I own an Osborne 940 original design in S30V and the green aluminum scales and purple back spacer. I'm fortunate that I was able to buy mine at a Navy Exchange on sale. I think I paid $164.00. That was several years ago. Benchmade products have been skyrocketing over the past couple of years. I've owned 17 different models, given some to my kids. Currently have 11 in my collection. The last one I bought was the Griptillian full sized drop point thumb hole S30V version. That was over 6 months ago, don't see me buying any more until they get a handle on pricing. Carrying my Spyderco Paramilitary 2 S45VN and Ferrum Forge Archbishop 3.0 in CPM 20CV.
It’s so thick behind the edge that you will be disappointed with it. I’ve never been able to get it to feel slicey without laying the edge so far back that it looks ridiculous. Save your money for something with more modern geometry.
@@EvilTwinRC51 They honestly need to made a new version with a deep hollow grind, thin out the blade stock just a tad, and they could keep the robust tip and still make it slicy with a hollow grind. They are great for blade shapes like this with not much room to get thin quickly.
@@BrandonGavin_EDC I got a Smock in M4 a few years ago and the hollow grind makes all the difference. Almost the same width in both blades but what a difference in ease of cutting.
I’d agree for the Benchmade warranty if it covered everything but eventually you need a new blade, that’s $90 now. I won’t use the sharpening service because my home edge is better. So you pay for what? Some free screw or a pocket clip? If something is terribly wrong most companies will replace it anyway.
I’m carrying the 940-1 today. I bought it years ago when Benchmade was a better value. I’d be hard pressed to pay the $350 they charge for it now. I like the knife. But I don’t see $350 for it.
Carried the original 940 for a few years and really liked it. Bought the BladeHQ variant and found the G10 to slippery for my taste. Stuff is as smooth as glass. I ended up with a Benchmade Mini Presidio and it’s by far one of my favorite knives. Don’t carry the 940 much anymore.
I bought the Blade HQ Exclusive one in Jade G10 and M4 blade for around $155-$165 in late 2023. For that price it was a no-brainer and completely worth it. Iconic knife and excellent design.
Had the same one (green scales) for 3 years, carried it no more than 5 times! Little shake and it would fly open! Sold it a month go, and I’m pleasantly relieved. Would I buy another Benchmade? Nope, I promise!
I have the 940 and 941 and the 9400 auto in my collection. My 940 was purchased right after they were introduced and has been carried a bunch , same with the 941and 9400.Great knives with the exception or the 9400 but my examples cost way less than the current models. I doubt I would buy any of the three again in the current knife market. Just to many better priced options made in the USA at considerably less money. I have a dozen or more Benchmades in my collection but no plans to ever buy another. The price and the poor finished product would be my reason.I am big fan of the current budget knives on the market and most of my knife budget is spent there.Almost forgot , an Ozark trail axis lock and a Leatherman arc are in the pockets today. First carry ever for both.
Well I went with the Holtzman Congo survival knife. I saw a couple bad reviews where the EF 135 broke in half and the EF 145 had bad chips on the sharpened edge. Paid more for the Congo but it came with more so we will see. 👍
I admit, always wanted one of these. With what's out these recent years, I've been able to focus on others BUT always will gush over Osbourne's. Carrying my 'Brotherhood' Sparrow in 3V today.
940 is still good. I'd have to spring for one in magnacut or something tougher than s30v and I don't really care for the axis lock anymore but I can understand this being someone's favorite knife.
S30v and aluminum. Not anymore. I got one and I hate washers. I had to polish the washers to get it good. But for 240. Hell no I got mine for 180. Still a bit high imo.
Price is definitely high! Luckily my cf and s90v came really smooth and strong. Which isn't always the case. When they do it right and good the action is good, but I've had some where it's not good
The super freek is there best cross bar lock period. Mini freek is nice also. But kizer has ruined me on crossbar locks. The clutch lock is far superior. I wouldn’t buy any other crossbar lock again period. The kubey bluff is a nice design but feels nothing close to the clutch lock
IMHO the only knife they have ever made that comes close to being worth what they charge. feel Benchmade as a company reached there pinnacle with this family of knives and has not been anything near deserving of the hype since. I think they are still trying to surf the Osbourne wave decades later.
I think the Osbourne and Super Freek are both great EDC knives. All around users, the bug out is great, if you need a lw knife, the Adamas I love because it's a massive chunk of cruwear but anything they've come out with since the Adamas has been severely over priced

They won't get my business either prices are to high
Iconic knife but I can’t justify spending $200 on it in todays market.
I can't be mad at that brother
I've wanted one so freaking bad for a long time now, just can't justify the price. I'll get one eventually though, mark my words!
Your not missing much. Please trust me
It’s so thick behind the edge that you will be disappointed with it. I’ve never been able to get it to feel slicey without laying the edge so far back that it looks ridiculous. Save your money for something with more modern geometry.
If a version can be caught on an awesome sale I'd have no problem snagging one but at their full retail Benchmade is higher than me
@@EvilTwinRC51 They honestly need to made a new version with a deep hollow grind, thin out the blade stock just a tad, and they could keep the robust tip and still make it slicy with a hollow grind. They are great for blade shapes like this with not much room to get thin quickly.

Dude! The 940 uses washers, not bearings!!!
thank you for your wisdom
...And the back spacer is titanium, NOT aluminum.
I wish theyd do an xl version. I have the Contego, and love it, but a larger 940 style handle with the 4" Contego blade would be nice.
That would be awesome 😎

You make great points

I would not pay that either. It sucks they have went insane with their pricing

Totally agree. Asinine. It's not sharp like a tanto so how can it be a "reverse" tanto.
Thanks brother 😂

Well played! 👍🏻
this knife is legend around here
I’ve always wanted a 940 just because I think everyone should have one but they are quite steep now.
I think the only still at a decent price and it's still probably to high is the grip?
@ yeah it’s decent. The FRN is around $130 but come on, at least use G-10 ya know?
Had the same one (green scales) for 3 years, carried it no more than 5 times! Little shake and it would fly open! Sold it a month go, and I’m pleasantly relieved. Would I buy another Benchmade? Nope, I promise!
I haven't bought one since the cruwear Adamas came out. Won't be for awhile either

Never bonded w the 940, don’t really know why. Twosun 210 and a cold steel swift 3 warming in the pocket.
Very nice brother 💯🤜🏻
I love my 940-1 but it's not worth what they charge. CF and S90V. In the pocket today back to the CS Swift III
Idk what they even charge for the cf and s90v anymore but they are over prices
@ yea I'm not sure either but the MSRP on the base version is out of whack I can't imagine how much they want for the fancy stuff
Well I went with the Holtzman Congo survival knife. I saw a couple bad reviews where the EF 135 broke in half and the EF 145 had bad chips on the sharpened edge. Paid more for the Congo but it came with more so we will see. 👍
Very nice. Holtzman does well
woo they are both nice knives
I need the 945 to go with my 940. I absolutely love it. Today I'm carrying my #704gear urban ranger lite.
Very nice brother! I've thought about a mini as well! And a mini freak 😂
The freek is also on my list.
Love my 940! A classic for sure
Thanks Lisa 🤠
I admit, always wanted one of these. With what's out these recent years, I've been able to focus on others BUT always will gush over Osbourne's. Carrying my 'Brotherhood' Sparrow in 3V today.
Nice carry brother 👏🏻

The action BTW is probably the best of any benchmade due to the proportions of the blade. And it runs on washers, not bearings.
I’m partial to the BM Griptilians…sweet knives!
Love the griptillian too brother 🤜🏻
940 is a good knife. Carrying Yeager & Sebenza 31. 👍🏼
Nice carry brother man 😎
Definitely earned it's place, but there's just so much better out there now.
Agreed 💯
S30v and aluminum. Not anymore. I got one and I hate washers. I had to polish the washers to get it good. But for 240. Hell no I got mine for 180. Still a bit high imo.

No ball bearings; bronze washers
Thank You I misspoke
GREGGGGGGG...👊...Speaking up for us common folk...Greg = KNIVES FOR THE PEOPLE
Thanks brother 😂
reverse tanto s a stupid term for me. thats a spey blade, found on any tradtional trapper pocket knife
Right 👍🏻 agreed
I dont own one, but I would like to
Thanks Kathleen
My 940 & 9400 are both treasured members of my collection. Reliable and trouble free….and with today’s prices, the cost is reasonable. Classics!
Thanks E 🙏🏻

Clutch lock is king
I can think of about 100 better and cheaper knives that I would purchase before this one at the same price but that's just my opinion
i agree & respect that! i also wouldnt knock someone for picking one up. i do wish theyd come back down to earth
Good take
Thanks brother 🤜🏻🤜🏻
Never started brother 😅
My man 😂
This knife runs on ball bearings
Yes thank you, I misspoke. It happens
For $200. I would rather buy a 4" 5" fixed blade with decent steel with nice micarta handle.
It's all about your preference. 👍 i cant argue with that
IMHO the only knife they have ever made that comes close to being worth what they charge.

This is 100% a hype knife. It’s ugly as fuck overpriced and nobody wants this.
Damn did the 940 steal your girl?
🤙
thanks bro!
I think it's an ugly knife tbh.
Nothing wrong with that
