Hi! It’s the Minnie’s Boys lady again. One of the great nights of my life was being sent OUT of Sardi’s, a few minutes after midnight after my stepmom’s production of Hugh Leonard’s “Summer “ opened in 1980. I (after a couple of hasty and nearly legal drinks) scrambled up to the Times building (even New Yorkers tend to forget there’s a reason it’s called Times Square). There, a cohort of men were bundling the papers for distribution. “Can I buy a few copies?” I gasped. “How much?” Two men paused and stared at me. “They sent me here from Sardi’s,” I babbled… I have no idea why. “Oh,” said one guy. “That’s different,” and peeled me off a handful of papers. I squatted in my short skirt and heels in what I remember as a drizzle, and read the Frank Rich review… good!!! (I have no idea what tenement in the Bronx I would have wound up in if I hadn’t dared to go back to the restaurant.) I later interviewed Sardi Jr. for a food column in Polo Magazine… thanks for reminding me of stuff I haven’t thought of in decades. (YES, I’ve subscribed!) Have you ever heard of a weird little flop called “Come Summer?” Ask me some time.
Love this! Before the pandemic I used to eat at Sardi's with a group of friends every Tuesday. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it reopens soon. I miss it.
Sometime in late 1972 when my brother was still a baby and I must have been no more than 3.5 years old we spent the day in an office waiting room in NYC with my father negotiating with executives of a company. After the long day the all decided to go to Sardis. I remember sitting in a chair and I think the waiter handed me a menu. I didn't know how to read, and asked the waiter "Can I just have a hamburger?" My brother was the type of baby that never cried. The executives couldn't believe how well behaved we were. They made a hamburger for me.
I had a friend who was moving away and we had our going away party at Sardis it ALSO co-incided with the closing night of Anastasia, to which, I could see the Broadhurst from the window the audience errupt in cheers for the cast. As an added bonus Michael C. Hall stopped by for a drink albeit not with us.

Wow! You have such amazing stories!!! Thanks for sharing them and keep em coming! I have heard of Come Summer. I think I have the demo for it.
I saw " Come Summer " starring Ray Bolger and Margaret Hamilton
Thanks for the piece on Sardi’s. I used to work there in the late 1970s with Vincent Sardi Jr. My first job out of college. Great experience.
