For bread, use what you like. I prefer whole wheat or multigrain, but whatever you like is good. For how many meats, it is typically bacon plus 2 others. As BattleChemist points out, not even the bacon is required. In Saratoga, NY, the Saratoga Clubhouse claims to have originated the club sandwich, and that “club” is just shorthand for clubhouse. That's why some people refer to a club sandwich as a clubhouse sandwich. A club sandwich or clubhouse sandwich, is a sandwich consisting of three slices of bread (traditionally toasted), sliced turkey or chicken, fried bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo, pickles ... A California Club Sandwich adds sliced avocado. 🥪 🥑😋

I live a short distance from Saratoga Springs and I've had the club sandwich from the Saratoga Clubhouse at the flat track many, many times. Just about every restaurant within a 100 mile radius offers a club sandwich, including many of the higher end places. They'll offer it if they serve lunch or on their bar/pub menu. I have to say that I've never had a club sandwich with pickles IN the sandwich. You'll usually get a dill pickle spear or some bread and butter pickles along side. There have been many versions of this sandwich since the original appeared and I do enjoy a ham, mixed meat, or chicken salad club from time to time, but for me, the classic, made with in-house roasted turkey breast will always be my favorite. 😊

I forgot to mention that the reason people put mayonnaise on the bread facing the sandwich or in between the sandwich is because that only is it used for lubricant, so the sandwich is not dry while trying to swallow it, but because it forms a barrier between the bread and anything moist like the tomatoes. Mayonnaise is made out of oil so you could use butter to protect the bread also but in the United States, we use mayonnaise. If we didn’t use that, and if we didn’t eat the sandwich right away in about 15 minutes to a half an hour the bread would be all soggy and gross. The mayonnaise protects the moisture from hitting the bread and making it icky.

We also have and made what is called a Po' Boy Sandwich. This is another sandwich that is made different almost everywhere. In the 1920's Depression-Era it was served to workers that couldn't afford a full sandwich, so this would be a one piece of bread sandwich or half roll with meat toppings and sometimes some form of sauce. We make our Po' Boy Sandwiches (sometimes called an Open-Faced Sandwich) with beef bar-b-que (called bbq for short) or Manwich using hamburger buns and since they are cheap, we can use both sides of the buns. Now this is also made with Texas-Style Toast Bread (that isn't toasted until you toast it, ha, ha). Not to get your mind swimming too much, but some of the best American-Style French Toast is made with Texas-Style Toast Bread and powder sugar put on top of it. Then you add the maple syrup!

In America we have tons of different club sandwiches; I know this because I made them. Basically any "Club Sandwich" is any kind of meat with your choice of cheese you can think of that has no bones in it and the first (but last to be added) will be the bacon against the toast, then tomatoes so your lettuce does not wilt against the hot bacon (unless you used cooled cooked bacon then the lettuce can go against the bacon, and yes we use head or iceberg lettuce, last. We offered our clubs on White, Wheat, or Rye Bread, but traditionally White Bread Toast You can use something called chicken fried steak (deep fat- or air-fried) add your cheese immediately so you get that cheese melted, toast, then added your bacon. tomatoes, then lettuce (which even thought it is called a BLT. Most people here eat the meat layer on the bottom and the BLT on the top part. I was also trained to bake my bacon in the shape of "Vs" so you can put at least 4 pieces on the BLT and not have to worry about it coming out of your sandwich. The other reason you bake it it that you can use a baking screen under the bacon so the fat will automatically go off the bacon plus it makes that good crisp bacon. Keep that bacon grease if you want to try white gravy (nothing to do with the sandwich, but great for white gravy)! You just need to pour the bacon grease over a metal-type mesh so you can keep the bacon grease but not have bits of bacon in it; unless you want to keep the bacon bits and grease for a gravy to make a rue, but has to be used immediately as if you keep the bacon bits in the grease you can keep covered after cooled, for a very long time. We used mayonnaise or Miracle Whip immediately after the toast was done, so it would soften one side of the toast as cooled toast with mayonnaise added after just leaves crumbs all over you. We made tuna or chicken salad clubs, again, almost any type meat with cheese on the lower level as the next level of the BLT makes it a "Club Sandwich". I also still make Croissant-Type Clubs; not a true club, but the bacon, lettuce and tomato are put on it. I just cut my store-bought huge croissants in half then cover (depending who in my family is eating them) add either Miracle Whip on the bottom half of the croissant and yellow mustard on the top (I don't like it so I don't put anything on my croissant halves as they are soft to start with and have butter in them. Take two pieces of long-style turkey or just add turkey slices where there are at least two layers of turkey slices, add 4-6 pieces bacon (again I use the V-shape as they fit the croissant even better on top of the turkey, add one to two slices of your cheese of choosing, Take two pieces of ham put them over the bacon and cheese, add a good amount of iceberg lettuce, then add three to four slices of tomatoes, add your top part of the croissant.. Put two sandwich-picks into the Croissant, cut the middle of the Croissant Club Sandwich in half, to make it prettier I cut it at a slant. I do not like smoked turkey or ham, so I use store-bought, oven-baked turkey and extra-lean premium cooked ham. As with any sandwich/club sandwich you can make them anyway you and your family like them. I make approximately two croissant sandwiches per guy in my family (so more than a pound of food with both sandwiches) and usually only one for women, halves for kids. I go through 24 croissants, 2 pounds of ham and 2 pounds of turkey, 72 pieces of bacon, 6 large beef-steak-type tomatoes, two heads of lettuce and sometimes a pound and a half of sliced American Cheese! That feeds about 12 to 15 people depending on how they want their croissant sandwich made. This is a big hit with my family as we eat these after church and before or during us watching our beloved Denver Broncos! I serve my croissant sandwiches with the choice of chips my particular family wanted; usually Lays Original, Ruffles, or Doritos Nacho Cheese Chips. Then after the game I would make fried biscuits as dessert. No one went away hungry! Ha ha! I don't know of any Portuguese foods. We can buy about any type of food in America at our bigger grocery stores, so maybe you can show us some of your foods from your country. (Maybe you have already done that.)

I haven't had a club since summer, since I am very picky about my tomatoes and only eat the ones I grow or if I can find an heirloom one at the grocery store. When I make them I don't use that much meat. I use two slices of ham and two slices of turkey and only enough bacon to cover the bread. I also put mustard on the middle piece of toast instead of mayo, which is how I've always had it served to me at a restaurant. The lettuce shown in the video is green leaf lettuce, which I don't find particularly flavorful, but better than Romano. I make it with iceberg because it tastes better. Regular white bread is what it is traditionally made with.
My husband and I used to split a club sandwich and get an extra side order of fries because the clubs were so filling the restaurant we got them at we didn't each need to get one. If you make it like this, you may want to just split it with your wife or skip making fries to go with it. Maybe you should find a nice healthy American salad of some sort to make after that. Although, I am still waiting on those cinnamon rolls. Yeah, the salad can wait until after the cinnamon rolls.

If I made it for me, I would make it 1 layer, but you would probably have to make it 2 layer or else everyone would scream... lol. Buy normal sliced meat... I would not cook the meat from beginning either. Also you do not have to put all that bacon on either... 1 layer is sufficient. This recipe was developed for a restaurant, so that is why it is so extreme. I have never had a Club Sandwich, but it looks delicious.

The club sandwich is extremely popular, and it actually shows up on menus across the US. By the way, we call any three-bread-slice sandwich a "double-decker."
    Club sandwich preparation tips/trivia:
Mayo goes on all toast sides that touch other ingredients. It's a structural thing - together with the toothpicks, the mayo acts as a food glue to help keep the sandwich together.
Always salt and pepper your tomato slices, but they don't have to be quite as thick as in the video.
Iceberg lettuce is the standard, due to its satisfying crunch and general availability, but other leafy greens can be used. Bibb lettuce is a popular susbtitute.
Cheese is usually cheddar. While the club is definitely an American creation, DO NOT use American cheese slices. That is the saddest form of club sandwich. Avoid.
Bacon is required, but the choice of meats and variety is up to you. Turkey, ham, and chicken are the most common options.
Cutting the sandwich into 4 triangles with frilly toothpicks is also a must... it's just the way clubs are always served.
While fries are a popular side item, other options like potato chips or salad are common.
In general, the club sandwich is the BLT's fancy older brother. It's also a more filling meal due to it basically being 2 sandwiches in one.
I hope you make this at some point. Your videos are a delight. 😊

The greener a lettuce is the more nutrients it has in it. Iceberg lettuce is about 50% water. Romaine lettuce is the most nutrient dense. It really depends on the dish youre making though. If you make tacos, you want iceberg because it gives a little bit of dampness to your taco without making it soggy. If youre making a caesar salad, you want romaine because its generally moderately healthy (depending on the salad dressing you use or if you even use dressing).

    Since you asked:
The last time I had a CLUB sandwich was back in September. Mine was closer to the original, using rotisserie chicken. (CLUB is an acronym for Chicken and Lettuce Under Bacon.)
"Better" than a BLT is a tricky question, because it all depends on what I'm hungry for. Sometimes I just want a basic fried egg sandwich on buttered bread. Sometimes I want to go all out and make a goyim Cecil - that's ham, melted cheese, caramelized onions, mayo and mustard on the bottom bread, barbecue sauce on the top. It's named after the Jewish deli where I first had a kosher version of it.
The CLUB is just one in a rotation of a vast array of sandwiches I make at home, as is the BLT.
I think after you make a CLUB, you should react to the Philly cheesesteak. That's a classic for a reason, and surprisingly simple to make.

Spicy mustard is a nice added touch for a club sandwich. A club is a basic American lunch option from a diner or as a packed lunch. A club is just a meat sandwich wearing a BLT as a hat. Plenty of ways to do it. Much of "American" food that is now a classic is from the heydays of industrialization (packing the husbands lunch before heading off to the factory) and using new methods of preservation such as refrigeration, American cheese (which lasts longer and is cheap but isnt as good) and Miracle Whip which is a long lasting store bought alternative to real home made mayonnaise.

A club sandwich is a classic and I am sure you would love it, it has a lot of flavor and texture. I like mine toasted but I have eaten many that weren't toasted. My suggestion is that you make one toasted (toast the bread first then make the sandwich) and one on untoasted bread and see which one you prefer. If you like a sandwich that is a meal, this is it. Use whatever kind of cheese you like in your club, here it would usually be cheddar or swiss, maybe even pepper jack. You don't need to get smoked turkey, but I would say get real turkey breast not lunch meat type...same with the ham. Buy real ham and real turkey breast at the deli or meat section of your grocery store. I like the iceberg lettuce but for a video, the green is a much more colorful contrast to the red tomato so perhaps that is why he is using it. Go ahead and load on the bacon. It is just one meal one time. Your first club sandwich should be the perfect one. Just eat half of it and save the other half for your wife. NO KETCHUP!!! You want the flavors to be pure on a club sandwich. You can't compare this and the BLT, once you taste this you will understand that they are different sandwiches. A BLT showcases the bacon and this showcases a combination of a turkey and bacon sandwich with a classic ham and cheese. We put tomato and lettuce on most of our cold meat sandwiches and sometimes even on tuna salad or egg salad sandwiches. Usually some potato chips or fries and a dill pickle spear on the side. It is not too much, it is a meal not a snack. Eat half of it and give the other half to your wife. Don't skimp the first time. After that you can alter it but for your first try, make it the right way. You are a cooking channel where you try new and exciting tastes...Go For It, there is only one "first time" for everything. Wait until you try a French Dip or a Patty Melt. Those are great sandwiches as are Ruben Sandwich or Hot Pastrami sandwich on Rye Bread. We have a lot of different sandwiches here. Americans seem to love sandwiches.

Some people do a club sandwich with turkey, ham and roast beef, and some are turkey, ham and bacon. I don't necessarily say a club sandwich is better than a BLT, just different. A club is always 3 pieces of bread and sauce between every layer. They are both delicious and you definitely must try one. The more meat, the better!

My favorite sandwich is the reuben. It's not for everyone because it has sauerkraut, but there is a variant called the rachel that replaces the sauerkraut with coleslaw.
There is a restaurant near me that makes another variant of a reuben where they make it a double decker and add a knackwurst on the second layer. I love it!

The classic club sandwich is a stack of THREE slices of toast, TWO or more types of meat (like bacon and thin deli turkey), lettuce, tomatoes and mayo, and sometimes a slice of American cheese. Today there are endless versions of a club sandwich. Here in California it's usually 3 slices of sour dough toast, delicious roast turkey breast, crispy bacon, avocado, mixed greens, tomato, Monterey Jack cheese, and mayo. Depending on the area and restaurant, a chef might make up his own recipe...like gourmet olive spread, pepperoncinis, provolone, sundried tomatoes, and baby spinach leaves.

You can use your cold cut turkey breast or smoked turkey breast and not have to buy a turkey breast and cook to use. It’s very easy to make.
