- WHY do all our favorite creators inevitably start a second channel? Is it the pressure? The desire to grow an audience fast? Or is a question of commerce? Now obviously this doesn't cover every conceivable reason to start another channel, nor will these reasons apply to every creator out there... but I suspect it'll apply to a lot of them 🧐

I wonder if you've noticed an increase in nasty comments on the home reno videos. In my experience, the home reno comment section can be brutal...even between commentors.
Oh yea, definitely. Did I cut that part out of my "Assumptions" video? I don't think I did, I think I left it in... it's tangentially related, I guess: I spoke about how there are far more people interested in house renovation in general, so just more eyes on those videos to leave comments, but also because basically *everybody* has lived in a house, rented a house, owned a house, had SOME SORT of experience with houses, so everyone's got opinions.
Basically none of them are asked for or wanted by me, but a lot of people want to give them regardless. But I do find that those are mostly just annoying, not flat out mean (although clearly some of them are, like our Marigold, who seems to live for trying to rip me apart, although I couldn't care less, I just troll them right back!!)

I don’t see why you felt the need to go back track about your abilities. You are a confident person. We know that. You are often found to be telling us about a fault that you have or a mistake that you made. You have every right to tell us what you have done well.
Because I'm not just born with a crazy good business sense... it was acquired over many years and with many mistakes and I think that there's a huge disconnect in our society due in large part to the fact that nobody talks about their mistakes or lessons that were learned along the way. Social media promotes only sharing successes, not downfalls or mistakes, but this is not realistic to the way life is, and I think it's important to be very clear about that!
I figured second channels had something to do with the financial/business part. Thanks for the information.

You're welcome (although of course I have to add the caveat that this is MY personal take on it, and other creators may have other reasons or opinions on the topic, but I feel confident saying that these three reasons probably encompass a large percentage of creators)

Yeah, so excited for the second channel and having you keep me company while I sew! It totally baffles me that people think it’s ok to criticise RUclipsrs. I don’t sit through a TV show I don’t like (most of what's broadcast these days) and then email them to tell them what I hated about it. Move on people, who cares about your opinions. If you don’t like it, move along. Your present is not required! Totally here for the chats, EPP in beautiful scenery and generally keeping me company while I craft and go about my day. Also happy to be an outlier lol! I quickly subbed when you said the compilation videos would be on this channel so I would get notified when they go up. I’d love to have some deeper dives into things behind the scenes I think that would be cool. I actually think the sewing table was the first one YT showed me of your channel and then I fell in love with your eclectic style and content. As I watched this one I was actually hand seeing an EPP piece I’m working on at the moment. I would love to see the fabric unboxing and regret I didn’t get a chance to send something in, I’ll just have to wait hopefully for the next time you do one. I can’t wait to see what kinds of fabrics people sent from all over the world, how cool that must have been to see where all they were coming from. I actually did sign up for the Craftys membership and will probably use it for a while more because I’ve been wanting to learn how to draft some blocks based off my body to modify some vintage patterns that are too small for me. The sewing table build brought me to your channel and I've been watching ever since. My husband and I build my own custom sewing table because of it! I also once owned and renovated a 1925 bungalow, so the house videos interest me. I'm interested in lots of things, so I'm sure I'll enjoy the new channel, too!

This speaks to me. The original intent of my channel was to focus on recycling and upcycling (specifically, clothing). I found that people love haul videos. So, I uploaded a couple of those. I'm also a planner (out of necessity...ADD requires me to see everything written). So, it was natural of film some of my planning. I feel, now, like maybe I need more than one channel?

Yes please on the fabric opening video! I love the idea of someone getting fabric from all over the world. I just want to see what types of fabrics you got from different places because I've only been out of the US twice (Canada & Bahamas, the latter sucking badly due to sandflies).
Yes please on the renovation extras. I love learning about things I don't have much experience with like when you talked about the radiators when you were installing the new ones. Even if I don't remember the information, I will remember you talked about it and I can refer a friend if it comes up in their life and they're looking for examples.
Background noise, always. I have bad thumb joints (all of us kids have them - thanks mom) so anything that can distract me from that pain while I'm washing dishes very slowly is wonderful. 😂
I'm an information junkie. You never know what jewels of information you're going to get so tangents are a plus for me.
Hopefully, you'll remember that some of the newer subscribers came in under older videos so if you asked people to chime in on an older video - well, we may not have known what you know now. I hope that makes sense.

I have only been subscribed to your original channel for maybe a couple of months. Pretty sure the algorithm sent me there because I follow another RUclipsr who is renovating a 140 year old farmhouse. He also has a second channel which has entirely different content. As with him, I subscribed to your second channel as soon as I saw this. I enjoy all kinds of creative channels, but equally as important as content is the personality of the creator, which you have oodles of! Screw the negative commenters. Some people are mean just to be mean. Bring on the fabric unboxing! I'm here for all of it.
I love you and Phil working together and I enjoy your creativity with “junk”. I have watched many video of people who upcycle “junk” that would never make it into my “junk filled house. This was really interesting. The thought of having to sit in front of a camera gives me the screaming fontads, so I had really been curious about why anyone would ever consider doing it twice as much. Also, I’ve recently discovered that longer comments are beneficial to creators for some reason, so I thought I’d try to leave one extra sentence.

Rewatching for your hours. Lol I actually paused to read the negative comments this time, and haha jokes on them for the ones about you talking, because I love you talking to us about what you're going to do. Really appreciated this transparent lesson into the "why" of second channels, and how clearly you shared how we can support this new channel! Also, just gotta say, I always look forward to seeing the edit time info at the end of the video. I am interested to learn if this more eclectic collection of videos will also have lower edit times because they're more casual/less curated/less scripted.
Almost certainly, that was part of the hope with the lowering of the pressure and expectations (although I do still have certain standards, so it'll probably still be over-produced for what it is... I struggle with that lol)

Im one of those people who needs background noise. Most episodes I'll watch intently the first time and then I will replay later just to have familiar noise in the background for work or chores or sleep. Keeps me from having to deal with big noise changes and jumpscares when I am trying to just not be alone.
I will sometimes put videos on the in background too, but also only if I've already actually watched them first!

I’m in the middle of my own reno & found your 120 year old house sight unseen video. Been a subscriber ever since. For me, it’s refreshing to see that you are definitely true to yourself. I like the multi content where it could be house reno, reinventing furniture, reusing cast off finds, exploring neighborhood, etc. keep up the great work! I appreciate it. That was interesting. I'm not in the you tube game, but I do understand what you have said. We all need to make a living, business is business. I must admit, I prefer crafting videos to renovating ones, but for some reason I watch all of them. I do miss the crafting ones, so I am excitedly waiting for the renovations to get a move on so you have space for the crafty ones. That's not a criticism, just my nerdy craft mind. I think I really like how you approach things no matter what it is and I usually follow people I like, so outlier it is.

I would actually argue that's your brand would be "do-it-yourself" and that all of your things fit into that overall homesteader viewpoint. However I can see what you mean that not everyone would see it that way and i appreciate that you understand that this is a business. (I especially appreciate it having been privy to too msny of my favorite youtubers melting down under that realization.) That said, I would adore a fabric opening session. Haul videos are the best and haul fabric videos are the absolute best!
I don't know about homesteader, I don't feel like my content is at all homesteading, but for sure DIY in a way, if you open the category of DIY up to include a lot of sewing 🤣 Seriously though, my content is unified by a few key elements, it never was completely all over the place, but the traditional advice would be ONLY SEW. NEVER DO ANYTHING THAT ISN'T SEWING. Even better: sew ONLY clothes.... or ONLY bag. Or only ever do quilting. The idea being floated years ago was to be very, very narrow in the scope of your content (and that's boring!!)
