This has changed my life so much. I learned this song so I can play it for my crush at my school talent show and she really liked it and now she's my girlfriend. Thank you so much! This has affected my life so much in a great way so I thank you Edit- we broke up after 2 years but stayed friends. Fast forward a little while I met an incredible girl. We’re engaged and are expecting a baby boy! Live your life to the fullest. Much love everyone 🤘🏼
I'm a beginner guitar player... Opened this up thinking it would be unattainable, but the way you carefully explain everything has truly opened new doors for me! The way you play is gorgeous. With some practice, I'm starting to sound pretty good, too! Thanks!
Been playing for years but never played Blackbird, but a beginning student (who's really sharp) wants tis song...so I'm using this as my guide, thanks.
btw its for students who can't afford lessons. So really appreciated. HOC provides guitars and expenses but your video is helping a young lady with a love of music.
Nice job, just how Paul plays it. I've been looking through tabs and I even have the Beatles Complete Scores book and its just not the same, the notes are, but where they are played are different. Generally I don't care if a song is played exactly the same as the artist, but being my favorite Beatles song and a song I grew up with, I like knowing I play it how it's suppossed to be played! :)
I've been playing for 23 years, this was the first finger picking song I ever learned to play. I realized after years of playing it I was doing it wrong- specifically the top end of the intro peice where Paul does the little finger strumming back and forth. I began to play it correctly in my own way, but after watching this video I now realize I have been overcomplicating it. This is such a solid illustration of my journey of learning to play! I can't tell you how many times I've tried to learn a song and give up bc I am overcomplicating the darn thing. Then I decide to do what I should have done in the first place and get online to see how other people play it. Idk why I never just skip the headache of trying to learn it by ear...
Thanks to you, I just checked off something that has been on my bucket list for 36 years (learning to play "Blackbird."). Thank you ever so much for teaching us. Money coming your way!
Thank you so much. I've wanted to play this song for so long and it always sounded so complex but your lesson has got me playing it in just twenty minutes :) I have a lot of practice left to do before it sounds perfect and strumming different directions with my index finger is proving the most difficult but what I'm playing now is definitely recognisable as Blackbird! Thanks again for giving up your free time and expertise to help us all out :)
This is far and away the best guitar tutorial on RUclips, for this song or any other. I started playing the guitar about six weeks ago, and this song was one I wanted to learn when I got good enough. You make it so simple I am already good enough. Thanks for explaining it the RIGHT way, as most others leave out the distinctive index finger strumming that makes the song so pleasant.
Thank you so much for this... I love it. While I was living with my former boyfriend he used to sit up in his loft and play this all the time. He was a very talented guitar player, one of the original Journey members. I will always have fond memories of him playing this, it must have been one of his favorites. I am learning it now, having dug out my guitar that has been gathering dust for the last 35 years. Thank you for making this video, maybe even I can learn it now :).
I have always lived this song and as a music enthusiast and newbie at the guitar, this has helped me so much ♡ feels so great to finally be able to play one of my favorite songs
Ive been playing guitar for almost 2 years and I finally decided to learn finger style and this video is so good and you break it down perfectly and I already impressed my family with this song. Thank you so much for the video.
Honestly in my opinion your lessons are the most detailed and best quality. Your like an actual guitar teacher not just someone showing off the chords. Your amazing
ive been playing casually for a few months now, and i just sat down and learned this. took about 2 hours but now i can play through this. im pretty proud of that
Thanks Carl, you're a legend man. I just picked the old 6 string up after years of neglect and have been mucking around the last couple weeks. Never really learnt guitar and know enough chords to play a Nickleback song. Thought I'd challenge myself and happy I did. Picked up this lesson in a couple hours and super proud of myself! Thanks for the great lesson!
Such a great tutorial! Part 1 & 2!! So easy to follow and broken down so well! I never thought I'd ever be able to play this song!! I'm so happy I watched these videos!!! THANK YOU!!!!
I've always loved this song, but it's only when you try and learn it yourself you realize how clever Paul was to write it. The Beatles are respected for a reason, they were excellent songwriters. I will always love Paul for writing this one.
I’m currently working on an informative / demonstrative speech for my public speaking class on how to play guitar and this video was such a great help! Thank you!
thank you, that was a really good lesson and nice of you to take your time to show it. I'm a rocker myself but there's something about the rabbit hole of this song that I want to go in and understand his process writing it.. thank you very much, you and Paul
I want to learn this so bad, because first, this song is amazing, second, I want to show this to my music teacher, and just be able to play this. Imagine just sitting at the beach, with friends, you just finished swimming and now everybody's sitting and listening to you playing this. The birds chirp in that background, making this moment more perfect
Sooo I’ve tried to learn this from a different teacher ( mentioning no names) and just couldn’t get it now after studying your class I’m finally making progress thank you so very much you rock and stay safe
hi Carl! I think it would be super helpful if you at the end you would play the whole song so we can follow along :)) thanks so much for being here! i've learned a lot xxx
Nice job! When I went through the sheet music it looked like an easy piece to play... boy was I wrong. To play it correctly Is a challenge. McCartney with the Beatles was the best at making simple music sound spectacular...in my humble opinion. Thanks for posting this, it helped me immensely.
Hi Carl, A big thank you for your generosity and please do not change your style of lessons and yes I really appreciate you taking the trouble to explain in your eloquent voice all those little details...Bravo!!I I look forward to learning from your other videos as well.
Good job laying out each piece and stitching them together. Beginners need songs like this one because it helps you feel like you've accomplished something, without getting discouraged and giving up.
I wish I could give this HALF a thumb up; It's essentially correct but not quite correct. The most important element is correct, that being that the bassline is walked up and down CHROMATICALLY, which so many others get wrong in their tutorials. The left hand notes are essentially correct, though it is possible to do with less sliding from one position to another. I'm not sure the right hand technique is 100% correct but it's close enough. I haven't seen part 2 of this tutorial yet so I can't comment on it. All in all, this is one of the better tutorials I've seen online for "Blackbird" so I give it ½👍
I play the guitar for about 8 months now. And I have learned this song ( part 1 & 2) in a couple of hours. So it can't be that hard to learn... Thank you for this tutorial, I really think you did a good job!
also a simple way to mute the high e string throughout is just to rest you ring or 3rd finger on the bottom of the string, i found myself doing it naturaly anyway, also i use my middle finger on b string and ring finger for e string throughout and brushstroke with the index finger. this may be to the liking of some
Hi Carl. Here one of your guitar studentes. My name is Alberto, Im from Mexico. This past week I learned Black Bird thanks to your tutorials. I just wanted to thank you for putting so much care and talent to what you do, as an apprentice guitar is something I admire greatly you are a great guitarrist. By the way, I wonder if it would be too much to askyou to upload a video in which you run black bird in one run, because Im a bit confuse when I attach each section in the song in one piece.Saludos
wow thank you ! You teach very well , I dont know what happened but suddenly pieces of the big puzzle begun to unify in my musical area of my brain while I was taking notes with your tutorial 😁 awesome xxx
Best blackbird tutorial ever! I just started playing the guitar a little over two weeks but I was able to learn this whole vid within a few days! Thanks! :D
People like you do so much for us. It made me want to pay it forward & help others so I volunteer at a nursing home & play the songs I learn here to old folks that don't get visitors. Anyway, thanks heaps Carl!
Your video is great. I did find flicking my index finger downward awkward. So, I adjusted my finger picking to use my middle finger alternating with my index finger in a common classical guitar manner. I don't think anyone notices any difference.
Thank you for this lesson. I learned this song recently but I could not nail down the bell effect. Now with your explaination, I got it. I appreciate it. What a great song. Again...Thank you... Mario
I have watched several lessons for this song and yours is by far the best one. You explain this in great detail. My index finger is super sore so I have been using my middle finger😀. Love your videos keep up the great job, it is appreciated by many. Thank you

I remember watching this video when I first started playing in like 2012 and I couldn't learn it. i just came back to it and learned it in just 30 mins. crazy.
I used to be able to play this song PERFECTLY, then my guitar playing lapsed and I couldn't remember it. Thanks for the lesson as I think it's starting to jog my memory.
Superb explanation. I’ve learned it a different way having never seen it actually played live. This way looks like I’ll have to give it a go! Thanks for the upload/lesson.
Excellent tutorial. The best camera and teaching methods I've seen on RUclips. Thank you very much for making this easy. I'll definitely check out all your other lessons :-)
thanks a lot for the very clear lesson! It's amazing how quick and easy it has been to learn plying something I've thought was going to be a nitghtmare! Thank you very much.
well done. used to play by ear but don't have time anymore to go over the music painstakingly the way you have and it really sounds the way he's playing it although it's an odd technique. It's not typical Travis style. Good job
you do the verse with so many extra movements! for the chromatic scale on the a string, just use your second finger the whole time on the a string and alternate the other notes with first and 4th fingers on the other two strings. same exact notes on same exact strings, you just dont have to shift your whole hand ever time you move up 1 fret... It is a phenomenal tutorial, tho. thank you
I play it like Paul does. There are of course other ways of fingering it, but if I taught it like you recommend, I would get nothing but negative comments about it
