You are THE MAN! This frustrated the hell out of me and the raspberry pi documentation out there on the net didn't help at all. They skip the part where you should run the ROMs from the F1 menu. If you don't do that your controller is useless and you can only use the keyboard. DROVE ME NUTS! I was so mad I couldn't play Gremlins, my favorite 5200 title. This video solved the problem. Thanks so much!

AMAZING TUTORIAL!! You speak so clearly and it's a beautiful step by step that works with the new RP update 4 as well. The nice thing is that the new update allows you to simply load the BIOS files the way you instruct and then the games simply load up on command. I'm so glad I found your channel! SUBSCRIBED!!!

Hi it's me, from the future. This video is still helpful, as I struggled all evening to get this thing running on RetroArch for Windows. To run newer games than the 5200, one needs to manually select the Machine Type after loading the rom each time. Apart from that, the instructions are more or less still spot on. Thanks

thank you for this! it works with retropie 3.8. i have noticed that after getting everything configured and running the games, most times i can launch the games from the retropie menu! you should also note that while "F4" does start the game usually, some games require you to press "F3" or "F2" first for "select" or "option" (i can't remember which is which) also, "F5" resets the game and "F9" exits to retropie menu. do not press "F8"..i am not sure which function it performs but so far i have found that the only way to get back to retropie after pressing it is to cut the power. thanks again!!! (also note that you may have to reconfigure your controller within the atari 800 emulator)

I appreciate your videos so much man, especially ones like this that detail exactly what to do to get stuff working. I set up RetroPie on my rpi4 and got a bunch of different systems going....I never got the 5200 to work because of that "real is needed screen". I gave up because I already had too many games to play anyways. The other day I was trying to get games running to play at a family event and 5200 was still not set up right. Now I can get it going and my aunt can show off her alleged frogger skills👍❤️

On a side note, you can simplify the process for running 5200 games after the initial setup if you run a game, go into retroarch, then settings, then change the system emulation to 5200, and set it to select the cartridge type automatically-- make sure you save the configuration. Once you do that, you can choose your game in EmulationStation from the menu like you would for other consoles and it will go straight to the game. You still have to press F4 for it to start, but at least there are fewer steps.

  • @mikejohnson3874
    @mikejohnson3874 6 лет назад +1

It can easily be run from Emulation Station, just have to edit each rom individually. For example with Pitfall go to Cartridge Management -> Create Cartridge From Rom File - > Find your Pitfall rom -> then choose One chip 16 KB 5200 cartridge -> Then overwrite the rom in your directory
Now it'll load directly into the rom when you launch it
You can also play without a keyboard if you install jfroco's atari800-rpi and overwrite the original atari800 emulator, it maps the emulator to your controller

ETA Prime, I know this video is old as all get, apologies for replying to it... I wanted to share that, in order to use a controller with the 5200 with lr-atari800 - you can go into the retroarch settings, under input, where it lists all the different controllers, you can set it to Atari Joystick, and you can press start on the controller and everything and not have to press F4, you can exit like any other emulator based on libretro, its beautiful.

The emulator = Atari800. I'm sure ETAPrime burned the midnight oil getting this emulator to work. Remember, there are several Atari 800/5200 emulators in the wild. I was mixing instructions and could not play games. The PC only emulator, Altirra, is recommended. Thank you for giving the emotionally abused 5200 some love.

PuppetDungeon M.U.L.E. is one of the best games EVER! I remember playing it when it was first released and thinking at the time how terrible the graphics looked. Still ended up playing it for months with a couple of friends though! Multiplayer was great fun. I've tried playing it on pc with my son, he loves the game but frustratingly we can only play single player mode as the second joystick won't work! I'm going to try this on my pi zero and see if I get any joy... See you on Irata!

men, i know how launch the games from your theme in retropie!!!!you don´t have to enter atari5200 frontend.
I will explain you..you have to go into CARTRIDGE MANGEMENT, and then you have to create a cartridge from ROM image.
The system will ask you for the rom file.
You have to enter the right one, the one you knows that works perfect.
For example, for jr.pacman i choose the rom "Jr Pac-Man (1984)[a1].bin.
This one i know that works good,
and then i choos the right cartridge for the game.
For example in jrpac-man i choose standard two chips, because it´s the only one that works good oon this game if you choose one chip, you will not be able to play it.
So, and then you have a.52 file that works good launching from retropie.
    Thumbs up

ETA, I think this video isn't up to date, because I Saw Somewhere else a dude that managed to launch Atari 5200 directly from ES.
Dunno if he uses atari800 emu or another emu. I just asked him and waiting for his answer.
I love Atari 5200 and I think this system is really lacking on most retropie images, it's just to Bad.
I'm making my own retropie image and I really need to include Atari 5200 in it. But atari800 emu is just a pain in the ass ! I'm now sure there's another way and I'll tell you.

  • @asdf-un9gs
    @asdf-un9gs 4 года назад

I can't believe there is a simpler process... Most of these steps could be automatized by retropie, like automatically finding the roms in the BIOS folder, and allowing to launch the games from emulationstation.

Don't follow these instructions with Retropie 4.5. I did and it was totally hosed. Just follow what it says for the installation on GitHub. Just copy system and game roms, make the configuration file, set default system to 5200 like it says. Everything you need is on the GitHub site. I actually followed this and wound up going all the way back to the beginning of burning the retropie image and just followed GitHub. Can start the games from ES and never needed to go into the magenta screens.

Hi ETA Prime, thanks for this guide. I'm currently stuck and am hoping you can help. I was using a different guide at first (before I found this one) and it went through some of the steps but not all of them. This has left me stuck at the point where the keyboard is frozen (the part in the video where you say you think it's a bug - 12:08 in video). The issue is that the previous guide didn't put me through ALL the steps you have outlined here, so when I press F5 to bypass my keyboard being frozen, I am taken to the screen that states "sorry this program needs a real Atari/OS"...etc. I have tried deleting all of the ROMs and starting over but still the same issue.... Any ideas? Thanks in advance for ANY help!!!

Hmm. I was not able to get it to work. 1st I am running the latest Retropie ver. I transferred the 5 Bios files over via network like you did. 2nd I did not have a folder called atari5200 folder on the Pi like you did so I had to create it. I had the other Atari folders just not that one. I reset the system and can not get the Atari logo from Retropie to show up in the banner to continue your steps. I even tried removing the files I placed via Network and placed them on a usb stick to try the original way of placing roms into retropie and still does not work. The Raspberry Pi does auto transfer the BIOS files and creates the atari5200 folder and moves the 5 or so roms I wanted to install that ends with .a52 extension but for me to get any further I need to see the Atari 5200 logo in the Retropie banner to continue. Is there something in the video that I missed? All I have on my banner is Retropie and "Playstation" which was my first successful BIO install and Game installs. The only other thing I can think of is my BIOS files are corrupt but they matched the files sizes you have in your video.

I have a Pi3 running the latest RetroPie 4.1 release. Most of the installed emulators, and a couple of extra I've added work very well. However, I find this 'atari800' emu to be problematic. I find that out of about 20 ROMs for the 5200 I've tried, perhaps three or four launch successfully. The rest just display the rainbow Fuji, but not the name or the last 2 digits of the copyright year, and then the emu crashes.I've tried using these same ROMs with the KAT5200 emu in Windows 10, and the ROMs all work great. I've watched this video, read through the wiki articles, etc. I even grabbed another MicroSD card, installed RetroPie from scratch and did nothing to it except configure a generic gamepad and install the Emulator as per this video. The same issues.I am thinking that maybe these are wonky ROMs or something, but they work great with KAT5200...

For any and all cartridge games it is best to stick with the No Intro sets not those ancient goodsets. The ancient goodsets have bad copies of games,, and hacked copies etc.
The No Intro sets are verified perfect copies of each game, you get 1 game for each region (USA, Europe, Japan). The No Intro sets that you find can be trimmed down to what region want.
In summary, just grab the no intro roms and it should play right out of the box

I'm following your setup, and when I tried to load the ATARIOSA.ROM it says "can't load, incorrect checksum". Any idea what I can do to troubleshoot?

Is there any way to emulate BOTH fire buttons and the controller keypad? I know that games like RS Baseball and Pole Position need this

It's too bad the MESS 5200 emulation is too slow on Pi because that's a lot easier to implement (at least it was under PS3 'OtherOS').

The Atari emulator doesn't show up on the front end for me. I'm running 4.1 and installed the Atari 800/5200 optional package.

i figured out that you need to unzip the roms then put them in the corresponding atari folder.

thanks for the guide, it works pretty well. I have an issue with the Atari 800 roms though. I can only load roms with extension bin. Files with extension "atr" won't load, the emulator loads the previously loaded bin rom. Any idea why?

I pressed F1 on the keyboard to get the emulator menu. Then selected run atari program and manually located the rom I wanted to launch (goonies.atr) and then it worked. After that I had no more issues, I can launch the games from the retropie menu.

btw you should be able to use the "find ROM images in a directory" to assign the bios ROMs more quickly.

Thank you so much man. Been struggling with this for two days. If anyone sees this, is there a way to get the game to load without a keyboard now?
