The 2 tiers we saw early on 2002 are actually the current tier 2 and 3 tiers. Tier 1 is built below ground level. This was also a great way of getting the stadium closer to the pitch and increasing capacity.
And also to save the work of rebuilding the stadium
It's crazy how much they dug out from the ground to add in another tier of seats and make it so pitch wasn't miles away. Really clever engineering.
Everybody and their mother is doing these tricks to get rid of running tracks and increase capacity. Even in Latin America.
Clever peeps about
For example, the monumental river stadium
didn't know that the etihad actually had athletic track
Tbh football stadiums with athletic track looks trash
It was initially built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
@@kingsg2358 That's true except the Berlin Stadium with the iconic blue track.
@@largechips Explains why there is high jump material, Discuss/hammer throw net, Discuss Circle and the measuring field for the Javelin throw .
@@blerimdzmaeli3564 yes Berlin stadium is truly an iconic one also stadiums like that should be preserved because they have lots of history behind them.
They have done a very good job adapting it.
I lived next door to it as a kid I saw it being built I remember the big yellow screens with commonwealth games on them .. it’s now 20 years ago 😳

If you didn’t know you would never guess that this stadium was originally for track & field. How Man City have managed to make it look like a normal football stadium is amazing, shame West Ham couldn’t pull it off with the Olympic stadium as that ground still looks like a athletic stadium
thanks to arab , they need to built their statue though as legends of the club
It looks that way because it’s meant too. Pretty sure that was part of the deal when they took over.
It was all part of the design from the start. Well thought out for the commonwealth games and then long term for city
@@PongandMong Man City moved to the stadium before they became owned by their current owners.
@@PongandMong Yeah but they bought the stadium in 2003.
This Stadium is one of our favourites we have worked on. The roof scape is just different and shows what is possible with our product 🙌😍

Makes me feel nostalgic and old. The stadium has evolved a lot over 20 years
Still looks very modern
Lucky to have experienced both Maine Road and now the Etihad. We continue to grow as a club and can't wait for the redevelopment to finish. Going to look even more amazing. MCFC OK
We're Citehhh Super Citehh from Maine Road 💙💙💙💙
I was 16 when Maine Road went down, i was very exited about our new ground, it took a long time for it feel like home! Old stadiums are the heartbeat of a club😥
Have only been twice once to watch England friendly and concert I have to say it's dam good looking stadium that built in greater Manchester think united need to step up some really.with city actually having a stadium that been built in Great Manchester no other team from greater Manchester has
We can't make our stadium better than it is rn because it's right next to a railway and a canal
Converted Commonwealth Games Athletics Stadium, moved here from Maine Road, getting rid of the running track was a good move..
can you imagine if they never removed the track
They always intended to remove the track. If you look at the pictures from 2002, there are only 2 tiers. The current tier one was buried under the track, to be dug out when it was converted to a football stadium.
@@magiera92 Football stadiums with running tracks are awful
I went to the common wealth games at Manchester the day we went was out most won medals at that games Paula Radcliffe and johnathon black I think also took gold. the ends were open and pitch lowered after the games. If I remember rightly.

Seems a smaller san siro if you change the roof
I promise this isn’t a dig at City’s stadium, but the last expansion they did looks really ugly. It has exposed steelwork on the inside of the stadium, the roof doesn’t match and it looks all round unfinished. Which is a shame because the Etihad is a nice stadium.
basically every single English stadium has roofs which look nothing like each other
They just have to do the same with the other side. Then make all the roof colour match. Boom it looks good again
I agree, before it was smooth and seamless, but now it doesn’t blend very nicely
I agree, on the outside the expanded stand sticks out like a sore thumb, hopefully in the future the space inbetween the stands on the 3rd tier are filled with screens, just like at the other end

I had no idea Ethiad Stadium had athletic track and I'm glad it has been removed. It looked like one of those horrible and old italian stadiums
how can they remove the running way
They replaced it with seats. 그들은 달리기 차선을 좌석으로 대체했습니다.
@@Rabidanti And the football pitch is several meters lower than the athletic pitch was.
A professional football stadium should not have running way
What the fucks a running way
Athletics track was removed the day after the commonwealth games and 6m deep excavation to construct the lower seating bowl. New North stand also constructed. Athletics track doesn't work in a football stadium where fans demand to be right up to the pitch edge to create an intense atmosphere.
How did they get rid of the athletic track??
They made every City player and backroom staff go out with a shovel and some grass seed to fix it....Joseph Kevin Keegan was foreman.
how did they get rid of the running track?
Dig down. The lower tier is below ground level

Also known as the City of Manchester stadium
Belleza 😍
The council house ! 🏠 I heard them taking the credit for being part of Britain's new football stadia ! The Emirates , spurs stadium , Riverside , Reebok , King Power Et Al , when Manchester council built it for the commonwealth games , when it was over citeh rented it until the oil barons came along ! 🤦🤮
How come they didn’t show how it looked before 2002? It used to be called Mayne Rode and the stands were more ‘squared’ rather than a bowl. They knocked it down for the olympics.
Maine Road was a few miles away in Moss Side. It's now a housing estate. The new staduim was built to hold the Commonwealth Games, before being handed to City who paid for it's conversion into a football ground.
Maybe because it was a different stadium mate, hence "Etihad Stadium" through the years.
Because it's about the ethiad not maine road a completely different stadium in a different place 🤦♀️
Fucking embarrassing comment...and I ain't even a City supporter.
Richard....ffs - Main Road, was a different stadium and it was only demolished after City moved into this new stadium after the Commonwealth games- not the same site and nothing todo with the Olympics.
It's a good thing they got rid of the athletic track. No football stadium should have that.
The running track couldn't stay regardless, the lower tiers are where it used to be when they put the pitch below ground level
Yes it was designed for the single athletics event Commonwealth games 2002 then conversion to football mode for 2003. Manchester council knew it would be a white elephant if left in athletics mode so had agreed to lease to MCFC after conversion. In my opinion it was a great solution. Capacity was increased from 38000 athletics to 48000 football.
