- 🚨EXCLUSIVE My Story: David Martindale - Livingston Manager
🎥 PLZ Soccer football documentary: ACCESS ALL AREAS with the Livingston FC manager, David Martindale, as we experience a week in the life of a cinch Scottish Premiership manager.
David Martindale's tenure as Livingston Football Club's manager has been nothing short of remarkable. In a sport where success is often determined by financial might and high-profile signings, Martindale has carved out a niche for himself through his innovative tactics, relentless work ethic, and unyielding spirit that has seen the club punch well above its weight. This documentary delves into the journey of the mastermind behind Livingston's rise, exploring his tactics, accomplishments, and the challenges he has faced.
Early Life and Career
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, David Martindale's journey in football started at an early age. His passion and love for the game were evident, and his dedication to understanding the nuances of football management led him to pursue coaching badges. Martindale began his career in football by working at various youth academies and lower-league clubs, gaining valuable experience before joining Livingston FC as an assistant coach in 2014.
The Turning Point: Livingston's Promotion
In December 2020, Martindale was promoted from assistant coach to interim head coach following the departure of Gary Holt. The impact was immediate, as the club went on a remarkable run of form, winning eight of their next nine games. This impressive streak led to Martindale being appointed the full-time manager in January 2021.
Martindale's Tactics: Adapting to Win
One of the key reasons behind Martindale's success at Livingston is his tactical adaptability. He has instilled a sense of discipline and organization in the team, making them a formidable defensive unit. However, he is not one to shy away from changing his tactics when the situation demands it.
Martindale's teams are known for their high pressing and aggressive style, forcing opponents to make errors in their own half. He has also made smart use of set-pieces, with his players frequently scoring from corners and free kicks. This combination of a solid defensive foundation and effective attacking strategies has seen Livingston consistently outperform expectations.
Overcoming Challenges and Defying the Odds
David Martindale's story is one of redemption and resilience. In the past, he faced legal issues and spent time in prison, but he has not let these experiences define him. Instead, he has used them as motivation to succeed in football management and prove that people can change.
His ability to overcome adversity has been evident in his management style. Martindale has consistently shown faith in his players, helping them grow both on and off the pitch. He has also built a strong bond with the club's supporters, who have embraced him as one of their own.
Accomplishments
Under Martindale's guidance, Livingston has enjoyed a period of unprecedented success. The club has established itself as a formidable force in the Scottish Premiership, regularly competing for spots in the top half of the table. Martindale has also guided the team to multiple cup runs, including a memorable journey to the 2021 Scottish League Cup Final.
David Martindale's success as Livingston's manager is a testament to his unyielding spirit and tactical acumen. He has overcome personal and professional challenges to build a team that consistently defies expectations. As Livingston continues to grow and develop under his guidance, there is no doubt that Martindale will continue to rise in the world of football management.

Pre season for some teams in terms of the training schedule, the diet, difference with normal training, ball work, other workouts.
This man is a perfect example of a rehabilitated human being. He made mistakes and has clearly learnt from them and is a credit to himself as a result. Excellent insight and content
@Michael Telfer well said ' Grt coach and a positive character..
100% ,everyone deserves a second chance
Absoulte legend keep it up davie
A proper manager who is wholly invested in Livingston fc, very brave in opening up his family life. Wish him and his team every success and hope they get top six and earn some better money. Good luck from a cfc supporter.
I had the immense privilege of having a coffee and a "one to one" chat with Davie. A "meeting" set up by my son Mark. I have supported Livi since 1996 and a season ticket holder on and off since then. I truly admired David's passion for Livi and his openess about his past. I firmly believe that everyone deserves a second chance. Good on him for grabbing that. He's doing a great job with limited resources. God bless you and your family Dave
As a fan off one of the Glasgow Giants .I think wholeheartedly that David is one of the gentlemen of the premiership. Doesn't bullshit just straight down the line .Breath of fresh air .
HUN HUN HUN !!!!
@@CME1994 And you’re a bitter Sectarian bigot.
Loved the interview. Livingston FC are fortunate to have this terrific man.
People deserve a second chance in life. His life is similar to mine 19 years ago. I was released from Dartmoor after serving 3 years first offence if people didn't give me a chance i don't know where I would be in life. A very likeable man who has his drive back. Great video Adam 👍
Well done davie takes alot to fight for yourself in this country and you stuck it out pal
The lad has done well , more power to him for constantly struggling to better himself 👍
What a guy. Asset to the Scottish game, lucky to have him. Universally appreciated across all clubs.
Impossible to hate Martindale and Livingston fc. He’s done a great job since taking over and it’s great to see such a small Scottish club with small finances doing so well. As someone who has made mistakes very similar to his in my past and who is still judged for it after 11 years, it’s nice to see him making something of himself. All the best to Livingston and him for the rest of the season, hoping they get the chance of European football to help with the finances 🧡🖤
Great fly on the wall piece. DM should be the poster child for rehabilitated prisoners. He had achieved a lot and is humble yet thankful. He’s hungry to succeed and players seeking a 2nd chance will only blossom. I’m pleased for the fella, we all screw up things in life but it’s not how you fall but how you get up.
Celtic fan here. Well done David total respect to you and Martha and the kids. Youre doing an amasing job at Livi mate
Quality Manager, wish him all the best
Genuine and authentic with a glug of humility and honesty … 👍 David 👍 from Ayr fan
Great documentary. He's doing a great job at Livingston
Amazing. Need more team managers to do this likes. Am from Edinburgh but stay in bathgate. I have friends in jail but to see someone come out and change their life's is outstanding likes. One manager I really like. If he had more money I believe Livingston could be 4th 3rd. My two bhoys support Livingston. Amazing club. Everyone deserves a second chance
Probably the best football documentary i've watched. Absolutely superb.
impressed .....immensely, he comes across as an honest grafter who is considerably more astute than people give him credit for, and very possibly an original diamond in the rough. Well done David Martindale.
I'm a Celtic fan. But I'd honestly like to go to a couple of livi games just to show my support to the club. They are all doing something very admirable and showing immense loyalty. I wish them all the best, which is not something I'd say for a lot of the teams in our league.
I stay local to Livi mate and definitely going to start taking the kid along to games from now on
Why do celtic fans always start sentences with "I'm a celtic fan but..."?
You live in Livingston and choose to support Celtic, dont you?
Dons fan here, absolutely fascinating. Love an insight to 'below deck' and that was magic. Hope he gets a gig somewhere else.
To all at PLZ, a really fantastic podcast you should be proud of this one and I hope that you make many more along the same lines
Brilliant Doco, top man Davie Martindale. Would love to see him at Tynie, give these lazy barstewards the shake up they need..
Superb insight and Davie deserves all the success. Livingston deserves more support too.
Hopefully more docs like this around the other clubs in the league outstanding content what a guy martindale is
Good intelligent thinker of the game, very impressed with the guy, he enjoys what he does at livingston and is not looking any further than that, I am sure he will have success whatever he does in the future
The mad thing is livi could have a decent fan base . West lothians quite a big area. It's just a shame about 60% of people frm west Lothian support rangers , 15% celtic fans about another 15% hearts fans and the small 10% are livi fans . Just need to keep doing wht we are doing and try and focus on the next generation of youths and try and get them supporting livi.
Superb piece of insight from a very good football manager. Well done PLZ and full of admiration for how David has rebuilt his career
That was great viewing .... Well Done.
Well done, PLZ. Great insight. I hope to see more with other clubs 👍
Enjoyed this content brilliant insight into david martindale from a motherwell fan!
Livingston are arguably the best run club in Scotland. 1000 fans and got promoted twice and stabilised in the top league despite losing their best players. All down to this guy pretty much.
He’s Dunn a Brilliant job running that club in got they boys giving everything’
Great segment guys, more like this please.
Went to uni with Davey. A tremendous baller and a great guy.

Would love to see how David Martindale would do at a Hibernian /Aberdeen /Dundee United with a better budget.
Hope he gets the opportunity, he deserves it.
Dedicated and great character and loves football!
Great documentary with Davy and PLZ great story from Davys past to present shows how you can turn your life around with as Davy said hard work, bang on must be very hard to be a manager in this industry today, go on Davy all the best for the future positive thinking everytime that's how you do it not feeling sorry for himself well sometimes ask his dog, 👏👏👍

Gary Holt joined our boys club team Loudoun Valley u14-u16 before leaving for the Army, but found it hard to get a regular starting slot due to myself and two others being difficult to dislodge but he was a great bloke and a right grafter.Just think Gary it was me who kept you out and I did you a favour as you were spotted playing for the army team by Pat Crerand.Gary Holt Scottish Cup winner,English Premiership player and Scottish Internationaist not bad for a wee guy fae gostin
Best wishes Gary fae wee budgie🤓
i just wish livi had more fans just like back in the day Meadowbank
Excellent documentary
That’s good loved that do one with an top four club like mine club hearts 👏🏻
This man will end up manager of hearts or hibs
Big Davie living in one of the poshest parts of Edinburgh and driving the blacked out Rangey 😂 fair play to the lad
Aye who says crime doesn't pay eh!!!
Great guy
Keep your hands on the wheel at all times there Davy. You’re on film. 😂👍
Top man 🇱🇻
I'm a Celtic fan, but I like and respect Martindale he doesn't have that inherent bitterness that many sevco fans and players have. We all make mistakes, but the guy shouldn't be defined by his mistakes. He also works with players from Rangers and Celtic backgrounds despite the fact he is a Rangers fan. Martindale could well manage Scotland one day, I really believe that as he has that wee eccentric streak that I think helps at International football, he has that quirkiness that someone like Klop has. Decent bloke
Never heard of Sevco - enlighten me ya melt 😅
I’m a Celtic fan, blah blah blah, who gives a f about ye. 🤔

what a guy I remember when the media tried to destroy him because he'd been in jail when he was younger but he faced it head on he's been honest about his past there's worse than him in the game without naming any names I'm sure if we had to dip into a few players and managers past we'd be shocked at what we'd find ... what martindale has done at Livingston is outstanding let's not forget livi has the lowest budget in the league what he's had to work with is remarkable .. I would love to see him somehow win the league cup or scottish cup if st Johnstone can do the double then anything is possible...the guy is top class ...
Love listening to Davie, very admirable the way he has turned his life around.
I just wish he would stop referring to himself in third person 😂
Quite upset seeing Livingston at the bottom of the league genuinely love his character. Wishing him all the best.
Hi guys, Murray from ibrox here, daughters RUclips handle just incase ur wondering lol, I really enjoyed the insight into davie martindale, however it could have been more in depth, I'd liked to have seen some of his coaching methods, a 30 minuet video from a week filming, correct me if I'm wrong. Yeah, well done really enjoyed it, although I expected a more detailed video, is there more to follow maybe
Seems a good guy and as honest as the day is long
good wee video, Davies one of the good guys but get that pitch tae fuk😂
Good luck to this guy I think he will go far, everbody deserves a second chance and Davie is taking it by the reins, promising things coming ahead. Might need to slow down on the lingo right enough other clubs might not understand our accent lol good luck m8. (Rangers fan)
Next Rangers Manager
He is likeable
Martindale is a future Scotland manager for me, but he probably needs to win something at a bigger Scottish club or in England first.
Awesome great work. David what hall where you in 🤣 last time a was In was 07 style 🤣
Loves a mirror check. Top driver
Used to being followed
What a boy
gonny please keep yer hons oan the steering wheel when yer car is moving David, My hearts in my mouth everytime ye take them aff it lol
From boxes of powder to penalty boxes in the spfl 👏
Future hibs manager 🇳🇬
I can't see him doing anything that bad to deserve that.
He’s already been in bother and paid the price, doesn’t need it again going to Hibs. 😂😂
Was Kenny that manager who put himself in at 50 instead of the younger guy
The only thing that let him down was his past or he would have got the rangers job we all know he rangers daft but i suppose everyone has a past good manager tho
And that shows the intolerance and snobbery of people. The man used his past to put himself through university for a degree and get his coaching badges.

On the grass
Does anyone think that it’s a good idea for him to be showing his strategies and his knowledge of what he does before he faces his opposition at the weekend?
Apart from that, he’s an amazing manager and what he has done to make the turn around for Livi is outstanding, have to praise him from being a livi boy
The man is a great manager and a credit to Livi. The club doesn't even own its stadium and the land around it. So the fact he the manager and helping on building jobs around ground is brilliant.
If I had the money, i would love to pump a bit into this club. So long as he stayed a while lol
Why has Aberdeen no snapped him up
Don't think there's a club in Scotland that wouldn't take Davie as a manager
Great dedication and well done to him. But talk about killing the beautiful game with tactics & analysis. To play good sport your mind must be free. 99% of goals come from men not getting picked up ,(mainly wingers who get 10 yards). Down to their zone football, but these modern coaches never talk about that or remedy it. Watch Big match revisited and compare it to the robot stuff of today.
Neilson next
He’s just a bloody Ned
🤦 for a man who hit rock bottom to where he is now! He is doing no bad for a ned so away don't talk 💩.
@@David-qk7lc piss off mate take your face for a 💩
Good story. Horrible pitch...
Davies a top guy and manager...doesn't get the credit ...if he never had a convction he would be in the EPL.
You'll be lucky to avoid relegation ya ned

Well done David picked yourself up and have done better in life than a couple of hate fueled tools in the comments. Never Judge A Moment In Someone's Life Without Knowing Their Full Story. The problem with society these days too many sad people who just love to hate pathetic way to live your life.
Every man deserves a second chance as they say good luck David 🍻
Davy is that NEW WORD OF FOOTBALL GENUISES ?? GENERIC!!! OF LKV THAT WORD
NORMALLY WITH MANAGERS THESE DAYS ITS WIT FOR IT ????.
( TRANSITION ) LOL ...
Great insight into what it's like for managers ,cant imagine Mourinho or Guardiola getting the tools out etc ,people might slate scottish football but it's only missing the finances ,what you've got that the EPL etc lost a long time ago is the real heart and soul of football, great stuff Plz
Spot on Davie...changing managers every 5 mins,,,aint an indicment on the manager, rather the fault of the fat cats who decided 6 weeks beforehand he was the man for the job. Davie will know if a new club is a fit....but guys who seem trustworthy never got there by playing straight. Meaning certain chairman etc....
I kinda wanted him to be driving about in a wee shity rust bucket Corsa or a wee van covered in paint inside. The range rover doesn't fit.
Lots of drug dealers drive range rovers
