I’m an art teacher in Michigan in the US, we have more ceramic teachers who get silicosis of the lungs from not wearing respirators. You are doing the right thing. What a great example for all of us….
"I'm a ceramic artist" "ooh, what do you make?" "dust, mainly" It is a real problem. I even have the same respirator! And it's not just the clay, the glazes potentially have some toxic minerals in them too and tend to be crushed even finer.
I’m just sitting here trying to imagine what the original artists would think of your beautiful work! I’ll bet he or she never imagined what you’ve done with the designs when they made those old pipes. I’m sure they would be proud.🐝❤️🤗
What a fun surprise in my feed! Lovely! It would be fun to make a board game “the marvelous world of mudlarking” and have those as some of the game pieces!
OMG...this was outstanding on so many levels. The idea was remarkable. The process of how to design was brilliant. The choices of colors made the impressions almost look like toile fabric...especially the schooners! Ladies, you have done such a great endeavor. I feel so blessed to have been allowed to share the process...I can't believe it!?! Your videos are high quality and your home has so much charm and serenity. Thank you a million times. I had to under go surgery...yuck! I am having a wonderful recovery and haven't had to use any pain killers until today...break through pain involving muscle tissue on my left side only. This was just the right medicine....yay, Team Alex and Gail!
I pray for a speedy and complete recovery for you, Juanita. : ) I agree Gail and Alex videos, along with several other channels in the mudlarking community, are always soothing to the soul. : ).
Frankly I was a little skeptical about how interesting the outcome of this project would be. Wow! The finished products were beautiful. Your creative concept was brilliant! You've made such wonderful historical connections. Artists spent time so many years ago designing their ideas to place on ordinary, disposable objects that, at the time, may not have even been appreciated. Your efforts have now honored those men and women from the past with such beautiful new objects that will now live on for many more years into the future. You both should be proud of your work.
I love those. The thistle, the little rose, the fish made from the “scaled” pipe, the Shamrock, the ship, can’t even pick a favorite! They would make awesome pendants or keychains
Dear lovely Northern Mudlarks, this is beautiful! But as someone who’s worked with clay for decades here’s a few tips: basically sanding is a last resort in clay work, and as you know terribly hazardous to your health, people die from COPD and silicosis because of even not mopping down their studio several times a day, without sanding. So masks was great to see. But you are approaching clay as if it were silver, and it’s not. The beauty of clay is you can save all that time and awful samding by making your pieces the thickness you like from the get go, and refining the shape and edges when the clay is ”leather hard” or just before that stage, using simple cutting tools, mirettes, scalpels etc. When a piece is dry it should be finished in shape, and minimal if any sanding at all nessecary. It’s also ALOT more time consuming amd wasteful of material sanding massively small pieces like this. Another hot tip for you two is to buy and try out paper clay. Paper clay is porcelaine clay mixed with lots of very fine cellulose fiber, it’s high firing, and the result is that of fine bone china, with that same sort of translucency. Unglazed it looks almost like paper, and glazed with a thin coat of translucent shiny glaze really shows the delicate china. I think you’d fall in love with this clay for several reasons: it’s perfect for unusually thin or small pieces, as the cellulose content makes it more durable than regular clay in thin dimensions, it’s also the only clay you can keep adding to and building on, even when fully dry, and you can adhere wet to dry, bone dry to dry and wet etc and go on as you like, no risks of cracking etc. You can make the thinnest ”paper lantern” that will chink lile white china, scatter rice grains onto your thin slab and roll out as thin as the rice, then once bisque fired with tiny holes where the grains were you can dip your piece in glaze and once fired get semi translucent ”windows” in the holes just like the centuries old rice grain china from the Far East. Your colored underglazes come out brilliantly too. It’s also not great for dry sanding as the fibers will resist and ”bunch up”, running a wet finger around will smooth it out instead. Give it a try! Oh and btw because the fibers combust at bisque it’s also very low weight. It’s great for pressmoulding and tiny sculpture too. Thanks for wearing masks. But save yourself all that trouble by working with damper clay (no sandpaper). If you find thr edges want to dry quicker that the rest of your tiny slab try drying them all on a piece of paper on a tray wrapped in a plastic bag instead for a more uniform dampness to the clay body. I realize there’s a point to making only bisque fired pieces (if that’s what you’re doing?) as I imagine the oipes where done that way to save money in production. For that matte effect. But you could get that too with the ceramic paper clay (not to be confused with non ceramic paper clay for kids crafts), and I’m certain you’d go bonkers for it! I love your videos, the beautiful landscapes and your darling creations, I’m currently back to working in silver myself for the first time since my late twenties! Thank’s for the inspiration! 🙏💕💕💕💕
This was such a brilliant idea, making ceramics from pipe bowls. They turned out really well. Great to see you midweek and your garden looked lovely. Thank you for sharing.

Oh they turned out beautifully. The ship and the colourful fish are my faves. Well done once again girls 👍🏼👏👏
Oh my goodness those little tablets are beautiful! You can really see the details of the designs that were missed before. I love the ones with the flowers, and you have painted them all beautifully. Brilliant and unexpected video, thank you Ladies 😀 x
I love your art projects, as well as the peaceful background music and serene scenic images often interspersed throughout your videos. Watching you two always brings a smile to my face. Thanks!
