Stock Jeep JK Wrangler 4x4 offroad rock crawling test

- Spent the day at Glasshouse Mountains testing out my new 2011 Jeep JK Wrangler, had heaps of fun and pushed it to its limits.
The standard JK Wrangler is an exceptionaly capable 4x4 out of the factory, Standard with traction control and a rear BLD (Brake Lock Differential) gives this 4wd the ability to crawl up things that most others couldn't with and open diff and no TC. Paired with Coil sprung live axles front and rear this is a capable 4wd!
The 3.8L V6 engine is punchy and has more than enough power to race of the line or kick into that mudhole, Paired with a 4sp automatic makes this 4x4 easy to handle offroad and smooth and comfortable to drive on the road.
Being able to take the roof sections out or the whole roof off is awesome for those weekend trips up the beach.
Overall Jeep have done an awesome job in continuing to create a great capable offroad 4wd.
If you enjoyed please SUBSCRIBE for more 4x4 videos!
Cheers, Nick

We need more reviews of stock jeeps on RUclips. Thank you.
I always go for the Sport S package because it will do 99% of the stuff you need it to and the money you save can go to a lift, tires, lockers of your choosing, and armor. Not saying I wouldn't love a Rubicon, but when money is an issue like it is for many of us you get what you can afford and build from there. Most people who buy Jeeps have no clue what they are capable of off the lot. They will surprise you.
@@TheVikingSailor I bought a 2019 Sports JL, all I did was put 33's under it and the thing goes everywhere I want off road. Grated I'm no rock crawler per say but for running in the mountains hunting and fishing its a goat and gets good mileage.
Can't hardly find any
Still the best Wrangler off-roading video on youtube. No ridiculous alterations. Just plain skillful driving in a capable Jeep. Thanks!
Yep !
Everyone new to off-roading should watch this video. It’s practically a training video. Nice work. Tread lightly. 👍
Hats off to you! Your video proves that a stock Wrangler truly is "Trail Rated" for a reason! Two thumbs up, amigo!
Well a stock wrangler AND a good driver. People with a lot less skill will get the rubicon with its front and rear lockers and sway bar disconnect and still not do nearly as good as this guy did.
@@JonBecker81 i agree!
@@JonBecker81 that's exactly what I was thinking. A good driver can take a stock vehicle an run circles around someone in a much better rig with less experience. I've seen this so many times.
Post 2005 jeeps suck
@@jonc2914 *that's* your takeaway from this video?
This Jeep isn't stock, dude. What are you trying to pull over on us? Is Jeep paying you to lie to us? That light bar clearly adds about 14 articulations.
😂😂😂
Thats what im saying.. kinda like ricers and their 5hp per sticker.
😂🤪... Only thing it needs longterm is fg Mud terrians or All terrains... Seriously. And I rock a 1stgen toyota!
14 articulations 😂😂🤣💀💀💀
Sr. you are a very good driver. Credit where credit is due. It's an open differentials jeep!!!
I've been off roading for about half a decade now, started with a bone stock TJ, now I have a built YJ for the hard stuff and a stock JK Rubicon for the easy, but comfortable stuff. You sir, know how to drive. I'm impressed.
Thanks alot! Sounds like you've got the dream setup! One for the hard stuff and one thats comfortable. Thanks for the comment!
Im assuming your rubi is your daily driver?
Hard to believe that's just a regular Sport . Amazing how well they perform off-road ...of course with a great driver mod
It’s what it was made for literally, they were specifically designed for military use during wars. It’s basically the same Jeep with modern updatess
Saved a lot of money by watching this and seeing what a JK can do without a lift kit and larger tires. Seriously impressive wheeling!
Great choice of lines and knowledge of the vehicle capabilities and limitations! Very fine driving and a testament to how capable the short wheelbase 2 door can be
Thanks alot Scott! 😁
Finally, I get to see the cover right at the beginning. So satisfying.
Always nice to see that you don't need a Rubicon to do more intense off roading.
I'm sure this was a fair bit of work to produce, you did great. And great driving! I could have gone with quieter music (or without)--it's nice to hear more of the original sound.
ManFromEast thanks man!
this was oddly satisfying. just so smooth
This was a lesson on short wheelbase and perfect driving lines! Impressive!
Nice to see a stock jeep getting it done. Good driving as well, "hat tip"
Thank you so much for making that. To show with the stock Jeep can really do!!
Very well driven. You're skillful driving demonstrated the Jeep's stock capabilities similar to or better than any press video. Well done!
Great video! Looks like you are enjoying that Jeep doing what it was made to do!
All I got on my Willy’s jk is armor and a roof rack. I still am able to do everything the guys with lifts and huge tires can. They are always shocked but what can I say, it’s a jeep.
I'm getting really tired of "stock" Jeeps getting tons of praise, you're a fake this isn't a stock Jeep... that light bar does NOT come standard! OMG that is some crazy good driving skill!!! You good sir would run circles around me on my best day. Freaking awesome video!! So happy to see this!
Dang I loved this video!!!!
I'm impressed! These things are monsters stock ! Wow ...... , I agree w someone else commenting .....I think the driver is the best mod u can get :)
the bld helps the wrangler a lot i love mine
thats great driving!
I like driving my Jeep so I can access many unpaved roads up in the wilderness and the stock Wrangler is well equipped to deal with majority of logging roads and as well it can handle many difficult off road trails. Lots of Jeep owners are not seeking the thrill of mountain climbing their Jeeps over huge boulders and crossing deep river beds.
Such smooth driving for a Sport which is base model! I’d love to drive my Rubicon JL through that mud puddle! 😎🚗💯
Awesome video man!
Charlz Nachos - Abraham Gal. Thanks Charlz 😀
Art sir. Pure art.
The jeep wrangler stock is really good and really impressive
One of my favorite 4WD stories was told by an Isuzu Trooper owner. He took someone who had never been off highway in a 4WD into the mountains in Utah and on roads that no ordinary car could possibly traverse. After they had been off pavement for about half an hour and had gone up several thousand feet, the passenger commented that the Isuzu's capability was truly amazing.
"Yes", replied the owner, "and we're not even if 4WD yet!"
The combination of running ground clearance, good front-rear balance, good angles of approach, break-over an departure make a difference that has to be experienced to be believed.
And my wife keeps insisting (with regard to picking the right line and knowing the limitations of the vehicle) that "It's 20% vehicle and 80% driver.
Great video
You just got yourself a new subscriber:)
Thanks alot! :D
We take our 2007 2 -door sahara and ride trails in Windrock all the time. Do we ride the "hard" trails? No, but it's surprisingly capable of a lot of stuff I didn't know about. Cool video. Thanks for puttin it up.
Great video showcasing the JK's stock performance. Most of this was down to your driving, as mentioned by many in the comments. You've given me a bit more confidence in the capabilities of my JK 2 door, especially after watching endless (usually American) videos of people saying you need at least a 2" lift, bigger wheels, lockers, blah blah blah. 7 years on from posting this video, I wonder what you're driving now? Cheers from NZ.
he's got a diesel mu-x
I just bought a used 2014 jk wrangler sport it has 255 /17 r17, which was a stock option. I am happy to see what these are capable of .One of the main reasons I bought one is for when I go up north sometimes the roads turn into trails then not even trails lol i just wanted a short wheel base so I can easily turn around and head back to the road mine does this perfectly. My friends have huge pick ups for them its a 27 point turn lol for me It is so much easier.
The Jeep may be stock, but there has definitely been a driver mod applied... Nice driving!
This guy can drive
I have the same jk Sport I did upgrade the tires stock is 255/75/17 I went with all terrain Back-country by deans tires im running lower but a wider tire no change in performance but awesome handling specially offroad went wider 265/70/17 stock rims like urs
Awesome stuff mate. If you need someone to tag along next time give us a yell. :)
Cameron Curtis Sounds good! Ill keep you posted :D
buy some quick sway bars disconnects if you want more articulation from the front axle ,awesome video
Richard Goins yes, fairly cheap mod
"Gotta buy a Rubicon to crawl and offroad, hurrrrr"
- Every Rubicon Owner
If you know how to drive you don't need lift, lockers, 35's, etc, Nicely done Mate.
uh nah dude lmao. If you know how to drive you can get further than someone that can't drive, but lockers, 35s etc absolutely get you further than a stock jeep like this.
Uh, wrong. It is true skill is the biggest factor, but the same driver in a stock jeep vs a modded jeep will go further and be be able to tackle bigger obstacles in the modded jeep. Its a matter of clearance and physics.
This thing seems to have lockers equipped (from the factory)
It doesn't. Only the Rubicon model comes factory-equipped with lockers. As he states in his intro, it has traction control and an anti-slip differential rear.
Brake locking diff all you need
Great video. No bullshit!!
You out here proving a base wrangler can do real shit. I got a 2 door sport as well but it’s on 33s. All the rubicon owners love to say you need lockers or this and that. I’ll go up the same trail open diffs plus mine is a manual.
Damn bro good to know
I have the same jeep except white. Also this shows that you dont need to spend 11grand more on a rubicon for good trailing.
A stock jeep can offroad like this??? Damn
WOW....!!!
Awesome video! I dig the music , what the name of it?
Everyone … this video is clearly misleading. The light bar makes any Jeep perform unmeasurable tasks.
Enjoyed your ride!
This just shows that a regular old wrangler and a skilled driver is a good combo. “Lockers? Where we’re going we don’t need lockers.” Were you riding the brake at 2:24 or was that the electronic traction control brake limited slip kicking in? There were a few other examples of that but that one just stuck out to me.
Hi Jon! This is all with the factory traction control and brake lock differential.
Good job!
I have a 2 door JK sport s myself and you have to love the bld's (brake lock differential) I'm able to go most places a locked 4x4 can go without the need of mechanical lockes that can complicate a differential and cause problems unlike the simplicity of an open diff.
yep its definately a capable car out of the show room with the traction control and bld !
You have obviously never done a difficult trail. The brake lock is near useless when a wheel is off the ground or has little weight on it as will be the case on even a moderately difficult trail. Lockers are simple. Brake locks have lots or electronics and computers. There is no substitute for lockers.
@@marty3006 what's a difficult trail? could you upload some of your expertise for all of us to see? #keyboardwarrior
awsome video. so far has the dana 30 front held up good? trying to decide on a jeep. a sport works best with my budget but what people say about the axles makes me nervous.
Hi Michael! The Dana 30 front and rest of the drive line held up fine while i owned the jeep. The jeep didnt need thrashing through obstacles like other vehicles due to the traction control and Brake lock differential which work seamlessly together. That is were the most stress is put on the diff, if you take it easy and use momentum when you need it I dont think you would have any troubles with the dana 30. Then again if you drive it hard there are always upgrades available.
Not bad. Good driving skills and picked your 'lines' correctly. Capable vehicle on dry surfaces, now let's see it how it does in some mud?

Cheers Dylan! : )
👍👍👍
Nice video and driving! I'm not familiar with brake lock differential....how does that work? You turn lockers on and when you press the brake they lock up??
Hey Stephen! It is the jeep traction control which works very well to brake spinning wheels to give traction to the wheel on the ground.
Although Toyota fans insist and keep saying Jeep is not reliable, you and a lot of Jeep owners can say the contrary since yours is really a wonderful and very reliable vehicle, ain't it? And most of times, experts say that Jeep Wrangler is the best 4x4 vehicle in the world, and Grand Cherokee is the most awarded SUV. So what? Well, though Toyota fans suffer and remain jealous, it's clear that Jeep builds the best 4x4 vehicles in the world. Cheers from Costa Rica.
Walter Meoño jeep do build a very capable offroad 4x4 straight off the factory floor. Cheers, Nick
2:36 That famous Chuck Norris split… :)
I have a Wrangler Sport and have found that there is no obstacles I can't surpass.
They are definitely one capable 4wd!
I’m considering getting a wrangler, but deciding if I need to get a Sahara or rubicon... sport does the trick most of the time?
Me in 2020 looking at this video so I can feel better about my amazing Jeep jk rubicon 35s because I see my uncle who had a 2019 jl with 37 rubicon now that h saw it out loud I live mf Jeep so much I’m trippin
this is stock? damn
WOW !! Awesome video. Can i ask what PSI you were running in those stock tyres ?
Down to 18 psi 😊
@@LowRangeNick Awesome... thanks for the info
as slow as possible and only as fast as necessary ,class act #havagreatday
Nice video!! How do those tires work out off road? I have the exact same, tires on mine and i hear they not good off road, so i am hesitant to go,off road, but they seem to hold off pretty good... Thanks
hcastilla2010 They are pretty good for sand and rocks but will clog up with lots of mud.
Cool, thanks...
Does this have quadra-drive like the grand Cherokees ?? And also gotta love glassy 👌
Not sure what Quadra drive is sorry. It has traction controll and a Brake lock rear differential.
Nice driving. What size are the stock tires on this?
Rhoadsie 255/75r17 goodyear wrangler a/t tyres 😀
Would the front have more articulation if you were to manually disconnect the sway bar?
Yep, it would help with articulation offroad 😊
kia parice hai is ki
Do you have diff lock on? I don’t think you do (from the 2 minutes I’ve watched so far), but I keep second guessing myself...
No diff lock. Just the traction controll.
LowRangeNick ah that explains it. Thanks!
I imagine the new jeep released with a diesel engine will be popular in the outback...coming soon...
Well was it
Slow and easy. Where have I heard that before?
Люблю эту машину. Особенно в этом кузове. Молодцы американцы могут если хотят.

Awesome vid. Manual or Auto?
Auto 😊👍
Do the 4 door models have that BLD/rear diff setup like yours as well?
If they dont have diff locks from factory they will have the BLD
LowRangeNick thank you so much ! :-)
cool vid... I'd prefer no music personally
No lockers right? I can see only one wheel spinning.
I have a stock sport too and looking to get dirty with it
No lockers, just factory traction control and brake lock differential. 😁👍
@@downundermotorbikes3765 esc is electronic stability control which is different to traction control. Esc is turned off in 4lo but tc remains active 👍
@@LowRangeNick BLD, or “brake lock differential.”
BLD does not care how fast the wheels are turning, just that they are turning at the same speed. It provides improved traction capability similar to a locking differential.
There are times when controlling how fast the wheels spin may not be desirable for driving conditions such as mud or deep snow. In this case, pushing the ESC button once (in 4wd high range) will disable the brake and engine portions of traction control that control how fast the wheels are allowed to spin but leaves BLD on. In 4wd low range, only BLD functions so there is no need to turn off traction control.
Hey that’s a mail Jeep.
I felt the good years didn't do what I wanted them to do I think it's a look cause of wrangler on the tire thread doesn't last that long
When one tire leaves the ground, what do you do? Serious question
Keep driving if you have traction. If you don't have traction and are bouncing or stuck then try reversing out and taking a slightly different line.
That jeep is full stock? Cause I could buy a Sport and it take me everywhere. Rubicon is too expensiveee
Yep completely standard 😁
Dude a rubicon is for those who 1.have money to waste 2. No nothing about offroading 3. Both.
You can get a sport for less money and even mod it in the future and you will not only save more money but the value to increase to equal or more than a Rubicon of the same year depending on how many miles it has.
Jon BERTOCCHI With enough money, you can take a base model Wrangler and make it as capable as it needs to be. The fact is that for the average person who doesn’t have time or space to wrench on their own ride, the Rubicon is a very good value. With Dana 44’s, locking differentials, front and rear lockers and a crawl ratio perfect for rock crawling, you will would be hard pressed to buy and have mechanic install parts to bring it to Rubicon levels. I have one for that reason and yes, although I am no expert, I do know and have more than average experience off roading in all kinds of terrain. No matter what trim, the Wranglers are awesome out of the box that you can enjoy and personalize as you wish.
Are you in the UK? Just noticed it’s right hand drive
In Australia : )
Theres an awful lot of wheel lift and lack of articulation for a wrangler, does the Australian market allow for sway bar disconnects?
Sway bars are still in, it's illegal to remove in Australia.
@@LowRangeNick ok that makes sense, Vehicle laws over here in the US are far less strict. We have kits that replace Sway bar connecting rods with new rods that have cotter pin joints allowing the sway bar to be connected and disconnected within a few seconds when needed.
@@davidpeterson3147 That is a good idea!
Is this sport trim? I'm looking to buy a jeep. But trying to decide how capable the sport trim is or should I spring for the Rubicon.
They are good offroad in either trim but the diff locks in the rubi con make them unstoppable 😆
@@LowRangeNick can you add front and rear lockers after market? And if so would the expense justify not going for the rubicon?
@@peetymed yeah you absolutely can add them after. It would cost around 5k for front and rear lockers installed 👍
