  • This month, we present the visual splendour that is this tabletop version of Stalingrad, first shown by the Earlswood Gamers at shows in 2018 and created by the amazing Alan Sheward. WI had the chance to not only game across this 99% scratch built set-up using the Chains of Command rules, we also took the time to chat to Alan on how it was all put together. We’ll have more on this as a part of WI387, our January 2020 issue, which focuses upon Urban Combat, but, for now, take a look at one of the most impressive layouts we’ve seen for a long time!

Absolutely stunning. Simply one of the best tables I've ever seen. Would look great as a diorama, let alone as playable terrain. Gives me so many ideas for my own terrain, especially the Idea of sewers and basements that can be covered up or left open to change different games.

Incredible work. I would never have guessed at first glance that it was an interactive diorama, and have never seen or heard anyone discuss a mix and match table with removable parts.
I imagine being able to play or wargame on this would give a higher appreciation, as the smaller dioramas I've done I can hardly touch for fear they'll fall apart.
Also, great use of simple materials would have kept costs down while still retaining a realistic effect. At first, I thought everything must have been individually built, painted and weathered down to the last brick, but your willingness and innovation really work.

@Mark Cramer Just checked out your FB page, good stuff, all of it. My father had a friend who did dioramas for the Australian War Museum decades ago, and what I notice is something quite similar - The environments have to have that level of life in them, to work. Has to be more than "a place", needs to have that level of actual "in progress" look to it to work.

At first I thought: Yeah, that's really a pretty table. It's a pity, that it offers no modularity...
Then I watched the video till the end.
Absolutely amazing. Mission accomplished I'd say - I'm really really inspired. That is the same approach I follow when building terrain but I have not much city terrain yet.
How long does it take to set up the table like that from blank plates to what we see in the video? One or two hours at least I would think but the high modularity is a well worthy trade-off!
