Raised in Victoria. Grew into an adult in Byron. It shaped how I raised my kids in Queensland. I was there from 92 until 97. My sister still lives there.

Fantastic description , pretty well all bases covered . I've been here since '72 , known Dick since '75 and been working in and around the town since '74 . People ask me why i live here , well this is why -- couldn't have said it better myself . We are thrust out into the ocean here , surrounded by the Pacific . My life has been amazing with the experience i have had , an incredible location to raise my family and see my sons take their young lives out to the wider world and be able to prosper from such a well rounded exposure to the people and the place that Byron & surrounds have become .
I spend half my life in the Philippines these days pursuing my love of tropical waters and the magnificent culture and a lot of people wonder why i have not relocated there - well ! this is why . The Tweed & Brunswick Valleys and the bay they empty out into offer the best of Australia in my opinion and thats why it is my home .
On a more controversial point , i think Queensland border should be Cape Byron , the most easterly point, but i am biased being a 5th gen Qld'er haha, i was squeezed down here by the explosion that became the Gold Coast and Joh's draconian laws of the early '70s , i have a sense of freedom here that is hard to find .

I moved here for permaculture principles in 2016 after attending a course in the channon in 2012, then returning to wwoof in 2014. In 2018 i became a manager of an organic farm, but took several steps in a completely different direction after 2019 to go into security working nights. Bizzare twist of fate really. But every day i go for a walk in the afternoon around here im always overwhelmed with how blessed i am and this place is.

God bless Byron Bay and protect the area from large-scale development. Remember that "they take paradise and they put up a parking lot (car park)."

There has been a long battle for the soul of Byron waged these last 30 years. Sadly the money has won and the people who made this area wonderful and interesting - the alternates, artists, hippies and dissidents can no longer afford to live here. There are currently 400 single mothers with kids living in their cars here. Its tragic. Richer people appropriated alternate culture but didn't invest in community. Instead of sharing resources they hoard them. You can't find a rental if you are working class, but you can pay $200 a night on air bnb. Why aren't we chaining ourselves to council chambers as one by one our elders are homeless and our friends are forced out. Do the local working poor and homeless have to dress like koalas to be saved as yuppies step over us to get their turmeric lattes?! Shame on you council. Not even one homeless shelter here. Maybe stop paying Rangers to harass the homeless and open one? Chill and love are hypocrisy if you can't care for your most vulnerable.

I love the towns attitude to preservation and limiting build heights in the area, really we desperately need this in all places in Australia because some councils are just a bunch of bastards in the way they green light developments and other things. The hunter valley is a prime example. Can you believe some people think high rise buildings are a necessity? sick of living around a bunch of fucking plebs who'd rather live in concrete boxes

How outlandish that a woman with a child surfs! Thought there's some chemical reaction that occurs in women once they birth a child that physically precludes them from surfing

I guess it's all about perspective. I perceived his comment as very encouraging and supportive to mothers who surf. Which stands in the way of any kind of social stigma that may hinder mothers from doing what they truly love to do. In Byron, everyone of all walks of life, lives and "freely" pursues their passions without fear of judgement. As opposed to many other places in Australia where, sadly expression of oneself is looked down upon.

As someone who spends too much time in Byron, i dont get it, its a shithole and boring unless you surf.
