The older I get the more I realise this movie is a masterpiece. The cinematographer, pacing , dialog , acting, storytelling , special effects …just everything is amazingly well done to an extremely high standard. A true work of cinema art.

It is maybe one of the top action movies of all time, and barely any CGI except t 1000. This is panned by critics as a masterpiece, James Cameron knows what he is doing. The Bar scene too, they hold up because they are written live shots
I remember when I saw it as a teenager, I was only 14 years old, I arrived late to the cinema the day it premiered in my city that summer of 1992, I remember it perfectly as if it were today, I was lucky that there was a free seat in the front row, I saw a a million times and I never get tired of seeing it in a million years it will still be like the first day James Cameron I thank you a million for filming this marvel with all my heart
This was the peak of the franchise. This scene alone will be hard to top. The cinematography, the score, the stunt work, the special effects and the shot gun flip. This has it all. Totally sets the stage for the vibe of the whole movie.
I really don't get why the latest films are so much worse in comparison. Like.. Are they lost their skills in writing and direction and only rely on cdi now? Old Arnold doesn't intimidate anymore sadly. The original films are much more grounded and realistic with underlying horror vibe, especially the first movie, which is basically the horror. The last films feels like a action comedy or something. I thought that it can't be worse than Genesis, but omg the dark fate or whatever is even worse and the inclusion of Linda Hamilton only brings sadness to see how she and Arnold aged and it's not the same anymore. The new terminator guy doesn't feel like a threat at all, more like a punching bag. Like everything feels so cheap compared to the T2. T3 is not a bad movie in comparison to the last ones.

T2 was an action movie that strived to create a believable coming of age story for john and to tie up as many loose ends as possible by the end. It was made with the intent of telling a story filled with heroism, fatherhood, and to depict sarah connor as a woman suffering from ptsd as she struggles to come to terms with working with a machine that looked like the one that killed her baby's daddy. now contrast that with dark fate. They replaced john with a woman for political reasons(feminism). Linda hamiliton had no more of the grit she had in t2. and they created a fantasy story where they could kill border patrol agents. Instead of telling us a really compelling story, they inserted politics into it and ruined an amazing franchise. this doesnt even cover the fact that they brought back old people who were great 30 years ago, when they had no business being in these roles anymore(arnie and hamilton) just to use their noteriety. Or the fact that the border patrol massacre could at best just be considered a worse rehash of the terminator 1 scene without the impact or the shock value(since it was plagirism). so yea, holleywood isnt trying to make good movies. they are trying to package their political messages within movies and it's sickening.
Over 30 years later, and I still keep coming back to this scene. Just one of the many iconic moments in this movie. 1991, we didn't know how good we had it. 💯
We did. Now there's nothing. Last movie I saw was War of the Worlds. Yeah thats right. There's nothing like this. Ok Jurassic Park, Star Trek but thats about the only ones.
I saw it in the theater in 1991. It was like shot after shot of pure adrenaline. The whole place was in a frenzy. At the time the only thing to compare it to, in terms of sheer thrills, was Temple of Doom in 1984. The thundering drums, the intense metal shrieking of the soundtrack, combined with the unrelenting action on screen, was absolutely beyond description.
Today's "standarts" are stupit cgi my friend! Just see the makeing of Dark fate - that car is cgi, that tree is cgi, that truck is also cgi ... Total bullshiiiit!
At the theater in 1991, when the movie ended, people were frozen in their seats, seemingly too exhausted to move. The guy sitting right behind me said simply, "that was intense."
@@sotl7749 Yeah, I can speak for myself, at 14 years old I felt physically drained and exhausted. The phrase being "blown away" by a movie has never been more appropriate. I felt like I had been physically assaulted by the intensity of the movie. The guy sitting behind me just succinctly vocalized exactly what I was feeling. "That was intense." Up to then you would see people get up and leave as soon as a movie ended but here it seemed people were frozen in their seats, still processing what they had just seen or trying to recover from the experience. Roger Ebert has described the "bruised arm" movie and this was one of the most bruising.

Considering that the T800 from the first film was damaged by the truck explosion, but T1000 literally walked it off is a nice way to send the message that this Terminator is even more durable and persistent than the last
@korawitbuttramee618 not just damaged but his flesh covering if not already too severely damaged to pass off human was now gone, HE HAD TO NOW DESTROY HIS TARGET blending in was now no longer an option. The T 1000 can still remain stealthy which he ends up being most of the movie.

That moment when the T-1000 walks out from the flames in cibernetic shape was part of the history.....but made George Lucas took the decision of filming these horribles precuels.
The huge problems they had after making this masterpiece, was how to make a sequel that was better! Nothing they have made after this has even come close. This is just a pure masterclass in film making
3:25 I love this part so much. And the way the music victoriously swells up when he picks up Jon. Like you can sense the Terminator's inner computer confirming "Target Acquired". It always hits so hard. The T-800 really was like a father figure and Arnold Schwarzenegger was a symbol of strength for an entire generation. At least he was for me as a kid.
He was for me too, dude. him and Hulk Hogan. but mainly Arnie. Hogan told a story on Nickelodeon once about how he was a fat kid, and he wanted to turn his life around. so one day he said "enough of this" and did it. and that always hit home for me. like, it made me pursue MY dreams, and not give up just because shit was hard.
Arnie actually used to get the skin between his thumb and forefinger caught during the reload. Not only was it painful but he also smacked Eddie a few times doing it, nearly knocking him out.....didn't do it hard enough if you ask me!
Too many action movies just look too fake these days, I mean we still get big, action blockbusters but they just seem so tame in comparison to 80s, 90s and even early 2000s
No one gives Brad Fiedel enough credit for creating an absolutley heart pounding score to go with this chase scene. The cinematrograohy is eyeball candy, while the music composition is adrenaline for the ears.
NOTHING in the world can describe the ADRENALINE of a 10 year old boy and his father watching this scene for the first time. I REMEMBER THAT DAY, watching this movie with my father (RIP dad!)
Yep, (despite his mum disliking my encouragement), I show my 9 yr old the cool, safe clips of T2. We share such an enthusiasm for terminator. I'm sure your dad felt the same.
Directors think they need tons of cars and explosions to make a great sequence. this sequence had 2 adults, 1 kid, a bike, a motorcycle, and a semi and it is one of the most epic action sequences in movie history
exactly. it's a crazy sci-fi action movie that is still grounded to reality, as weird as that sounds. it's like the first jurassic park that came out a few years later. both of those movies are crazy, sci-fi movies but the action sequences seem real, so you can put yourself in that situation, which is what makes it fun and terrifying at the same time. When the movie is this crazy unrealistic action extravaganza, it's fun to see a movie like that for the first times ever, but now all movies are like that and it's boring quickly.
That’s one reason I hate todays super hero movies. It’s like they lack anything in the way of a good story so they just throw in a bunch of overblown CGI action.
Listen to the music from 03:00 onward, the build up to Arnold going off the edge and then the switch to the hero theme after he lands. Also notice when Arnold lifts John off his bike the 3 notes of the Terminator theme play. I also love the low camera angle down behind the motorbikes and truck. Such a great scene

the reason why this scene feels better than most high budget action nowadays is because everything in this scene is real . nothing is more scary and interesting than what happens in real life .
How many times do you notice a stunt double on the bike? How many cutaways do you see? No CGI or unnecessary explosions, but the only thing I feel about this scene is nostalgia.
The shotgun twirling by Arnie and the one-handed shotgun cocking by Linda are so freaking epic in this movie. I've never seen another movie make guns look so cool.

I remember as a young kid just watching the trailer on TV and thinking this is going to be the greatest movie ever. It seemed several levels above all other action movies. Not only it was then, it still is today.
For those who say Arnold isn't a good actor, check out how he cocks the shotgun. Arnold studied with weapons experts for months before T1 so he could learn to handle guns second nature. Robotically. Look at how he handles weapons in all the movies. T2 is an absolute gem. Solid diamond.
I wouldn't say he is a good actor. He is a good movie star. He is a brilliant man with natural charisma and a legendary work ethic. All that said, he can only do a certain range of movies. A guy like Chris Hemsworth is also huge, could do most of what Arnold could do but could also fit seamlessly in any number of legit dramas, like Rush or In the Heart of the Sea.
This movie has some of the best chases in movie history. I loved this film then and love it even more now. T1000 traumatized me when I was a child. James Cameron you're the man!!!
Terminator 2, Lethal Weapon 4, The Rock and Matrix 2 had the best chase scenes. Matrix 2 came out 20 years ago and still nothing I remember has top it's chase scene.
This Movie had a delayed release in my City Hyderabad (India). I was 9 years old and was awestruck watching this movie and the Graphics seemed otherworldly. Watched this movie countless times and don't get bored even now. Masterpiece of a Movie!!!

Rewatch the scene when he starts chasing John Connor on the motorbike through the parking garage, the dude was so fast chasing him and not looking like he was breathing, they had to reshoot the take because he was so fast he actually caught UP to the motorbike
The shot at 1:17 where the truck is crashing down into the ground with John in the foreground is one of my favorite action shots of all time. The sense of scale and "oh SHIT"ness of it is just absolutely perfection. God, Cameron is so damn good at this stuff.
It had to be customized to be spin-cocked like that. Otherwise, it could have been flip-cocked the way Bruce Campbell does at the end of 'Army of Darkness' (theatrical version).

They've made 4 subsequent Terminator films since that have tried to top it and they've all absolutely failed. This is god tier filmmaking and I don't just mean the special fx.

This is an example of a PERFECT movie. It cannot be remade. Robert Patrick gave me nightmares as a kid. We were in science class once when I was little and we were messing with ferrofluid (magnetic liquid) and when I saw it move it scared the shit out of me. Robert Patrick said a million things without having to say much at all. Classic.
I grew up watching this movie obsessively and the scene that always scared me wasn't even one with the T-1000 in it. It was at the end of the opening sequence when it shows the T-800 coming through the flames. For some reason when I was a toddler, I was always scared of two things when watching movies, that something could come out of the tv and get me, and when it was surrounded by flames. Don't ask, idk why lol
Maybe I'll write some stupid things, but Terminator Schwarzenegger is like Biden. And the liquid Terminator looks a bit like Putin. By the way, the flag of Russia is on the truck. And the boy, you guessed it, it's Zelensky. Dyson is Obama. By the way, Russia is not shown as an aggressor in this film. Russia was forced to use nuclear weapons against America. This film is a warning to all of us, from the past.
The greatest villians are those, who walk SLOW and dont talk much. When they chase, they chase when they run, they run like hell. This movie showed us the ultimate villian.

At 3:56 the bridge abutment blows apart, because it was made of cardboard. That bridge is a single span, it doesn't have an abutment. And by this point in the chase, the truck had already lost its top, so it would fit under. There was nothing to stop the truck. But the script demanded that the chase end there. So Cameron's crew built a fake central abutment. The bridge is at 34°13'31.4"N 118°21'40.4"W (copy paste that into google earth) on Nettleton Street.
The three bits I love the most from this scene 1. The fact the Harley survived that drop off the ledge, that shows that was a high quality bike he was riding. 2. The way Arnie tries to get in front of thE lorry but the t1000 is blocking him, he sees an opening doesn't hesitate and gets straight through. 3. single handedly lifting john off the dirt bike and planting him in front so he could protect him. Class film that can never be remade.
The bike was suspended on a zip line like mechanism using airplane wire, so when it hit the ground the bike bounced like it only weighed about 90 pounds, the spark effect was added to show how heavy the terminator was, giving some mass to the being riding it
A 90s Harley Fatboy never would have survived that drop in one piece. I own one, it's got a heavy engine, a low profile and no suspension to speak of - a jump from that height would break it in half instantly. I believe in the movie they put it on a steel cable so it actually fell gently enough to LOOK like a hard impact.
It's crazy how well T2 holds up even in 2021... I love how a film in 1991 looks better than a lot of movies today. That's what happens when CGI oversaturates or entirely replaces live action in modern day action sequences.

The set-up for the bike jump at 3:06 is pure poetry. When you realize he is all out of room, and then the camera shot is at ground level as he jumps into the canal like a boss.
Damn I love it but I hate that square platform. In one shot it's pointed and then it's flat. I think for safety reasons they built a platform but James Cameron dude it's way too obvious surely he saw that on edit. If they went off at a point I think the bike would be wobbly as hell on the crane. Why couldn't they not show the point and just leave it as they made it with the square block? It might not bug other people watching it? I can't help but notice it every time. It would be THE perfect scene if it wasn't for that. Maybe if it's to do with 1991? The use of dolls and stuff in this film is insane and that's what makes it natural and not OTT with the CGI

Arnold is an icon of masculinity, and the shotgun reloading on the bike really captures the essence of it. Badass, fearless, protector... efficiently eliminating any obstacle in his path.
@Christopher Marlowe James Cameron is not a hack. He has not directed a movie since 2009. Avatar wasn't bad, though I agree that it was overrated. I'm excited for Avatar 2, not because I'm an Avatar fan, but because it will be directed by the same guy who made Aliens, and Terminator 2. He is THE guy when it comes to nailing sequels.

@@hemantapy yup someone accidently gave him a real version of the gun and when it came time for him to do that reload the gun got stuck and almost broke his hand the gun isn't meant to be reloaded like that it would be too heavy on your wrist lol
The music in this scene gets me everytime. It's almost Jaws like, but much more frantic and metallic, whereas Jaws was much more methodical build up. I love how it fades out when John thinks he might have escaped, before the truck launches off the bridge and when the top goes flying. Then immediately cuts back in when we see the T1000 come back
Also worth noting is the difference in the engine sounds. John's bike sounds fast but fragile, the truck sounds deep and menacing, and Arnold's bike sounds strong and safe. Truly the mark of a director who left no detail untouched.

A redefinning masterpiece in cinema's History. I remember being an 8 years old kid back in 1992 when I first saw this movie, and it was just marvelous to watch our own amazed gaze with scenes like this. 2:40 the very soundtrack here follows me to this day as an epitome of awesomness. Frigging legendary. As far as I'm concerned, the Terminator's lore ends with this movie.
Could just be memories, but I remember being able to tell which scenes had Arnold and which had his stunt double. Especially the shot with the motorcycle jump. Looks like the remaster put Arnold's face on the double? Pretty cool.
Yes this version (4K remaster) replaced the more noticeable stunt double face with a cgi Arnold face. There’s also some other minor changes and fixes too.
I mean, if your enemy isn't an indestrictable liquid robot, shooting the driver is probably more effective, and they're a bigger target most of the time to boot.
Terminator 2 and Matrix - The epitome of ground breaking action films. No other action movie till date has managed to surpass the timeless action defined by these 2 movies.

It was made with the intent of telling a story filled with heroism, fatherhood, and to depict sarah connor as a woman suffering from ptsd as she struggles to come to terms with working with a machine that looked like the one that killed her baby's daddy.
now contrast that with dark fate. They replaced john with a woman for political reasons(feminism). Linda hamiliton had no more of the grit she had in t2. and they created a fantasy story where they could kill border patrol agents. Instead of telling us a really compelling story, they inserted politics into it and ruined an amazing franchise.
this doesnt even cover the fact that they brought back old people who were great 30 years ago, when they had no business being in these roles anymore(arnie and hamilton) just to use their noteriety. Or the fact that the border patrol massacre could at best just be considered a worse rehash of the terminator 1 scene without the impact or the shock value(since it was plagirism).
so yea, holleywood isnt trying to make good movies. they are trying to package their political messages within movies and it's sickening.

I saw it in the theater in 1991. It was like shot after shot of pure adrenaline. The whole place was in a frenzy. At the time the only thing to compare it to, in terms of sheer thrills, was Temple of Doom in 1984. The thundering drums, the intense metal shrieking of the soundtrack, combined with the unrelenting action on screen, was absolutely beyond description.

I felt like I had been physically assaulted by the intensity of the movie. The guy sitting behind me just succinctly vocalized exactly what I was feeling. "That was intense." Up to then you would see people get up and leave as soon as a movie ended but here it seemed people were frozen in their seats, still processing what they had just seen or trying to recover from the experience. Roger Ebert has described the "bruised arm" movie and this was one of the most bruising.

I think the moment when the T-1000 walks out from the flames is one of the most iconic moments in the entire genre. I get chills every time!
Considering that the T800 from the first film was damaged by the truck explosion, but T1000 literally walked it off is a nice way to send the message that this Terminator is even more durable and persistent than the last

exactly. it's a crazy sci-fi action movie that is still grounded to reality, as weird as that sounds. it's like the first jurassic park that came out a few years later. both of those movies are crazy, sci-fi movies but the action sequences seem real, so you can put yourself in that situation, which is what makes it fun and terrifying at the same time. When the movie is this crazy unrealistic action extravaganza, it's fun to see a movie like that for the first times ever, but now all movies are like that and it's boring quickly.

I wouldn't say he is a good actor. He is a good movie star. He is a brilliant man with natural charisma and a legendary work ethic. All that said, he can only do a certain range of movies. A guy like Chris Hemsworth is also huge, could do most of what Arnold could do but could also fit seamlessly in any number of legit dramas, like Rush or In the Heart of the Sea.

The shot at 1:17 where the truck is crashing down into the ground with John in the foreground is one of my favorite action shots of all time. The sense of scale and "oh SHIT"ness of it is just absolutely perfection. God, Cameron is so damn good at this stuff.

This is an example of a PERFECT movie. It cannot be remade. Robert Patrick gave me nightmares as a kid. We were in science class once when I was little and we were messing with ferrofluid (magnetic liquid) and when I saw it move it scared the shit out of me. Robert Patrick said a million things without having to say much at all. Classic.

I grew up watching this movie obsessively and the scene that always scared me wasn't even one with the T-1000 in it. It was at the end of the opening sequence when it shows the T-800 coming through the flames. For some reason when I was a toddler, I was always scared of two things when watching movies, that something could come out of the tv and get me, and when it was surrounded by flames. I've watched this about 100 times and every single time I still get the same suspense in the chase scenes. James Cameron is an absolute genius
At 3:56 the bridge abutment blows apart, because it was made of cardboard. That bridge is a single span, it doesn't have an abutment. And by this point in the chase, the truck had already lost its top, so it would fit under. There was nothing to stop the truck. But the script demanded that the chase end there. So Cameron's crew built a fake central abutment. The bridge is at 34°13'31.4"N 118°21'40.4"W (copy paste that into google earth) on Nettleton Street.
The three bits I love the most from this scene
1. The fact the Harley survived that drop off the ledge, that shows that was a high quality bike he was riding.
2. The way Arnie tries to get in front of thE lorry but the t1000 is blocking him, he sees an opening doesn't hesitate and gets straight through.
3. single handedly lifting john off the dirt bike and planting him in front so he could protect him.
Class film that can never be remade.
At 3:30, if you slow down, you can see the two stunt man. The John character is a 30 old dude.

The bike was suspended on a zip line like mechanism using airplane wire, so when it hit the ground the bike bounced like it only weighed about 90 pounds, the spark effect was added to show how heavy the terminator was, giving some mass to the being riding it
A 90s Harley Fatboy never would have survived that drop in one piece. I own one, it's got a heavy engine, a low profile and no suspension to speak of - a jump from that height would break it in half instantly.
I believe in the movie they put it on a steel cable so it actually fell gently enough to LOOK like a hard impact.
It's crazy how well T2 holds up even in 2021... I love how a film in 1991 looks better than a lot of movies today. That's what happens when CGI oversaturates or entirely replaces live action in modern day action sequences.

The set-up for the bike jump at 3:06 is pure poetry. When you realize he is all out of room, and then the camera shot is at ground level as he jumps into the canal like a boss.

Damn I love it but I hate that square platform. In one shot it's pointed and then it's flat. I think for safety reasons they built a platform but James Cameron dude it's way too obvious surely he saw that on edit. If they went off at a point I think the bike would be wobbly as hell on the crane. Why couldn't they not show the point and just leave it as they made it with the square block? It might not bug other people watching it? I can't help but notice it every time.
It would be THE perfect scene if it wasn't for that. Maybe if it's to do with 1991? The use of dolls and stuff in this film is insane and that's what makes it natural and not OTT with the CGI

I'm excited for Avatar 2, not because I'm an Avatar fan, but because it will be directed by the same guy who made Aliens, and Terminator 2. He is THE guy when it comes to nailing sequels.

My favorite part when T800 reload his shotgun when he is driving his Harley Davison Fat Boy
The music in this scene gets me everytime. It's almost Jaws like, but much more frantic and metallic, whereas Jaws was much more methodical build up. I love how it fades out when John thinks he might have escaped, before the truck launches off the bridge and when the top goes flying. Then immediately cuts back in when we see the T1000 come back

Also worth noting is the difference in the engine sounds. John's bike sounds fast but fragile, the truck sounds deep and menacing, and Arnold's bike sounds strong and safe.
Truly the mark of a director who left no detail untouched.
Also, the main motif kicks in (somewhat subtlety) after Arnold successfully rescues John.

I was here for the same reason. Edward Furlong double was in the older versions as well too I think. Pretty interesting how they made it unnoticeable.

Yes this version (4K remaster) replaced the more noticeable stunt double face with a cgi Arnold face. There’s also some other minor changes and fixes too.
