So, where to begin. Meryl Streep the person is politically the polar opposite of Margaret Thatcher. Margaret Thatcher the person would never have revealed weakness or infirmity publicly. And yet the "The Iron Lady" is a masterpiece because it is wildly successful at revealing Thatcher as a fascinating, complex, flawed...but very real person. I just loved that film. I thought Margaret Thatcher such a brilliant woman and it was incredibly sad to see her mental health decline. My husband had Alzheimer’s for about nine years and it was a very cruel disease. For the last couple of years we could laugh and talk about our lives60 years ago and he was as normal as ever . It just takes you back further and further till there is nothing left but death. I can’t imagine what that was like for Margaret because she was so alone and no one to help her think back.
People always complain why Viola Davis didn't win the oscar for best actress that year. I love Viola. I think she is magnificent but at that year, Meryl Streep has no competition.
Meryl Streep is the greatest. She is probably left-leaning with politics, but with what she said here was totally compassionate. Respectful I am 100% Thatcherite and Meryl Streep did a wonderful job in the acting of the character of Margaret Thatcher. Well done Meryl🇬🇧🏴🇬🇧
“She is a contentious figure” Meryl Streep stated calmly as if saying: she is just doing her routine, being a neighborhood woman as she was called to do. As prime minister’s word, “I am fine.”
I've only run for a political office once. When I did, the so-called "journalists" started almost every question with the phrase "How do you feel about.......?" I'm a U.S. Citizen so I confess to not having paid as much attention to British politics as I maybe should have but I suspect, there as here, there are two kinds of politicians. One kind do what "feels good" or what they think will persuade the majority of their constituents that the politician is doing something to help the constituents personally. The other kind do what they think is right because they think it is right. That second type remind me of JFK "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." P.S. Meryl Streep has more talent in her little finger than most actors have altogether.
My grandma's brothers-in-law called her behind her back Thatcher because she was assertive and my grandfather would do what she said. This in Mexico with the machismo.
Anthony Hopkins also did very well in Nixon, with regard to being ignored in old age I very much admired the way Richard Nixon remained extremely relevant throughout his life.
meryl streep did a better job than gillian anderson in the crown, meryl voice as thatcher and the hair and whole appearance is very similar to those of thatcher where as gillian had more deeper voice. Listen i love them both , both are great actresses, but meryl is simply the greatest :D
I just got done watching season 4 of The Crown and I'd agree Streep was a lot better, imo. That Streep set aside her own personal politics to portray Thatcher, the great leader as a person is a testament to her talent for the character of her role, that the role was of a real person.
From the trailer of The Crown I expected Gillian to rival Meryl in the role, but on the actual show the result is very one-note. She doesn't vary her voice a lot the way Meryl does, and at times she strains and struggles. She was still good, don't get me wrong...but it just wasn't on the same level.
loved Gillian's performance but the main detractor for me was that she was too thin. Maggie wasn't fat but she was a bit dumpy, and big boned. they did give Gillian's costume's padding but she was also too thin in the face, and they didn't do anything to flesh her out more in that area.
The reason why this movie was such a missed opportunity was how inherently sexist it was in it's characterization of Thatcher. They spent far too much time on her declining mental state in her retirement, pining for her deceased husband, and on her youthful school days relating to her future husband. The trailers make it look like the focus of the story would be her time as PM, but really they barely glossed over 11 years in 15 minutes. Love her or hate the real women, this movie was terrible. This would never be done with a male counterpart. No one would make a movie based on Regan, only to focus 3/4 of the movie on his alzheimer's. Nothing against Meryl herself, but this just reeks of sexism from beginning to end. They might as well slap the audience over the face with a towel that says "see what happens when you let a women run the show? See how utterly miserable she becomes?" This is what happens when we constantly tell women's stories through the eyes of men.
Thatcher's greatness wasnt that she fought for women and she had to fight against her rival men. her greatness was that she fought for what was right and should be done for the good of her people!!! i am certain that if someone asked her if she was a feminist she would reply no
I have a feeling Margaret Thatcher wouldn't like this film because it highlights her as a woman in power that overcame obstacles, not as a person that overcame obstacles. Margaret Thatcher was always quick to put down any notion that femininity played in her career. She wasn't the most influential "woman" leader that Britain has seen in the 20th century. She was the most influential leader in 20th century Britain. Unfortunately, the film is soaking wet with feminism, advocated by those in Hollywood and today's political landscape. Margaret Thatcher would probably roll in her grave based on that alone.
She was a tory. Pretending sexism, racism, etc. don't exist is a core principle of that ideology, because without it they wouldn't have a constituency.
Thatcher was a true feminist in every sense of the word. She got to where she was on merit. Not quotas. Not sleeping her way there. Not claiming oppression. I look back now and realise how amazing she really was but at the time it was just cool to hate her.
Ordinarily having an American for this role I would find an abomination, but I have to say Meryl Streep played this role to perfection and she has my gratitude for making this film the brilliance that it is.
@@bibbiana4Lyfe You obviously missed my point Hollywood maybe teeming with British actors but they don't land roles as The President of the United States in blockbuster movies, it was a compliment to say that Meryl Streep portrayed Margaret Thatcher better than any British actress could have. @@rugbydazz2264 British actors have played many American presidents. Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Nixon, LBJ...and that's just off the top of my head. Ben Franklin wasn't a president, but a Brit has played him too. There's probably more. Usually, we don't complain. But every time an American is mentioned as playing a British politician, Brits are absolutely apoplectic, as if it's anathema. Luckily Meryl Streep and John Lithgow shut the noise up immediately...because it's silly. @@MrKpsuk84 I don't think that at all. She is uncannily like Thatcher. Gillian's depiction requires a contorted face and she is working hard and unnaturally all the way through. Put Thatcher side by side and Streep wins hands down. Gillian is doing a caricature, Streep is acting.
I would have loved to see her as Thatcher again in the Crown this season. The other actress did a great job but seemed very one dimensional in the body language and tonality in speech :/

Unemployment under her reign was the worst its been since before the war and far from being "great for the economy" her reign was sandwiched between 2 recessions and the "boom" was a meer 2.5%
Under Thatcher the deficit ballooned from 0.1% to 2.2%
Im unsure were the evidence is she was a good pm
"The first generation worse off than before"
If you've herd this quote then this is her legacy
Great leader and an inspiration to women

Best actress ever ♥️
It makes me proud for such a brilliant actress to play me.
Stunning performance
I-Simply-Love-Meryl!!!
Spooky good performance, just amazing!
I agree with you. But M Streep made an obscene caricature of M Thatcher, to collect money from the resentful left.
My god she’s so pretty in this interview 😮😮
People always complain why Viola Davis didn't win the oscar for best actress that year. I love Viola. I think she is magnificent but at that year, Meryl Streep has no competition.
Streep would beg to differ. She would go on to state Viola should have won.
I think Viola had the edge that year.
Meryl Streep was perfect as Thatcher
“She is a contentious figure” Meryl Streep stated calmly as if saying: she is just doing her routine, being a neighborhood woman as she was called to do. As prime minister’s word, “I am fine.”
Meryl portrayal was very respectful
Some historians say she had even more stamina than Churchill
Wow.. Accent nailed.
She makes the film watchable.
what a brilliant pm, and what a brilliant actress
I've only run for a political office once. When I did, the so-called "journalists" started almost every question with the phrase "How do you feel about.......?"
I'm a U.S. That second type remind me of JFK "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
P.S. Meryl Streep has more talent in her little finger than most actors have altogether.
That´s really interesting what she said about the little old ladies. All ladies will get old and become old ladies one day. We have to remember this.
She’s so correct about how un-British the House of Commons are😂
M Streep made an obscene caricature of M Thatcher, to collect money from the resentful left.
You did a fantastic job as Margeret Thatcher ( you were her) first class. Steve Jones UK
Why are you comparing them? Gillian did a marvelous job.
Yes!. M Streep made an obscene caricature of M Thatcher, to collect money from the resentful left.
Shut up
I do Love MEN. I do not mind some Sexism.
Thatcher's greatness wasnt that she fought for women and she had to fight against her rival men. her greatness was that she fought for what was right and should be done for the good of her people!!! i am certain that if someone asked her if she was a feminist she would reply no
She fought for the 10% cunt
I have a feeling Margaret Thatcher wouldn't like this film because it highlights her as a woman in power that overcame obstacles, not as a person that overcame obstacles.
Margaret Thatcher was always quick to put down any notion that femininity played in her career.
She wasn't the most influential "woman" leader that Britain has seen in the 20th century.
She was the most influential leader in 20th century Britain.
Unfortunately, the film is soaking wet with feminism, advocated by those in Hollywood and today's political landscape.
Margaret Thatcher would probably roll in her grave based on that alone.
I would say she was the most influential leader in post war 20th century/post 1950s Britain. What about Churchill
Who gives a flying fuck what she probably do in her grave? She didn’t deserve a burial. She deserved to be burned at the fucking stake
@@BigMikeMcBastard The fact that the first female pm was a Tory would suggest that they, not you, were correct.
Thatcher was the last uk PM to truly lead on principle and belief.
Yes! M Streep made an obscene caricature of M Thatcher, to collect money from the resentful left.
Man, she can easily do Greer Garson from Mrs. Miniver
The film was brilliant!
Ordinarily having an American for this role I would find an abomination, but I have to say Meryl Streep played this role to perfection and she has my gratitude for making this film the brilliance that it is.
Abomination? And yet America is teeming with british actors...
@@bibbiana4Lyfe
You obviously missed my point Hollywood maybe teeming with British actors but they don't land roles as The President of the United States in blockbuster movies, it was a compliment to say that Meryl Streep portrayed Margaret Thatcher better than any British actress could have. Get ya head out ya ass and read what is being posted.
Nationality shouldn't be a bar to entry when it comes to playing a role of an iconic person of state, as long as you speak the language. All you need is a good actor to do it.
Meryl Streep is the epitome of acting. Her iron lady is spot on. Gillian Anderson's is forced and uncomfortable.
Nah Gillian is better
@@tamztamz7633 Not even close.
I'm watching The Crown and compared to Gillian Anderson's performance Meryl Streep's version (during her time in office) seems rushed
The Crown's Thatcher is portrayed as if she'd just had a stroke...for 11 years.
She was my hero growing up and I’m a man
I would have loved to see her as Thatcher again in the Crown this season. The other actress did a great job but seemed very one dimensional in the body language and tonality in speech :/
She was brilliant playing a brilliant person

As much as I absolutely love Gillian, I feel that Meryl did a better job of playing the formidable lady. I feel that G.A overacted somewhat

I Do Not Agree With Meryl Streep Politics But She Is One Of Greatest Actress Ever
Streep is exactly the opposite of Tatcher in her political views and her demeanor. Oh the irony.
