  • Monea Castle lies in the rural countryside, east of the village by the same name, north west of the town of Enniskillen, in County Fermanagh, in Northern Ireland. It stands on a rocky bluff, above a small dried up lake with a crannog.
Monea Castle was built around 1618 by the Rector of Devenish, the Reverend Malcolm Hamilton, during the Plantation. The oblong tower house, 3 storeys high, with its characteristic Scottish style, stood in the corner of a rectangular bawn, with 2 circular flankers. This bawn was built in 1622 shortly before Hamilton was promoted to become Archbishop of Cashel in 1623.
During the Irish Rebellion of 1641 Monea Castle was attacked by Rory Maguire. Shortly after it was refurbished and used again by the Planters.
In 1688 Monea Castle was occupied by Gustavus Hamilton, Governor of Enniskillen, who had incurred enormous financial losses in the Williamite Wars. After he died in 1691 his greatly impoverished wife and children continued to live at the castle, but had to sell the estate in 1704.
In 1750 Monea Castle was gutted by fire and subsequently abandoned.
In the 20th century a woman named Beth McCabe took her residence in a vault beneath one of the towers until she was evicted by the proprietor.
This is a beautiful remote castle ruin, situated in an idyllic landscape. It is one of my favorites and I really recommend a visit! It is freely accessible.

My Maternal Sir name is McGuire - my Paternal sir name is Hamilton. Tracing family history from Colorado to Ireland found both families overlapped. Based upon my computer search both my families were in N. Ireland with in 40 miles. Your presentation for Monea Castle and both Maguires and Hamiltons on the same property is corroborating/validating some of my findings. Not saying they are exact, but driving me wanting to know more. I am looking for genealogical assistance. Would we be able to touch base or can you recommend someone who can assist? We will be traveling to N. Ireland in September 2023 and would want to confirm some of my findings??? Can you assist?

I have a video of crom castle the area around lisnaskea was the seat of maguires. the most of the maguires are based in enniskillen... i was making a vlog of enniskillen castle but unfortunately lost the drone. I was at school with many of the maguires and there is still a huge amount of maguires in the town, which was my home town. if you look at my video of coles monument the guy speaks of the maguires and the history. enniskillen castle was originally maguires castle before the plantation of ulster. the library in the town will have all the history. the castle has a museum but dedicated to ww2. and the maguire history has been wiped from it. i hope this helps and i will make that video soon but im currently in malaysia. good luck on your quest and many of my videos are tied to the maguires and the clans and i intend on making more if you would like to subscribe. i will be home in january and will try again to create that video and tag you and all the others that ask in the videos..
thank you for commenting and supporting the channel.

I have been doing a lot of research on my Maguire lineage, and have traced my lineage from my father directly back to Rory Maguire mentioned in the description. I am planning to go to Ireland in September as well. I hope I can get a clearer picture of what happened to Rory's children after he died. I know they left Fermanagh to get away from the English, but it’s not clear what they were doing until around 1753 when an LT James Felix Maguire came to America with his father John King Maguire. Rory Maguire was their great/great-great-grandfather. They changed the spelling to McGuire (Because of the English???). LT James Felix McGuire died at the Battle of Blue Licks Springs, Kentucky in 1782. He is my 8th grandfather.

So I hope this explains part of your question... I will follow the path that is the flight of the earls very soon in a vlog.. but basically all the chieftains of the northern part of Ireland fled around 1607 so none of them is frowned upon..the English had conquered most of Ireland and they had no army left to fight them off so they had to flee... There is still tons of descendents left especially in the Fermanagh area, including Maguire's O'Rourke O'Neill and O'Donnells .. if you follow us on Ever Wander you will find out lots more including the castles they left behind and the place from which they left Ireland.
      Flight of the Earls
During the closing stages of the war between England and the Ulster lords, the castle suffered much damage, sometimes by English attackers and sometimes by the Irish, including the Maguires themselves, to prevent it from being used by the English.
In 1602, Hugh’s successor as chieftain, Cuchonnacht Maguire, destroyed the castle, again to prevent the English army from setting up a base there.
With the peace settlement which followed the defeat of the Ulster rebels, Cuchonnacht Maguire was pardoned and an arrangement was made for him to receive half of county Fermanagh, including Enniskillen Castle, with the other half going to Conor Roe, head of the Lisnaskea branch of the Maguires.
However, in 1607, when Cuchonnact Maguire organised the so-called Flight of the Earls and left Ireland with the other Gaelic leaders, he was deemed a traitor and his lands were confiscated. With the castle now in English hands, Captain (later Sir) William Cole was put in charge and tasked with using the remnants of the Maguire tower-house to make the site a workable garrison fort.

Getting a handle on the RUclips communications. Anyway, cant and don't have any information about the Maguires in Australia. If they are disliked for some reason, I have no input. I do remember from my schooling that at one time the British used Australia as a place to send folks they did not want in their country. If it was prisoners or other. But that was many - many years back.
