I admit that the scene has a humourous side indeed (I think on purpuse to lighten the mood) but personally, I still see the abuse despite knowing it's set in the 1700s. I think that last beating was unnecessary, they could have left it with them arguing on the floor and it would have definitely been very funny
Yes! I’m reading the book right now and listening to him reason with her with the old “I had to beat you, you made me do it. You understand, right?” Is awful. I understand it was a different time, but the author portrays Jamie as this chivalrous guy who time and time again defies what would be realistic behavior for the 1700s, so why is DV where the realism line gets drawn? And for Claire, wouldn’t this be a reality check and drive her towards getting back home instead of making her fall more in love with the man who just whipped her? So weird…
