    I think this movie was really about how all emotions are needed. 'Toxic Positivity' was a big theme too, especially with Joy always wanting Riley to be happy. Sure, happiness is good, but the other emotions are just as important. This also ties into the 'duo core memories' at the end, as Riley becomes older, she becomes more complicated.
    Also, the sequel got a trailer some time ago.

    You know, the lead emotion says everything about a person's main personality trait. Riley's lead emotion is Joy, what makes sense, since Riley is normally a very happy girl. Not just that, but you can see that her emotions all fight over the control of the console, representing how a kid's emotions run wild, while an adult has more control. Her mother's lead emotion is Sadness to show that she is a very compassive and empathic person. Meanwhile, her father's lead emotion is Anger to show his more strict side, seen also the more militaristic style his mind has, where the other emotions address Anger as "sir", as if he is a general.

    I think the only reason joy didn’t send up the memory near the beginning is that she’s afraid that the other emotions would change it like sadness

    • @rafaelmatos5851
      @rafaelmatos5851 11 месяцев назад +119

      Yeah, Joy used to be very controlling. She wanted Riley to be always happy. That's what caused the events of the movie. But even if she sent the core memories, that wouldn't solve the issue, since Joy would still not be there and, since she wouldn't be there, Riley wouldn't be able to be happy.

      Personally I think it’s interesting how everyone has a different leading emotion. The dad’s leading emotion is anger and her mom’s leading emotion is sadness. It quietly tells us that theirs no purely good emotion and that no emotion is always correct. Dads anger is a more authoritative force and Moms sadness is a much more gentle leader. Joy leads everyone to a colorful and adventurous life but is afraid to let that color fade for even a moment.

    I've always interpreted sadness's unique effect on past memories to be a sort of nostalgia. Reflecting on past happiness can make you sad. If the cause of the change was different, it's possible other emotions would change them... Like, a terrible hockey accident might lead to fear changing the memories of past play, a betrayal might give this to anger or disgust, who similarly might feel compelled to touch the memories

    If you're a parent, watch this show with your kid. It creates a language that you can use to draw them out. "When you did that, what emotion did you think was in control? When that happened, what color was that memory ball?" These are hard to explain for a kid, but this show gives them the ability to describe where they're at and how they feel.

    Your commentary was PRISTINE! You really were understanding the undertones of what they were trying to get across. A few extra tid bits:
    +Mom's commanding emotion (like joy was with Riley) was sadness and Dad's was Anger- a commentary about Men and Woman's -stereotypical- way of dealing with life (not saying its true)
    +We all have imaginary friends that seemed so real to us when we are children that fade away until we know that we did... but we cant remember them anymore
    +The controller grows as Riley grows. The move starts and its tiny, then she hits childhood and theres space for more than one emotion, now shes in preteens where all of the 5 emotions can have a space
    +lastly- just like all Pixar movies there are tooooons of easter eggs to their other movies!
    so glad you liked this! Cant wait for number 2!

      Slight correction to your first point, characters shown in the credits sequences all have different leading emotions (emo girl has fear, clown guy has joy, dog has joy, cat looks like fear but is probably disgust as most of its memories are green)
      It's likely then that Mrs. Andersen's leading emotion is Sadness because she is more empathetic and compassionate; Mr. Andersen's leading emotion is Anger because he is more headstrong and concerned about fairness.

    Tbh this movie still resonates with me till tbks day. At a young age, right after i started having close friends and establishing my joy of school, my parents moved my family back to tbeir hometown, a COMPLETE DIFFERENT COUNTRY. it took me so much to enjoy it and i smiled despite my heart breaking as i recalled my friends. It was when i entered school did i realise i lost everything i had started to love and bursted out cryiny. I was fortunate a few classmates could speak in english (2nd graders and eng is this countries 2nd language) and they made me get through the day and i started to get better.
    Moving is a really hard things but parents need to understand its harder upon the kids as theyre developing memories. This movie helped me so much to understand my internal hatred at them for moving away.

    The reason Joy doesn't try to send the Core Memories is that she fears that they would change into Angry, Fearful or Disgusted memories and since they don't know how to fix them back they seem to be stuck in that state for who knows how long, Joy doesn't want to risk that. Probably certain memories only can at certain times because Fear managed to recall all the hockey memories and they didn't change emotions when he touched them (though they didn't get stuck since the Core Memory Vault only can keep Core Memories and not just any memory, so it didn't work).

  • @Nuvendil
    @Nuvendil 9 месяцев назад +7

    So the memories turn sad when she touches them because that's how Riley honestly feels about them. She's experienced a significantchange in her life. And she's growing up. For a child, losing those aspects of her childhood is a significant loss. There's a sadness attached to the fact those days are over. And she needs to accept that pain and process through it, not run from it. It doesn't mean she loses everything she was before, but rather it's the pathway towards growth. In the end, she winds up with new islands of Family and Hockey for example, but with new core memories shaping those.
    Oh and on the distance thing. So, distances in the USA can be a bit hard to convey wuth just numbers if you don't live in a very large nation like Canada, Russia, China, or Brazil. So to give a sense of scale, the travel distance between Austin, Texas and San Francisco, California (~1760 miles) is just a little bit greater than the distance between Edinburgh, Scotland and Belgrade, Serbia (~1700 miles). It's about 26 hours by car.
    So yeah, pretty far.

    24:12 "what do you do?"
    Hopefully try to respond to your kid, not with your own emotions, but with understanding. Kids don't act out because they want to be bad kids. They want to fulfil their needs. Often overlooked needs by parents are play and attention, because they aren't as urgent as food and water. And parents often attempt to punish acting out for attention with less attention or negative attention, and it usually doesn't stop the acting out, because the need is for positive attention and interaction with a caregiver. Once your kid can talk, you can teach him that it's okay to say something like, "can you pay attention to me please?" (usually "look at me!" as a toddler, but that need doesn't go away after toddlerhood) and when to say it. I wish I had a way to say, "I'm struggling with my patience right now," or some kind of code word arranged a head of time, when I was little and my mom would get caught chatting with someone at the supermarket. It probably would've gotten my mom out of conversations she wasn't interested in, too.
    Whatever the situation, if you stay calm and think before you speak, you're far more likely to feel like you were successful after the interaction. If you get worked up and throw out words or punishments you don't mean, you've lost no matter what the kid did. "I need to think it over and discuss this with your mother. We'll talk later", was my "wait till your father gets home." It allowed my parents to discuss and consider an appropriate punishment that was as close to whatever I did as possible.

    Inever understood the hate that sadness got, even before I watched the whole movie. I guess it's because it would be sort of my leading emotion and the one that best helped me adapt growing up, because, yeah, expressing that you're sad is necessary and it helps you get help, because if others can see you're struggling, then they can help. And sadness was always being interrupted and cut off by joy so that also always bothered me. I hate when people interrupt each other during a conversation. And sadness clearly felt the need to do something, but joy wouldn't let her. It's a miracle sadness hadn't exploded earlier. Edit to add: also sadness is super autistic coded and joy babying her and "being exhausted" because she has to "deal with her" never sit right with me. Like, joy, literally nobody told you you were in charge.

    The reason we have a hard time seeing Bing bong's death scene or him disappearing it triggers us because deep down inside we all once imagine a friend to be in our lives. And to us they were real and we all had a wonderful childhood. At least in my case I know that's why this scene hit me so hard I remember my imaginary friend and it's kind of like those small memories you don't think about, but they do still exist inside us somewhere in our hearts and memories. But the emotions are a lot but Sadness is correct sadness is needed in our lives weather we can relate to or not is up to other people but to me I can see how Sadness can make us show Empathy for others and also bring in help when we need it, because when your sad it's the time most try to listen. if you try to hide all your emotions like Joy tries to do, it's not a good thing, in that case it's kind of toxic in my opinion because you can't live your life like that, and the reasons Sandess is reacting this way, it's because Raily's body is changing, and her moving away caused the emotions to become stronger and more mixed of confusion and sadness.

    "...why the Hawaiians?..."
    Like she mistakenly thought the "Golden Gate Bridge" would be made of gold, she thinks "Hawaiian pizza" was invented by Hawaiians (or that it's common there). It was, in fact, invented by Canadians. It's _called_ 'Hawaiian' because, in addition to the sauce and cheese, it uses pineapple and ham as toppings. Many people hate this, specifically the pineapple. _I_ think they're crazy. Pineapple on pizza is _awesome_ (as long at you use halfway decent pineapple). So is pear. Other fruits don't work as well, though I imagine apple might, _if_ you get an extremely sweet variety or perhaps use dehydrated apple. Mixing salty and sweet together has always been a fairly common hit. You can't even make a _cake_ without salt. But many people have this notion of pizza as a purely salty/savory thing and can't get on board with one that has sweetness to it.
    "...is Texas far from San Francisco..."
    They went from somewhere in Minnesota to San Franciso. We'll presume Minneapolis (the capital). That's a trip of 1569 miles or 2525 kilometers. If the truck went to Houston (capital of Texs), it's now 1616 miles or 2601 kilometers away. Houston is 1058 miles or 1702 kilometers from Minneapolis. In other words the truck was _supposed_ to go from the mid north-East of the country to the far west of the country, but instead went almost directly south instead. Or, to give you an idea of how ridiculous it is since I _think_ you're in the U.K., this would be like if they moved from Norwich to Edinburgh and are now finding out that their furniture and stuff has somehow ended up in Cardiff. Obviously with the distances being much longer since, y'know, the U.K. is _much_ smaller.
    "...Disney, man..."
    Pixar, specifically. Yes, Disney owns Pixar at this point, but the Pixar team has, for a _while_ now, been masters of hitting you right in the heart so you can feel every emotion. ... Which seems appropriate for this movie.
    "...they're like happy memories but you're sad about it..."
    I think you have it exactly, but... I'm not sure. Basically she's recontextualizing the memory. It _was_ a happy memory, but because it's taken away it's now a source of sadness. Like how when you lose something (or someone), memories of it can make you sad.
    Great reaction!
    Have a nice day!

    I feel like Joy isn’t toxic positivity… Yes she was controlling but she just wanted Joy to be happy and Goofball Island shows that as one of her personality traits so she’s mostly Joyful and Joy also lets the other emotions control sometimes it’s just Riley’s life story is happy and rainbows till the plot where she moved to San Francisco and that’s when Joy isn’t always needed

    • @Carpathianpixie
      @Carpathianpixie 4 месяца назад

      Joy lets the others control because she understands what their purpose is. She doesn't understand why Sadness exists. In the beginning of the movie, she introduces every emotion and what they do except for Sadness.
      -Fear keeps them alive.a
      -Disgust keeps them from getting poisoned.
      -Anger makes sure things are fair.
      When it came to Sadness, she says "well, I don't really know what she does." It wasn't until she was down in the pit with Bing Bong that she realized that: "Mom and Dad came to help because of Sadness."

    If they pass up the Core Memories and one of the emotions touches them, wouldn’t they turn into Fear, Disgust, or Anger, though?

    bro as much as i agree w the movie's message it still drives me crazy when sadness keeps touching the memories and turning them sad for no reason at all. like, i get it, riley can't be happy all the time, but sadness was just destroying riley's experiences out of spite even tho she knew what would happen at that makes me so mad 😭 like yeah you also need sadness but why would riley need to be sad at her first day in front of the whole class ??? it pisses me off and for me is 90% her fault they ended up in that situation.

    • @daydreams5506
      @daydreams5506 7 месяцев назад +7

      she was touching them cause Riley needed it to pass thought the sadness that came with moving out from your hometown. Unconsciously she touched them and make them sad cause that’s the normal response a kid would have on their first day on another city or school. No kid who left their hometown, friends and their things haven’t come to their new house would be happy on their first day of school.
      That’s the whole point of the movie. To Riley to adapt on her new house and school she needed to miss and let out the sadness that old memories bring her! Joy was interrupting that. Joy wasn’t letting the emotions go trough this phase as they should be on an experience as moving out is! Unconsciously sadness was just trying to take over the old memories to let Riley get trough the change :)
