I'm not really sure. I've replaced rechargeable phone Ni-Cd batteries with Ni-Mh with OK results. I think the Ni-Mh batteries like a little different charging profile than Ni-Cd; but I guess they would probably work OK.

I was left with this strange feeling though; like I still want to unlock this mystery about how to replace the battery and get this thing working again.

There is some electronic circuitry for the charging, motor control, and power monitor. Hooking the battery up backwards could damage the circuitry. Because Norelco soldered in the battery, I'm guessing that they didn't add any diodes to safeguard against installing the battery backwards. I don't know if that condition is permanent or not.
