- Sviridov’s “Reville” from ‘A Pushkin Wreath’, his settings of some of Pushkin’s poems, sung by Imperial College Chamber Choir, conducted by Jack Apperley.
Recorded live at our Spring Term concert, ‘Beyond the Great Game’ at St. George’s Church, Bloomsbury Way on 21st February 2020.
The Reveille is a traditional military bugle call heard in the morning to signify the start of the day, depicted here in one of Sviridov’s early works by the off-stage soprano and alto soloists. A humming chorus represents the sleeping servicemen on the battlefront. Meanwhile, a bass soloist reminisces over fond childhood memories throughout the piece.
Our concert explored the relationship between Great Britain and Russia during the 20th century, through composers who were active during a time when religion was not always so openly accepted.
So beautiful. It is Pushkin's Garland. The reader of poetry realising that the night has passed because he hears reveille bugled, and the soumd takes himmback across the years. The book of Dante's poetry falls neglected from his hands as the bugle repeats its call and wakes the present.

I happened to be at this concert, and the whole thing blew the audience away. They used the galleries of the church to immense effect.

The descants are typically slightly out of tune. Not so in this recording!

It's interesting in some recordings I struggle to hear the trebble in others the bass/bariton (such as this one), in others again the trebble is too loud. Still wonderful work for a piece that deserves so much more attention in the west than what it gets!

dude, i love this. it's a tragic piece. makes me think of a boss battle between a hero and a villain in space, except the hero is losing, and the villain is looking down on him. it also reminds me of an old vast deep space, it gives me those vibes. so it fits if the fight is in space, with all the asteroids and planets.
tis would fit in arcane. there was a piece similar to this in arcane if i remember correctly.
it just reminds of something bomastic and colorful and explosive. imagine if we saw big bang with this on the background.

The poet has been reading through the night, until the distant bugle (sounding Reveille at a military camp) evokes a strong reaction, bringing a flood of memories and selfreflection. The treble "bugle" keeps sounding throughout, driving the bass poet's reflections. (Pushkin is the poet. )

Does this version have copyright or am I allowed to use it for a non commercial student film?
Every version has copyright, and the piece itself too on account of Sviridov dying in 1998. The piece might get in public domain only in 2079, and only THEN might some recordings be put in creative commons.

У Свиридова не осталось наследников. И при жизни он не был богатым и стяжательным человеком. Думаю, он не был бы против использования своего великого творчества в просветительских и некоммерческих целях, разумеется, в достойной форме

Это произведение написано Пушкиным, когда он находился вместе с российской императорской армией во время очередной войны с Турцией. Никакой украины тогда не существовало
