I’ve been using the slow mow this year In Georgia, so far it’s doing great, this is my first year using growth regulator, it went to mowing at least 2 times per week to every 10 days
On the video where you visited The Lawn Rebel and used his push mower you mentioned that it is good for large lawns. I wish I had one back in the 90's The 90's was my hey day when I mowed lawns working with my Dad. I had to mow a large lawn with just a plain push mower (Lawn Boy Brand) and it would take me two hours. Having to stop every time the bag would be full of grass clippings and empty the bag. What was worse was that large lawn was on the side of a hill. So I would be mowing at an angle back and forth. Now I work in two worlds. Contract jobs in Silicon Valley Companies (I have a Business Administration Degree) and as a cowboy at our ranch taking care of our cows. But watch Lawn Care videos By Ryann Knorr, The Lawn Rebel, Stets Lawn Care, Blades of Grass and August Hunicke tree cutting on youtube in our living room with my Dad.
A youtube guy called How to Doc is developing a granular product with Anderson's which he says will be easier to apply and has been posting videos about it lately..
That product has been on the market for many years. Anderson's is a company that caters to golf courses. However, most golf superintendents prefer to spray Trinexepac, the active ingredient for more scalable and predictable response rather than broadcast granules. So they do not have a very big market for that product. Enter someone willing to sell products without a good understanding of turf agronomy. I am a professional lawn care operator and do not have any intention of spreading a granular growth regulator. I spray my growth regulator.
Great info - on the Zoysia turf though, I spoke with one of the owners of Super-Sod about my Zoysia and this specific liquid growth regulator and he told me he did not think it would be good to use a growth regulator on Zoysia because it is already such a slow growing turf type. I'm not saying it is the company's official position, but that is what I was told by one person there anyway. I am in my first full year of growth and I'm mowing using a manual reel mower at least twice a week, sometimes three to keep it looking good and to push lateral growth, and just for the exercise. I just sprayed some Sedge and I've not mowed in probably 8 days to allow any sedge or other residual weeds to grow and outpace the Zoysia for a follow up spot treatment, but so far so good. Point being, even in the middle of the prime growing temperatures for Zoysia (low to mid 90's) and putting down fertilizers (spoon feeding every 3-4 weeks), iron, Milorganite and humic acid and fulvic acid, my lawn could easily go another week and still not look overgrown, so I'm not really sure why anybody would feel the need to put down a growth regulator on Zoysia since it is such a slow growing grass to start with. You can easily mow Zoysia once every 7-10 days and still have a very nice looking lawn.
I used it n my El. Toro zoysia, and it works great. El Toro is the most aggressive of the zoysia family that I know of. Without the PGR, I would need to mow every four days.
Al Credeur I agree. I would have bought sooner if it wasn’t $150 a pop. i finally pulled the trigger but it would be nice to test drive a quart before going full commit on a gallon.
Great job Ryan. Thanks for that. I currently use the T-Nex and the Greenkeeper app is a big help. Side note, cant wait till next weekend were i will be camping at a certain lake by Mr. Mustache. Going to swing by and become a looky loo and yell out the window you have a sissy lawn and were is my Brylcreem.
I've been looking into growth regulators but watching this video has given me a better understanding of them maybe next year. I watched your video on above ground irrigation and I am using the sprinkler hack that you were using. I'm proud to say it works great I am in the middle of July and I am able to water 2200 ft² easily. Beautiful green grass add an inch and a quarter. Watching you the dragon and the lawn care nut Have raised the bar On my turf. Cutting a half inch off every 2 days. Commitment makes the difference. Love your channel.
I'd like to use it for both my overseeding and my Bermuda lawn, but my front and back lawns are 300sqft each. This thing would be around when my great grand children are mowing the lawn!
I use it at half the rate every two weeks. I haven’t gotten that bronzing but have the slow growth and when mixed with nitrogen and iron I have a deep green.
I use it mainly in the spring to make my yard thicker. Then do my overseeing and maintenance in the fall. I have a mono strand KBG yard. I use a pgr tracker that an excel spreadsheet from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln.
I attempted to turn my lawn to fescue but last summer was too hot and i don't have irrigation bult into parts of my lawn that are far away. I had a bermuda i had previously "killed" grow in and basically displace and outcompete the fescue i planted under those conditions. I decided to give up and be a bermuda lawn owner lol. Will this help with spreading the bermuda or should i just fertilize it and allow it to spread that way and just deal with the mowing? The bermuda is a tad thin because I did kill it back to it's roots and then some after applying two applications of Drive XLR8 this past year. Now that I want it i really want to get that bermuda to spread as much as possible through the yard. Should i use a growth regular or skip?
Boom you answered my question at the end. I’m planning to do a renovation in the fall and was wondering if I can put TNex down a week or so before I begin the overseeding. Thank Ryan!!
Ryan your videos are great! Thanks for the informative posts! I’ve been watching them fo over a year now. You have a cool season lawn and I have a warm season lawn, centipede. Can you recommend another poster that u have faith in that focuses on a warm season lawn such as centipede? Thanks 😊
3rd comment! If it is my first time spraying anything with a backpack sprayer, what's a good recommendation for a product to put down on my lawn (just in case I over apply)? I've read up on everything I need to do.. but I'm a worry wort and would rather start out with something that will not damage if slightly over applied. I was thinking possibly Hydretain since my grass is stressed from the heat?
In all seriousness, water is the best thing to use to learn you walking pace. Measure out 1000 sq ft on your driveway or road. Put 2 gallons in your sprayer. Walk at a normal pace and spray the area. Over lap paces slightly. Once the area is sprayed look at how much water is left in the tank. That is how much water you need per 1000 sq ft. Then when you spray your lawn do it early in the morning when there is dew on the ground. Walk at the same pace, follow your footsteps and as long as you mixed your product at the right ratios there should be very little chance of over application.
My Bermuda is loving the heat. I could easily mow twice a week. I’m just disappointed I can’t get it to stripe better. Ryan, would you recommend mowing my Bermuda twice a week? Enjoy the content. Keep it coming.
Hey Ryan! Question. Is it Tenacity that you use for weed killer and if so what do you do with the pups after you sprayed the lawn? I hear just wait until it dries but my pup likes to eat grass so maybe longer? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Love the videos.
I use weed and grass killer in my backyard since I have abundance of crabgrass. I'm tired of it raining and getting out of control. Southwest Louisiana here.
Ryan have you applied with iron vs without and with AMS or Urea vs without? I am currently using T Nex at .2/M with Main event but am wondering if I could just spray it alone and be ok. I get some bronzing at the rate I am at so may back it off a little but have heard that without the iron it will bronze even more. just curious if this is true or what your experience is!
I applied this product to my Bluegrass at .50 ounces per thousand but for some reason I thought it was gonna get thicker but it actually did the opposite my lawn send out a little bit it’s just a common issue
How much drainage do you have from the lawn? Do you think any of the products end up in the stream behind your house? Or are you able to water these products in before there are any concerns with runoff?
Ryan I live in MN and have really shaded back and front yard and how would I go about with growing my lawn with a ton of weeds. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Adam.
Get these two herbicides - Speed Zone and Tenacity, and grab a sprayer, marker dye, and a surfactant. Treat your weeds (you can mix these two together and apply at the same time). Find a dense shade seed and put it down. I'm in MN and have a heavily shaded yard too, (30+ year old maple trees) and my grass is looking good. Didn't know about growth regulators though, I think I'll have to give this a try.
I have a bunch of crabgrass and some weeds. I was thinking of doing a Tenacity application the 1st of August to start killing those.....about 3 weeks later I was going to start prepping for overseeding with a shade mix (scalp, dethatch, aerate, overseed) and apply tenacity again just after seeding. Thoughts on that timeline Darksky and/or Ryan??
