- Hey, y'all! Here's the second installment in my "One-Take Covers" series. Live from my downtown Kalamazoo loft with zero touch-ups or tweaks, here's Blackbird, originally written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. It's long been one of my favorite songs, so I hope you enjoy my humble rendition. :-)

I just learned of the story behind this song and I’m absolutely blown away at how appropriate it is for the time in which we’re living... “Blackbird” was actually written about the Civil Rights movement in the 60s. In England, girls were often referred to as “birds”, so “blackbird” could roughly translate to “black girl”. The song was an acknowledgement of the injustices taking place and an encouragement to black women to not give up hope. At a concert in Little Rock, Arkansas, McCartney introduced the song by saying, “Way back in the 60s there was a lot of trouble going on about civil rights... We would see what was going on and sympathize with the people going through those troubles, and it made me want to write a song that... might just help them a little bit, and that’s this next one...” Jesus, heal the broken wings.
Girls still get called ‘birds’ affectionately in Liverpool but I had no idea this song was about the civil rights movement amazing

My brother was the only one out of us four kids that had black hair. A macabre humor that was absolutely hilarious, bringing together every thanksgiving that we had as a family - together. We always said I, the youngest, was the glue, but really it was him. He committed suicide on December 3rd, 2021, when I was at a friends wedding. I wandered down the aisle, bridesmaid on my arm, wondering if it was all a big joke. If I would come home from my trip to Houston and he would come out of his house laughing. It wasn’t. I think of him every hour of every day, two and a half years on. I miss him so much. He was our blackbird. He flew away and we never saw him again. He never made us laugh again. Only in memory of his lease on life, what he saw, how he saw it, was unique to him and him alone. I miss him… so very much. I love you Avery. I will never, my god, will I ever forget you.
I sang this song in January 2022 for my dad while he dies and I saw freedom in his face. God, I hope he is very well now with you. Dad, I love you so much and there is not one second, that I do not miss you! I hope you are proud of me. Thank you for all the years with you. Thank you ❤️ And thanks to Cory Asbury for this wonderful cover.

My oldest son, my only boy. This was his first favorite song. When he was old enough to watch movies, his first favorite movie was Boss Baby. And if you've seen the movie, Tim's parents would sing this song to him before bed. And I would sing it to my son because he loved it. Thanks, Cory, for helping me recapture the precious moments.

Beautifully played and sung my brother! For our 50-year class reunion, I was asked to do some song from my BC band days back in the 60's so I played my favorite Beatle song, Here Comes The Sun! Seeing the Beatles in 65 changed my life but seeing Jesus in 71 changed my life eternally! Blessings and keep writing great songs for the Lord! Blessings!

Paul and George used to play Bach’s Bouree in E minor for lute as a little warming up in studio.
This tune was written alone in his kitchen as an improvisation on those chords.
As a song of comfort and hope for the little back girls in Arkansas. They were so threatened by the mobs of adult, Americans, trying to attend the first non segregated school in the South they had to have four National Guard escorts each, walk them into school.
Beatles entire existence is thanks to African American Blues and Rocknroll musicians of the first half of the 20th century.
American Apartheid was a socio-economic base to establish prosperity for the ” Superiors”, at the price of the ”inferior”.
And ”white supremacy” is on the rise again, expected to be tolerated.
These girls where only little schoolgirls. You’ve probably seen Norman Rockwell’s iconic painting/magazine cover of this.
I met one of those ”girls.” At age 71 (i think).
She moved to Scandinavia early to leave that shit behind. Most remarkable woman and story.
All of it is very moving.
But that’s the bigger picture.

Everyone who crossed paths with the Beatles in the 60's singles out Paul as the musical genius. Which speaks to how otherworldly their talents were because Lennon's songs are obviously the work of a genius as well.

I saw this video about a week ago and was amazed by Corey's talent. I went to a concert at Red Rocks just last night and was astonished to see Corey opening for Casting Crowns. I wouldn't have recognized him if I had not seen this video. Rarely do I see anyone with this kind of talent. I thought he upstaged everyone. He could significantly widen his audience if he could get away from the religious thing.
