“They were trees all along” is my new favourite twist in a story
Maybe the real trees were the friends we made along the way
Alright, here is my unpacking of the lore of this song.
In the beginning we get shots of the road and abandoned city, no signs of recent habitation are visible other than our two main characters, we get the line “wake up, sleepyhead” this will be important later. Not much happens in the first minute and a half, but we do see an hourglass which will also be important later. We also get a lot more shots of the car driving on the empty road re-enforcing the idea of isolation. At 2:05, we get the information that the blonde haired character slept until 1 o’clock, this means that the character has been asleep more and more, as if conserving energy for something.
At 2:20 we get ready for a lyric that seems normal at first but that points to the idea that our blonde haired character isn’t the only victim of whatever affliction they have with the words “suddenly I feel the trees stare right back at me” after that we are told that the blonde haired character “slept even more than before” which shows that the condition is worsening. We also get some spooky distorted audio at 2:43 which will reappear soon. At 3:05 we get the visual of the hourglass visual again, now with all the sand at the bottom and a small tree limb poking out from the sand. At 3:35 we get the knowledge that our blonde haired pal had become twisted and deformed, and we get the same distorted audio in the background. We also get some shots of both characters in a twisted state, in order to contrast the similar shots of both in a Norman fully-human state. We get the visual of the hourglass once more, the tree limbs stretching all over the bottom half of the hourglass, and a white flower attached to the tree limbs, before a red flower appears. We also get a neat corrupted image of both protagonists hugging, but one of them being a mangled tree being.
We are now in the sad part. Our brown haired character talks about having no reason to keep living at 4:55 and talks about how they couldn’t bring themself to burn their friend to end their tree induced suffering. Then, their mangled tree friend try’s to comfort them, and our brown haired character hugged the tree person’s branch, mentioning it as being warm, potentially implying the existence of flesh beneath the bark. At 5:48, we get an image of the tree person’s branch piercing through our black haired protagonist body, and at 6:05, you can really see the guilt in our tree protagonist’s face, with black tears streaking from their eyes. Our black haired protagonist is fine with this, even happy about it as long as it helps their friend. We get the visual of the hourglass again, the tree branches now breaking out of it. We get a little more distorted audio but that’s it
As a side note, the branches of the tree friend have orange leaves, similarly to all of the other trees, implying that they were all once people. That’s just my analysis of the 6.5+ minute song, thanks for reading this absolute unit of a post.

To build on this, while it may not be confirmed by the song, I have a theory on how we get to the starting place in the story.
now the backbone of this is built on the following quote "Mutations and death will not deter my love for you" and the fact that at the end we can see all of the long vine tree things in the city, not just her slowly growing but all of them. and the fact that the camp we see at the start and repeated throughout has initially no vines but as it progresses, they begin to creep in.
this leads me to believe that prior to the start of the story, there was some kind of biological weapon released likely one designed as a herbicide, however, it has unintended consequences. a fast-mutating pathogen piggybacked off the herbicide and quickly mutated to infect humans turning us into plants, my additional evidence likely spread on fresh fruit produce which is how society collapsed so fast, based on the age of the boy less than 10 years (i would say society collapsed maybe 1 year ago maximum however I have no real evidence for this so let's just call it ten years ago.) at the start of the outbreak the two characters found each other after watching their family perish, together and fled the city to the outskirts (likely to a farm that was anti gmo and all that nonsense) that gave them relative safety for a while but eventually she ate something she should not have eaten, and you know the rest from here.
@@elenorebradson4338 it’s an interesting concept, personally my bet would be on the cause being some sort of Crispr type virus engineered to edit plant dna for things like drought resistance or better crop trials, but that it mutated to infect human hosts, and slowly changes them from the inside; I think that would also explain the whole drowsy-ness thing because energy would need to be conserved for such a large change. I defiantly think it’s human caused because a lot of other steampianist songs have horrible things happening because of people and their direct actions.

Personal Interpretation of the Infection that afflicts one of the characters;
So, taking a sort of guesstimate on the infection with the longer haired character(calling them Her), It took 20 days for Her symptoms of sleeping to be longer, maybe needing about 12-18 of sleep from the infection, her faculties shutting down through that withered voice part.
And 30 days in, the symptoms of the infection go critical, Her body is shaking, maybe convulsing cause of the transformation.
Her tongue falling cause we see Her have no mouth in the one shot of us seeing Her face after transformation, Her wood body growing over the mouth.
The eyeballs are swollen maybe cause of the same thing with the infection peeling off and/or parts of her eyes, causing the inhuman colors in her eye(s).
Skin peeling off and hardening, the three layers of skin probably falling off, and the flesh and bones hardening to a wood like body, which seems to be flammable, with the lyrics saying they should've burned them.
The body stretches to inhuman proportions, which could be why the person afflicted would need more sleep, Cause they need to preserve as much energy as possible to grow to that size quickly, also mimicking photosynthesis (This is assuming that She was turning right as our other character comes home, and a few minutes or hours pass before the branch part).
For that one moment where the scabs are in the lyrics, could it be the body's immune system trying to stop the infection from peeling off the skin and scabbing over the peeled parts? Or would it be part of the transformation? Turing scabs into that human-like wood we've seen.
TLDR: The moment you get infected, you have around ~30 days before you turn into a tree and/or tree monster, and there is no way to save yourself, cause ELDRITCH INFECTION. (maybe.)

Damn... I gotta say I'm shocked. I already knew Steampianist makes a lot of horror songs especially since Secrets of Wysteria was my first song I listened to so I anticipated it to later on turn dark. But I expected it to be the usual creepy and unsettling type of song. Instead, what I got was sadness and tragedy... But yeah it was a beautiful song and I absolutely loved it

I think those parts are meant to be metaphorical representations of the short-haired boy's feelings of just taking from the long-haired girl since she was constantly the one giving her part or all to their friendship while he insecurely felt as though he wasn't giving anything. A give and take, if you will.

Stories with this specific theme where people turns into trees are one of my favorite!! On top of being sad and heart-wenching, there's that feeling of people the characters held dear that's "gone" but not really since they're turned into... plants. Alive, there, but they couldn't talk to each other like before anymore. Either the journey must go on leaving their loved ones behind, or staying with them until whatever happens until the actual end of the world ;w;

I've been so obsessed with this song, and love it. It's a new favorite. This gave me the perfect rollercoaster of emotions, as it gradually changed from the opening, to the middle, to the end. I didn't take the "trees" in the literal sense initially, so this went a very different direction in my head before, but I understood after a couple of listens. It's kinda inspiring some art for me as well, and makes me want to do an Animal Crossing animatic, oddly enough lol
