy to see a video from you. These chiesels are amazing.
Those are something beautiful. I wish I could afford a chisel that expensive. Maybe one day.
When I was a kid, in the early 80's, my dad got into blacksmithing. I got to spend my summer wandering the railroad tracks looking for abandoned cars (or other sources of quality steel) that had salvageable leaf springs since they are made of spring steel. We would make them into knives with a bellows made from a vacuum and a forge fashioned from a tire rim. A piece of rail was our anvil. Though your setup is nicer, you have the same spirit of creativity. Your videos remind me of those times, thank you.
That is something else! Outstanding piece of art those crafted chisels! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Hats off!
Hi Mr. Chickadee. You were my inspiration to start getting into hand tool woodworking (and associated interests like blacksmithing, scythe use etc.) back in 2019 when I was on the cusp of graduating college and figuring out adult life. This craft has been my source of peace in the most chaotic times since then, and has filled my house with furniture and my garage with tools.
Thank you for doing this and always being dynamic with the videos you create :^)
Im honored to have helped
These are beautifully crafted and you sold them for a very good price great work.
Glad Your Back ! Amazing Chiisels!
Would love an update video to see how the Korean floor has held up and how it’s aged and some other past projects.
Amazing chisels though! They look a delight to use.
can you make a video about wood movement? plz
They look amazing
Mr Chickadee, you truly inspire me. I'm 53 and I am going to learn the blacksmithing from scratch.
you are a true Master
Hurrah!!🌟 Mr. Chickadee decided to fly home
(RUclips) and pay us a visit.
Its been many moons, Sir!!
I'm a 🤔 when it comes to handmade tools.
The Expertise.Time. Patience. Dedication put
forth to create and XLNT piece of work is not
everybody's cup of tea. The end result is to
be admired and you should be Proud.🏆
Truth be told ~ We are in the presence of a Master.
With that said ~ 👍👍👍👍👍💚🙏 ...
thank you
I like how the metal texture looks like wood.
In this XXI century full of (worldwide) shoddy companies and individuals who just seek for fast money (except, of course, in Japan and South Korea) and full of no respect for hand-work as an active meditation, it's always mind-blowing to watch you, Mr. Chickadee, working as honest and smashing craftsmen worked in centuries XVIII and XIX, where handmade tools were (and still they are) the best ones ever constructed.
Thanks so much, gentleman, for your enormous generosity while sharing your unbeatable skills! Each video of you is a gilded homage to self-demanding work.
Hand-forged chisel? FOR RIZZLE?!
Shizzle
Wait... whaaat? You can make beautiful tools like this without a power hammer, CNC, plasma cutter and belt grinder?
Who knew... ;-)
MR CHICKADEEEEE !!! 🤓 Beautiful work as always
I wish you good luck with this new business!
One of my absolute favorite Makers on the Tube. Chisels are beautiful to look at. I am sure they perform as good as they look. Always a pleasure to watch you work.
Is a chickadee , frinstance, like a Blue Jay, or a swallow, or even an Australian Willy Wagtail. I don’t think they’re expensive but I can’t afford one! Love yer art…
Hello @Mr. Chickadee, I have a question on how you keep your hewn timbers from splitting?
Amazing, man... Really stunning chisels! Fantastic work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I've never seen someone make a tool that looks like wood but is in fact metal. they're like a work of art
Beautiful work!
I miss your video's.. Keep em coming
The most specifically made to purpose tongs I've come across. Very nice :-D My grandpa was a blacksmith in The Netherlands so videos like this remind me of the family heritage. Thanks for sharing great work - again.
Thanks for sharing!
i was really wondering were the teeth of my harrow when to laughing
Is there anything Mr. Chickadee cannot do? I have seen no evidence of that as of this date my friend.
I have been watching you since you bucked out the poplar. This, though, is a whole other level of craftmanship. Wow, but wow.
thanks!
wow, just wow
Wow, i've seen lots of cool stuff in this video !! Definitely love the wooden handles for your signature punches i want to make them too. I think you're forging with bituminous coal, be careful with the fire maintenance. Coal only gives warmth when it is glowing (thus already turned into coke), the fresh coal should definitely slowly smoke out any bad stuff first. (usually they put fresh coal on the side and you can water them slightly ... until they are coke) Coal that burns doesn't give any warmth to the iron only radiation heat ;-) ... in the end it looks like you we're doing fine, i just wanted to give you the information to make sure ;-) The Japanese alternating push and pull blower you are using... is it working good for the bituminous coal? Cause i think it is designed specifically for charcoal because charcoal likes to have alternating air flow (it gives more heat). But i have no experience with combining those so i don't know if it works good🤷♂ Have fun forging !!! Next step is welding with sand 😛
Always nice to see one of your videos.
what coal do you use, and do you have a video on starting the coal fire?
You are sold out already in less than 4 weeks? 😪
You sure do have a wide range of skills 🙂. I didn’t understand some of your subtitles. For instance ‘Clay protects steel during quenching’. Why? For what reason? Am I missing something 🙂.
Iron forms an oxide at high temperatures that will flake off the clay is probably there to form a barrier to limit oxygen exposure and keep the surface finishes nicer
Probably so it doesn’t cool as fast, or form scale.
Look it up.
Beautiful, and too bad they are sold out. Will there be more?
all you need now is an abundance of takahahagany
HAVEN'T SEEN YOU IN A WHILE.....HOPE YOU'RE DOING WELL ,EXCELLENT WORK 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👊🏾
Thanks 💯
Glad to see you after a while.
So many questions! When did you start metal work? Why didn't you show us how you build your forge? Where have you been?
Oh ive been blacksmithing for around 10 years now. I did show how to build a forge on our channel, just not this exact one. Ive been busy doing stuff like this around the homestead.
Why would you make a chisel out of wrought iron? < 0.8% carbon is softer than mild steel and can't be hardened. I hope the title is wrong lol
Their laminated, 1.3% steel is forge welded onto the edge, first process shown in the video...this is how all edge tools were made globally, still is in Japan
Love your work, but watching you swinging that hammer with the cut off still in place gave me ghost pains in my fingers!!
Sorry!
On the website, I'm afraid I couldn't find the chisel prices.
there are separate pages for each size
I like the twist it's really nice
its such a good thing that you're bringing these tools into the world! I'm curious about how japanese smiths carve the hollow into the high carbon steel. is this something you intend to try?
Well these days they use a large radius grindstone, before power tools they used a Sen (hand scraper) to carve that out.
joy to watch! price is far too low!!
Beautiful work.
Nice work. I'm a little sad we didn't get to see you use the sharpening wheel you made.
Sorry!
you are fuckinnnn amazing man
What a lovely work. Congratulation for the highest level of craftsmanship!
wonderful
As stated in the overview section, the manufacturing method is based on the Japanese method of making chisels, but the shape is similar to American chisels, which was interesting.
As someone who grew up in the last century watching the craftsmen on PBS, I think you are the 21st century's Roy Underhill.
Wouldn’t be surprised if these sell out quickly. Nice work.
Great job! Impossible Happy to follow such a cool example! How can I contact you via telegram or WhatsApp? I would like to order products!
You're a blacksmith too?! Wow!
Good to see you again, Mr. Chickadee! Semper Fi, brother.
Beautiful work as always. I have certainly missed your videos. I would love one of your chisels, but maybe someday.
Hey Mr. Chickadee,
Now you are a fine blacksmith, as well as a fine carpenter ! 🙂
great idea . your new equipment is cool nice glasses
Wish I could buy a whole set!! Absolutely beautiful, Sir!!!
Beautiful, worth every penny!
You are going to be so busy making chisels. Spectacular tools with a very unique finish.
It sucks to be poor and not be able to plurge money on this, but at least I can watch your inspiring videos for free. Thank you!
This is so strange because this past week, I was telling my son who is getting into woodworking about your channel. Those are beautiful. Thank you, Mr. Chickadee.
I've been using the same set of Stanley chisels for over 40 years. Good stuff lasts so you never really waste any money on it. I have no idea if the ones they make today are any good. If I was to build a log cabin or a post and beam, these you've made would be my first purchase.
Glad to see your content again!
Blacksmith tip, you can stop a lot of vibration by putting a big magnet on the side of your anvil. Hope I could help you like your videos have helped me
Very impressive! Do you make your own charcoal or do you use coke?
Both
beautiful work and a joy to watch the process.
love the handles for your touch marks , thats brilliant
Your use of old hand tools makes me think of my shop too
thankyou for sharing and taking me down memory lane to my early learning days
Beautiful work Sir! Thank you for sharing it.
Where are the prices?
I am sure you built the lathe…are there plans available somewhere?
Roy Underhill has plans in his woodwrights shop book
What happened to that massive German anvil with the slanted side?
Thats it, just the back view.
A thing of beauty. Not in the market for chisels but they would be worth every penny
With out saying a word it,s been awhile
Who made the hallmark stamp?
I filled the chickadee, an etsy store made the Mr C
Just checked your store and I honestly think you're selling these way, way too cheaply for hand forged, hand sharpened chisels. I was expecting at least twice as much.
Thank you, its hard to price, cant be by the hour because they take way too long to make, but they have ZERO value if they dont sell. lol
@@MrChickadee lol yeah I understand completely. I make small things like end-grain chopping boards to sell and it's impossible to sell them at an hourly rate. It would be so high nobody would buy them.
Stunning. Not surprising they are out of stock with a wait list a mile long.
Set of 🐣 chisels, very nice. Stay the course, I 👀 your passion. 🤙
Nice work Mr. C 👍
that was awesome man! thankyou for the new video
Good work. Design fantastic...😂❤
Been missing me some Chickadee time for a while now…..glad to see you again…each time is an experience
Beautifully crafted hand tools that will last a lifetime and be handed down.
That's a real labour of love, and a highly individual tool !
Absolute works of art. An item to be cherished and used.
Great job.
Your "Mr. C" mark on these is terrific!!! 😎✌️
Awesome work man. Very impressive.
Beautiful, work of art but functional tools. Thank you for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it
